closed Thursday and Friday,

Maxwell is now open normal operating hours for browsing and computer use,
by appointment only.
We are still offering curbside services.
Here's what you need to know:

In the State of New York, facial coverings (over your mouth and nose) are mandated. Masks must be worn at all times, even for curbside pickup. If you need ADA accommodations, please call 315-672-3661 or email director@maxwellmemoriallibrary.org before you come to the library.

To make an appointment, call the library at 315-672-3661 during regular hours. Appointment requests left on our answering machine, email, or Facebook page will not be honored. You must speak with a staff member.

Please be patient if the line is busy. We only have one line, so please call back or leave us a message and we will return your call.

Appointments can be made every hour on the hour, for a maximum of 45 minutes. This minimizes the number of people in the building at any one time, which is a New York State requirement. It also gives the staff time to clean between appointments, for everyone’s protection.

If you are not feeling well, please call to reschedule your appointment.

All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you are late for your scheduled appointment, please be aware that each appointment ends at 45 minutes past the hour. You will not receive your full time in that case.
We've opened one of our study rooms for individual or very small group use, by appointment only. The Green Study has a glass paneled door for semi-privacy, a window that can be opened for ventilation, and an Air Purifier with an H13 HEPA filter for added safety. There is no computer in the room, but there is access to the library's free wi-fi. Social distancing and masks are required at all times inside the building, even in the study. The room may be reserved for up to two hours, and is cleaned between appointments. Students and tutors are welcome to call us at 315-672-3661 to inquire and to make an appointment.
Did you know that our book sale shelf is open for browsing? You can make an appointment to come in and see what's for sale. We can also take some donations, but please call first to arrange a time and see how many we can handle. We know that many of our patrons have missed this, so we are happy to have it up and running again.
And library fines can be, too!
Food for Fines Month
at Maxwell Library is extended through November.

We will waive $1 of your overdue fines for each food pantry item you donate at our library. We will bring the donations to St. Joseph's Church in Camillus for their food pantry.
The food pantry is looking for non-expired non-perishable food items and/or personal hygiene products. No clothing, please.

No fines? Pay it forward, and bring your donations anyway!

Remember that children's and young adult materials are fine-free at Maxwell.
Veterans and Active Military are excused from overdue fines,
so speak with us about updating your patron status
if you fall into this category.

Raising Backyard Chickens
virtual via Zoom--register here
Friday, November 6
3-4 PM

Marion "Kathy" Kitt grew up on her grandparents' farm in the Town of Onondaga. The property was on Vinegar Road, today known as Kasson Road, and is currently home to Kathy, her husband, and her "girls"--the flock of chickens she lovingly raises, photographs, and paints.

A talented artist, Kathy's 2018 art exhibit and presentation at Maxwell on "backyard chickening" was so well received that an encore performance was requested. Today's interactive workshop, Raising Backyard Chickens, will be held via Zoom. A big advantage to using the Zoom platform is that Kathy will be able to bring the audience on a virtual visit of her set-up, making it easier to show and discuss the basics of starting your own flock.

Free.
Registration is required. You will need a smartphone, tablet, or computer to participate. Click here to register directly through Zoom
and to receive your invitation link.
Learn How to Grow Microgreens
A Zoom workshop with Todd Marsh
Saturday, November 7, 1-2 PM
Register here for November 7, 1 PM

What are microgreens, why are they so popular, and should you start using them? This interactive virtual workshop will give you answers to these questions and show you how to grow microgreens right in your own home. Learn which microgreens you should grow, where to grow them, how to care for them, how to harvest fresh microgreens everyday, and how to use them in food preparation.

The kit used in the demonstration will be available by request after the workshop at a discounted cost of $10.00. The kit includes all the equipment and supplies necessary to plant and grow your own tray of microgreens at home. Kits are limited to the first 20 participants who request them; one per family, please. Purchase is not mandatory to watch the presentation.
To request a kit, email Maxwell Library at maxmemlib@yahoo.com or call the library at 315-672-3661 by noon on Monday, November 9. Please provide your phone number, as you will be called to arrange payment and pickup.

