1. Lutherans encouraged to pray, reflect on Reformation Day - October 31

Photo Credit: The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) website

As we fast approach the anniversary of Reformation Day on October 31, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has made available a number of resources for use throughout the global communion of churches. The LWF has prepared worship materials and other online resources to help churches pray and reflect together on the meaning of Reformation in our contemporary context. To access these resources, please go to our ELCIC website at: https://www.elcic.ca/news.cfm?article=581.

During the week of October 24 to October 31, the LWF will be posting videos with reflections from all seven regions of the LWF on what it means to be Lutheran in their context. You are invited to use and share these resources found on the LWF Facebook page.

2. Stronger Together 2020 - youth ministry during a pandemic

Stronger Together generally brings together youth and young adult leaders from Dioceses and Synods from across the country to build community, worship and learn about issues facing Youth Ministry. This year, we have moved our gathering online and will take place from November 24-25. While we know meeting online can't replace an in-person gathering, we hope that more leaders will be able to participate this year because there will be no cost restraints. To find out more, please click here.

Stronger Together is an expression of the Full Communion relationship between the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and the Anglican Church of Canada. All Youth Leaders and Campus Ministers are welcome.

There is no cost for this event, but you will have to register by November 20, 2020 to participate. All sessions will be held online. Details on how to participate will be sent by email after we receive your registration.

If you can't make the sessions when they go live, they will be recorded and posted at a later time. Email Gretchen Peterson or Sheilagh McGlynn letting them know you'd like to watch the recorded sessions at a later time. If you have any questions, please contact Gretchen gpeterson@elcic.ca or Sheilagh smcglynn@national.anglican.ca .

3. Updated information from National and Synod Treasurers on the Temporary Wage Subsidy and Canada Wage Subsidy

ELCIC National and Synod Treasurers have prepared an update on some of the commonly asked questions pertaining to the Temporary Wage Subsidy and Canada Wage Subsidy such as shared employee agreements and employee arrangements between congregations. Be sure to let your congregational treasurer know that these resources are available.

4. Help Canada Lutheran create a feature article for the March 2021 issue

Canada Lutheran is looking ahead for its March 2021 issue and would like to ask to ask for your help on its plan in creating a feature article.

How would you explain the meaning of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus to a 12-year-old? Your answer and those from others will be helpful as Canada Lutheran plans to use as many answers it can get.

Also children and youth ages 16 and under are invited to email their drawings of the crucifixion and/or the resurrection to help illustrate the article. Media of choice can be anything - this is their chance to be creative! When sending in their drawings or illustrations, you may send the artworks to our mailing address at: Canada Lutheran, 600-177 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5. If sending in by email, please send in a clear scanned image of the artwork in PDF or send it in jpeg format (at least 300 dpi).

Responses and artworks are needed by January 5, 2021. To reach us at Canada Lutheran, please send an email to editor@elcic.ca .

5. 2020-21 Congregational Stewardship Resources

This year's stewardship materials focus on the theme Faithful, Loving, Hopeful, based on 1 Corinthians 13:13. This verse is often more commonly associated with weddings but generosity is indeed a matter of the heart and attitude. A good steward has a faithful, hopeful and loving heart.

The ELCIC National Office provides stewardship resources to congregations at no cost! Find out more about what's available and order your resources today by checking out the following link: https://elcic.ca/Stewardship/default.cfm

6. Living our Faith - Read: Bible Book Club

You are invited to a year of reading the Bible!
ELCIC National Bishop Susan Johnson invites you to form a Bible Book Club with members of your church, your friends, family or others from your community, as a way to study scripture and discuss the Bible together.

Each month we focus together on a different book of the Bible. Our first month, September, had us reading the book of Genesis. For the month of October we have moved to reading the book of Deuteronomy. And for the month of November, we will focus reading on the book of Kings (reading questions for November are now available).

Did you participate in a Bible Book Club this month? We want to hear from you!

Participating in the Living our Faith - Bible Book Club is easy. Form your book club, use the introduction we provide from the Lutheran Study Bible, read the appointed book, download the prepared questions and join in the discussion!

We look forward to hearing about your year of reading the Bible!

7. Supporting students at schools of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land

As schools around the world are beginning a new academic year in very challenging circumstances, so too are the students at schools of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). Earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic, the schools dealt with closures and lock down periods by embracing digital technology and distance learning. Sadly, the continued lock downs have impacted families served by the schools in many different ways. COVID-19 restrictions have meant further barricade closures and a significant loss of tourism for the region resulting in job loss and substantial reduction in income to household. Many families are now facing signifiant difficulties with paying tuition for the 2020-21 school year, which is on average $1,600/year per student.

To help support our Global Mission partner, the ELCIC has launched an ELCJHL Scholarship Appeal for the 2020-21 school year. You are invited to consider how you can financially support scholarships for students of the ELCJHL. Donate today and also consider how you can get your congregation and community involved.

11. Child of God you are growing up - copies available

We have received a limited number of new, never used copies of the book Child of God you are growing up written by the Rev. Don Johnson and illustrated by Friedrich Peter here in the National Office. We would like to make these available to individuals and/or congregations who might be interested. The suggested retail value of the book is $10.95 plus tax. We are willing to mail these out at no charge and ask you to consider a donation to the ELCIC Praise Appeal. Please send your requests to tgallop@elcic.ca. Limited copies only.

Child of God you are growing up is intended to be given to children and their parents at baptism, or on the occasion of the anniversary of their baptism. It is also written so that congregations might invite children, parents and godparents to a special day in the church to renew their baptism and give a copy of this book. The book is to be read by children and their parents together. It is hoped that both will grow together in their understanding of the gifts that are theirs.
