Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of myself, Erdin Ibraim (our vice-chair) and Satoshi Nishimura (our secretary) I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members on joining TC101. To help getting to know each other, each of you has kindly sent a short bio that you will find below; some of you are “old” friends and the rest I hope will soon be new ones. Some of you will be members nominated by your national societies and some corresponding members. Apart from formal votes where only the nominated members can vote, it makes little difference to us and we just look forward to your active participation whichever you are.
I guess each of us will have been affected differently by the pandemic, both in our personal and professional lives. My laboratory has now been closed for six months and I never thought I would miss so much the pure pleasure of making my research students’ apparatus work or rescuing their tests when all seemed hopeless and dissolving in tears. I am so envious of those of you who have been able to work through and keep your labs going and I become more and more disillusioned with the monotony and downright mediocrity of “home working” and the online realm. I suppose that this only underlines the value of our skills in a world that often seems to denigrate those of us who can actually create tangible new things, new techniques, new tests, new data. I imagine that many of you, like me, will be desperately finding new ways to analyse existing data for our researchers or catching up with vast amounts of previously ignored admin, but even if we complain we must spare a thought for our furloughed colleagues who I guess must find the days very long.
Let’s hope to see an end to this new world order sooner rather than later; no matter how well organised, no online event can ever replace a good coffee time chat at a conference. In the meantime though, we will do what we can, and in our newsletter, kindly put together by Erdin, you will find the forthcoming TC101 activities, many with a degree of uncertainty of course about how they will actually run.
Our conference in Glasgow last year, organised by Alessandro Tarantino and Erdin seems so far away, but was such a great success with many memorable technical contributions and some pretty spectacular Scottish dancing; who knew our members were so talented, or at least enthusiastic?! Since we have no TC101 conference this year, we plan a TC meeting in November, online of course… Until then I wish you all the best, and take care of yourselves,

Olivier Cuisinier
Dr Olivier Cuisinier is Professor of Geotechnics at the Université de Lorraine in Nancy (France). After obtaining his PhD at the Université de Lorraine in 2002, he joined the Soil Mechanics Group at EPFL (Switzerland) for one year. He was then Researcher at the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées LCPC (now IFSTTAR) until 2008. He joined Université de Lorraine in 2008 as Associate Professor, and he was promoted to Professor in 2020. Dr Olivier Cuisinier developed a strong interest on the fundamentals of soil behaviour and advanced laboratory characterisation of geomaterials. He has a research experience in soil mechanics for almost 20 years, including unsaturated expansive soils, naturally and artificially cemented soils with a special emphasis on the long term behaviour of these materials exposed to climatic conditions.

Fuchen Teng
Dr. Fuchen Teng is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Construction Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) in Taipei, Taiwan. He obtained his undergraduate degree in civil engineering (2003) from National Chung Hsing University in Taichung, Taiwan. He received his MS and Ph.D. in Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 2011. After Ph.D. program, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University, USA (2013-2014) and as an engineer at Sinotech Engineering Consultants (2014-2016).
Current research in the Dr. Teng’s lab emphasizes the observation on characteristics of geo-materials encountered in underground construction and Geo-Environmental Engineering: 1) Urban Geo-Engineering includes advanced lab tests, advanced soil constitutive models, and numerical simulation on excavation and tunneling in urban area; 2) Bio-mediated Soil Improvement includes applications of bio- and electroosmosis- soil improvement on soft clays; 3) Geo-Environmental Engineering includes soil decontamination by electro-osmosis technique and characteristics of engineered barrier system material, such as bentonite, in geological disposal

Valentina Lentini
Dr. Valentina Lentini received PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering from University of Catania in 2006. Currently is Assistant Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the University Kore of Enna, where she teaches Geotechnics and Slope Stability. The research activities is mainly devoted to geotechnical earthquake engineering with particular reference to the soil dynamic characterization by means of laboratory test but also to soil-foundation interaction, slope stability and landslide risk evaluation. She has published many papers in scientific journals and technical conferences. She is a member of Editorial Board of the Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment. She is actively involved in the management of activities of the Soil Dynamics and Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory of the University of Enna. She is part of a research group involved in numerous projects supported from the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research.