Free. Registration is required. Register directly through Zoom to receive your meeting link. You will need a computer, tablet, or smartphone to attend this Zoom event.

Maxwell Reads
A Zoom gathering to talk about books!

Monday, November 30, 7-8 PM
Register here through Zoom

Please join us for Maxwell's newest book club for adults of all ages, hosted by your library staff! Together, we will choose a book, an author, or a theme and get together on Zoom to share our thoughts, impressions, and suggestions for future selections. See below for registration and reading guide information for the November title. We'll take a break in December, but watch for the January title in the next newsletter.
For November (please note different day of the week), the group will read Adriana Trigiani's Very Valentine. The first book in a trilogy, this introduces the reader to the Roncalli and Angelini families as they work to save their traditional Italian-American family business from financial ruin.

Read about this month's selection at https://www.litlovers.com/reading-guides/fiction/1102-very-valentine-trigiani
Borrow the book through OCPL or OverDrive in print, large print, audio, ebook, or eaudio, and read it by our meeting. We will reserve a few print copies at Maxwell. Call to see if one is available for you to check out on your library account.
Free. Registration is required. Click here to register directly through Zoom so you can receive your meeting invitation.

We'll post the top entries on our Facebook page starting Monday, December 14. Community voting for the favorite runs through Thursday, December 17. The winner will be announced on Friday, December 18. The prize will be a Wegmans gift card and a special cookie cutter. Start baking, and show us what you've got!
Greeting Card Craft for Adults--online via YouTube
Master crafter Alyson Esposito’s greeting card classes are back with a safe and socially distant twist. Register to pick up a kit to assemble two beautiful greeting cards, choice of sentiments included, in your own home. You will need your own adhesive, scissors, and colored pencils or thin markers. The kit will contain all the parts to the cards, a picture of the finished cards, written directions, and a link to a YouTube video where you can watch instructor Alyson Esposito assemble her cards.

Free, but registration is required as the craft is limited to 25 people.
You will need access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone in order to watch the video.

Due to social distancing requirements, please provide your phone number when registering so someone from Maxwell Library can call you to arrange a pickup time for you to fetch your kit. Once you have your kit, you can complete the craft at your own convenience in the comfort of your own home.

November:
Get ready for winter, with snowman and pine trees designs. Choice of sentiments lets you use these for holiday or all-occasion cards.
Registration begins November 1 and runs through November 30, while supplies last. We will call you on or after November 6 to arrange your pick up time.
Register through the November 30 class description or the "Registration open" banner on our November calendar, or call the library starting November 1.

Register through the December 31 class description or the "Registration open" banner on our December calendar, or call the library starting December 1.

Supplies are limited. There is one kit per person, and the craft is designed for our adult patrons. Thank you. If you would like additional kits, please contact Alyson--she is often able to sell them to her students at a reasonable price.
Max Packs--Grab and Go Kits for Adults

Each month will feature a pack full of simple crafts, surprises, and treats on a different theme.
The kits are free and available for grab and go or curbside pickup, one per person or family, while supplies last.
Supplies are limited, and are ready during the week listed below. In the interest of fairness, requests for curbside pickup will not be taken before the first day of the week the packs are available.

November's pack focuses on thankfulness. Available the week of November 16, while supplies last.

We'll take a break in December. The next pack will be available the week of January 19.
Tech Help fromTech Librarian Pete
Here's the link for our new website. You will be redirected to it if you first go to the original one, but bookmarking this is better.

All of us are more dependent than ever on our computers and other digital devices. And we know that things don't always work the way they should. If you have questions, problems, or just need a refresher on something techy, Pete is still around to help. He has made a simple form, available on our website, for you to send him an SOS. Fill it out, and Pete will get back to you as soon as he can. (NOTE: The form might be temporarily unavailable while Pete continues tweaking the website, but you can always call or email and the message will be forwarded to him.)
NEW: Read Pete's biweekly blogs, Pixels with Pete, on various tech topics. Here's what he has planned for November:

What Should I Read Next?: Using the NoveList Database

NoveList is a database available to all OCPL patrons. It is kind of like an enhanced library catalog, allowing users to find books not only by traditional aspects like subject or genre but also by the book's general style, tone, and character. It can also direct you to books or authors you might enjoy, based on those you already like.

