An Uphill Battle

We are avidly working with EENU-Uganda (our feet on the ground in-country) to make sure that our school meets all of the updated Standard Operating Procedures set forth by the Ugandan government so that we can safely open our doors to the students and be at full capacity at the beginning of 2021.  We are praying that all levels of schooling will be allowed to open at that time and are preparing now in order to accommodate the new guidelines for the children, teachers, and staffs' safety. We want to assure you that when all the children are finally able to return to their school, it will be a safe environment.

You may have heard this from us before, but just to make sure you know...we are so incredibly grateful for everyone's continuing support, especially during this year. It has been a tough year for many here in the U.S. Many of our challenges, such as no toilet paper or the store not having our favorite cereal, cannot be compared to how life has changed in Uganda. The whole country shut down in March. A curfew was set in place from 7 p.m.- 6 a.m., permission had to be granted if you needed to leave your home to go to the hospital (if there was one nearby AND you could afford the transportation), there were a limit of passengers in personal cars, and no items could be sold on the side of the road, the majority of how families make an income.

Only recently has Uganda begun to re-open traveling restrictions, transportation, businesses, and schools. The cost of living has significantly increased, which for some, means going days without meals. With the cost of living inflating due to the pandemic, we are facing increased tuition prices (as well as school materials, transportation, etc.) for ALL grade levels, set forth by the Ugandan government, which will impact our financial responsibilities to these children directly. It is believed that the situation will only get worse as the political environment in Uganda approaches elections, and as businesses continue to collapse.

If each household that receives this newsletter donated an additional $20 per month, it would provide the additional coverage we need to ensure our responsibilities to these children can be fulfilled as we have planned and prayed for.

We are at a crossroads, and NOW is the time to become part of the "Friends of E3 Africa"  for as little as $20 per month.

Whether you are a current sponsor, monthly reader, occasional or frequent donor, or even a past sponsor, YOU have the chance to be a part of something phenomenal here! You can make a difference by becoming part of the Friends for E3 Africa as we will be able to continue to care for those in our programs and open our doors to more students in 2021! We realize this might strain you & your family to increase your budget, even by $20 a month. But what that $20 (or more) per month is going to provide for these children cannot be measured. The love and care that they are going to feel because someone half-way across the world sacrificed for them...it is immeasurable.

*Warning: Your heart may melt, and your eyes may water...read with caution. Just kidding! But seriously, read some of these excerpts from student letters to their sponsors.

Thank you for the support you have rendered me, not only as a sponsor but also as a parent.

Thank you for your undying kindness and continual support to further my education. I was lost but have now found purpose in my life because of you.

I promise to be a responsible person and not let you down. I am appreciative of your support, though you don't know me at all.

I pray every night for God to bless the works of your hands and allow me the benefit to receive. I am grateful for my education. By your example, I plan to bless others as you have shown me.

Be strong and courageous for the Lord your God goes with you (Deuteronomy 31:6) has been a mantra for many during the lockdown. Please keep our students in your prayers as they face this challenge of catching up in school studies as well as staying healthy while at their homestead. We will continue to pray for a swift resolution so that all our sponsored students may get back to school. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Looking Forward to Going Back

As our previous newsletter had mentioned to you, the 206 students attending our school, St. Thomas Aquinas College in Erepi, have been keeping their minds sharp with educational packets that our phenomenal teachers created and with the help of coordinators and administration, were disbursed to the students throughout the months they have been out of school (since March). We are very thankful for all the hard work and dedication these teachers and students have shown during Uganda's shutdown. We are also grateful for EENU-Uganda staff, volunteers, and board members who have been making calls and home visits to our other students to keep in touch and check that they are doing well.

Other good news is that some of our other sponsored students in their candidate classes ( S4 =10th grade and S6=12th grade) or college-level classes were able to return to their schools on October 15th. The Ugandan educational authorities have made revisions to the academic year, and these students are now reporting for their second term (of three terms.) The schools will have to make adjustments to their customarily scheduled break in order to finish the third term before March 2021 exams. Please continue to keep your student in prayers.