Thursday, November 19
Fanfic: When Readers Extend a Universe

Fan fiction is those stories that fans of a work or author write that is set in the universe(s) established by the work or author or that makes use of characters or settings from the original. The term is less than a century old, but fanfic is an ancient type of writing (Virgil's Aeneid is arguably fanfic of Homer's Iliad) and has also been called pastiche.
Wondering what to read next? Here are two simple tools to help you decide:

--The Friends of Maxwell provide BookPage in print format for our patrons. You can also read BookPage through this link on our website and get great suggestions for your next book.

--As Maxwell adds new material, we update several lists on our website through the On the Shelf  tab. Here are the individual links:

Maxwell's Desk List (20 or more titles that are most requested by our patrons, or that we think you would like. If you're waiting for a book, check to see if we have it as a Rapid Read and you might get it sooner.)

New Books at Maxwell (adult, both fiction and nonfiction)

New Large Print at Maxwell (adult, both fiction and nonfiction)

New Audiobooks at Maxwell (CDs; some MP3s)

New Movies at Maxwell (DVD and Blu-Ray; if you're waiting for a movie, check to see if we have it in a different format or as a Fast Flick and you might get it sooner. Some movies come in Combo Packs, and contain both the Blu-Ray and the DVD.)
Kids, Teens, and Family Programming
Say "hi" to library gerbils Beezus and Ramona the next time you are here for a browsing visit! They'll either be in their colorful cage or exploring the library in their exercise balls.
Miss Sally and Ms. Melissa are very sorry they can't see all the storytime children for a while. But you can find them on Facebook for virtual story time on Mondays and Wednesdays! Ms. Melissa reads a new book every Monday for kids 3 and up, and Miss Sally shares her songs, nursery rhymes, and Stories with Sally every Wednesday. Both story times are available by 10:30 a.m. on those days, just like our in-person meetings. You can even see Miss Sally in her Maxwell story time chair, with all your favorite puppet friends!
Tuesday Crafternoons!
Our weekly Grab-and-Go craft kits will be available starting Tuesdays, while supplies last, in our children's area. You may still call us or go online to request one if you prefer curbside pickup. All kits include all of the supplies you will need to do the craft except glue, scissors, and coloring supplies. Crafts are for kids ages 3 and up. For curbside pickup, we'll call you when your kit is ready. Post a photo of your finished crafts on our Facebook page if you like--we'd love to see them!
See what crafts Ms. Melissa has planned by going to our calendar and looking for Grab and Go Kids Craft every Tuesday.

Tutoring help is available through Zoom for middle and high school students, homeschool or other, from a retired teacher. Free. This is a great way to obtain some extra help, especially with the continued need for remote learning, in reading, language arts, basic science, study skills, DBQs, and/or test prep.
Email Pam at maxwelllibrarytutor@gmail.com for information and to set up your Zoom session.
To promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers as well as to encourage parent and child bonding through reading, the 1000 Books Foundation has issued a challenge to parents to read 1000 books to their children before kindergarten. Stop in at Maxwell Library to get your first reading log and informational materials, and start reading! Kids can track their progress by looking for their personalized owl stickers on the wall near the picture books.
Keep reading! Digital books count, so help your children become star readers.
Out of reading logs? You can find them here and print them at home.
DID YOU KNOW...
  • Maxwell patrons have access to The Syracuse Post-Standard, including its blog and Syracuse.com site. The content is provided by our system-wide database, Newsbank. Use this link with your library card number and PIN to gain access to online services!
  • OCPL has added a database of resources for test preparation, college and career planning, and related needs. It is the Gale Testing & Education Reference Center (TERC), and it replaces Learning Express. You can get to it through the Tech tab on Maxwell’s website or by going through OCPL’s Database page (scroll down to “T” for testing).
  • Library patrons may borrow one of three OCPL Tech Packs from Maxwell. Each kit (shown below) contains an HP Chromebook and charger, a Verizon hotspot and charger, and a quick start guide for using the equipment. For more information on lending procedures and equipment specifications, see our website or ask at the circulation desk.
Grab-‘n’-Go Printing

During the COVID pandemic, some Maxwell patrons who don’t own a printer may be reluctant to use our public computers when they need to print documents. In order to keep our printer accessible to the largest number of our patrons, we are offering a printing pick-up service.

You can submit documents by attaching them to an email addressed to printing@maxwellmemoriallibrary.org

Then call us at 315-672-3661 during the library's regular hours to schedule a time to pick your job up.

Costs

Costs are the same as for printing when you’re at the library:

  • 25¢ per side B&W
  • 50¢ per side color

You can have the charges put onto your library account, or you can pay cash (exact change, or very close to it, please) when you come to pick the print job up. Note that library policy requires us to suspend most privileges when your balance is $5.00 or more, so the largest print job we can charge to your library card is 20 sides B&W or 10 sides color.

The fine print

  • Because your submission comes to us by email, do not submit documents containing any information you want to keep secure (for instance, Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and so on).
  • Best results will be achieved with files in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or PDF formats. We can print files in many other formats, but the results may look different from what you’re hoping for.
  • We won’t print anything until you contact us. Submissions over a week old are subject to deletion.
  • Library account balances of $3.00 or more can be paid with a credit or debit card online through your library account (https://catalog.onlib.org/polaris/logon.aspx). Borrowing privileges are suspended when the balance on your card gets to $5.00 or more.
Digital Yearbook Collection
This is a perfect time to browse the rest of the New York Heritage Digital Collection! Follow the links and have fun. Click here for a list of random collections within the site.

Patrons familiar with Maxwell’s Local History collection know that the library has amassed a good number of West Genesee school yearbooks for in-house reference. Thanks to a CLRC Access and Digitization Grant, and with the permission of the West Genesee Central School District, those yearbooks have been digitized and uploaded to New York Heritage Digital Collections, a project of the Empire State Library Network.

This collection includes yearbooks from West Genesee High School in Camillus from 1958 to 2016, with some missing volumes. Also included are Camillus High School yearbooks from 1958 and 1959, West Genesee Junior High yearbooks from 1971 to 1987, and a West Genesee Central High School Graduation Program from 1958. We will continue to add yearbooks from 2017 on as current students graduate.

Search all the fascinating archives at the New York Heritage site or go directly to Maxwell’s page and to the yearbook collection page.

We purchase each new high school yearbook (The Genesean) as it is published, but haven't been able to obtain a few earlier volumes: 1961, 1990, and 2003. If you have a copy from one of the missing years and no longer need it, we would greatly appreciate your donation so the collection can be complete. Thank you, and happy reminiscing! NOTE:  Recently donated volumes (1989, 1991, 1992) will be added to the digital collection as soon as possible. Thank you for your generosity.
TBL Peer-Based Suicide Support Group
One of the saddest outcomes of having to close our building has been the temporary suspension of TBL's weekly support sessions at Maxwell. PLEASE, if you or someone you know needs help contact TBL at the number/website shown below, call Contact Community Services at 315-251-0600, or call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 800-273-8255.
Two Brothers' Light (TBL) is a non-profit organization that promotes mental wellness, suicide prevention and awareness. It holds peer-based support groups for individuals affected by suicide and other mental health issues. These meetings are free and open to anyone seeking information on mental health concerns, suicide prevention and awareness, alternatives to suicide, or grief support for those affected by suicide.
For more information,
call 315-632-1996 or go to www.twobrotherslight.org

Are you planning on visiting a New York State or an Onondaga County park? Borrow a NYS Empire Pass or an Onondaga County Park Pass from Maxwell Library before your trip. They may be checked out for three days, and must be returned in person at Maxwell. Call or stop in for more details.