Gabriele Chiaro
Gabriele Chiaro is a Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering and the Deputy Postgraduate Research Director in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
His research focuses mainly on earthquake geotechnical engineering and related problems, geo-disaster investigation and mitigation, development of state-of-the-art laboratory and field soil testing devices, environmental geotechnics, ground improvement techniques for granular soils as well as development of constitutive model for liquefiable soil response and DEM simulations of the mechanical behaviour of hard-soft gravel-rubber mixtures.
Gabriele holds a BScCE degree (2004) and a MScCE degree (2007) from the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, Italy, and a PhD degree in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (2010) from the University of Tokyo, Japan. Before joining the University of Canterbury in June 2015, Gabriele was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Tokyo, Japan (2010-2011; 2014-2015), and a Research Associate at the University of Wollongong, Australia (2011-2014).
To date, Gabriele has authored over 100 scientific publications. He was awarded the prestigious JSPS Research Fellowship in 2014, and he is the recipient of the 2020 NZSEE Otto Glogau Award. Gabriele served as the Team Leader of the 2016 NZSEE “Learning from Earthquake” Mission in Kumamoto, Japan, and Team Co-leader of the 2015 JGS/JSCE LFE Mission in Gorkha, Nepal. Currently, he is the Science Leader of a $1 million NZD Research Project funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment of NZ (MBIE Smart Ideas Grant, 2018), Co-Editor of the NZ Geomechanics News of the NZ Geotechnical Society, and an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. He is also the selected NZ member of the ISSMGE TC101 “Soil testing”.

Way Way Moinet
Dr. Way Way Moinet is a Chartered and RoGEP Specialist, Principal Engineer at Geotechnical Consulting Group, with over 12 years of experience in advanced laboratory testing, scheduling and interpretation for transportation and energy projects, including a strong background in academic geotechnical laboratory testing, including testing laboratory management, design and development of geotechnical testing apparatus to examine soil behaviour in world class leading research institutions. She completed her MEng and MSc at Imperial College followed by a PhD on model buried pipelines on the shaking table at the University of Tokyo. She spent 5 years as a member of academic staff at Imperial College where she was the Geotechnical Testing Laboratory Manager and taught MSc’s on the Laboratory Testing and Data Interpretation Course.

Prof. Xiao mainly focuses on testing and modeling of granular soils and biocemented soils. He has served for geotechnical engineering in China for 15 years. He now works at Chongqing University. He got the scientific research support from three National Funds (330 thousand U.S. dollars), published about 113 papers (H-Index=25) in Geotechnical Journals and applied twenty Chinese patents. He got many awards, such as 2018 and 2019 Most Cited Chinese Researchers from Elsevier, John Carter Award in IACMAG, Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of Chinese Society for Rock and Mechanics and Engineering, et al. He was the Guest Editor of International Journal of Geomechanics, ASCE, Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, and Geoscience Frontiers (IF=4.3), and he is also of Associate Editor of International Journal of Geomechanics, ASCE, and Editor Board Member of Canadian Geotechnical Journal; Soils and Foundations; et al.

Hennie Barnard
Hennie is a senior geotechnical engineer with 12 years' experience in the geotechnical field and was employed by Golder Associates since June 2018. His current responsibilities include providing geotechnical inputs and designs to various aspects of Mine Waste management and tailings storage facilities. He is also responsible for managing the Golder advanced testing laboratory located in Johannesburg, South Africa. Prior his appointment at Golder, he was working as geotechnical laboratory manager for various commercial laboratories since January 2016. His previous responsibilities include quality assurance on all geotechnical laboratory and field testing as well as interpreting and reporting of test results. He is well experienced in geotechnical testing such as triaxial testing, direct shear, consolidation and permeability testing as well as plate load testing and cone penetration field testing.
He previously also worked in the ground engineering unit of Aurecon group for 7 years since 2009 where he has gained design experience in the fields of foundation and geotechnical engineering as well as site supervision and project management in the fields of civil and geotechnical engineering. Hennie obtained a Master of Engineering (Geotechnical) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, in 2013, after completing his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in 2010 and his bachelor’s degree (Civil) in 2008. He is registered as a Professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) since 2017 and a member of South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) since 2008.

We are extremely pleased to announce the 6th Bishop Lecture will be delivered at the 20th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Sydney in September 2021 by Prof. Carlos Santamarina. The Honour Lecture entitled
“The Assessment of Geotechnical Properties in the Information Age”
will be presented in a special TC101-allocated parallel session.

TC101 contribution for the ICSMGE Sydney 2020
TC101 has one of the largest numbers of abstracts submitted, around 150. We are working with the local Organising Committee to set up the number of TC101 technical sessions. The selection of the papers to be presented will be completed once all the papers are submitted and accepted for publication in the proceedings. Our initial planning is for up to four technical sessions, of which one will be dedicated for Carlos Santamarina’s 6th Bishop Lecture. In each of the other three technical sessions we will opt for larger numbers of short presentations of papers, with a facilitator to generate real and animated discussion.
In addition, we are planning to organise a joint workshop with TC102 (In-Situ Testing), TC203 (Earthquakes) and TC221 (Tailings and Mine Waste) on the static and seismic stability of tailings dams. The proposal is under consideration by the local Organising Committee and more information will follow as soon as a decision is taken.

Report on IS-Glasgow 2019
|
|
The 7th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, IS-Glasgow 2019, took place in Glasgow, UK in June 2019. The Symposium was co-organised by the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and the University of Bristol, two institutions with long-standing records of innovation in geotechnics, under the patronage of the Technical Committee Laboratory Stress Strain Strength Testing of Geomaterials (TC101) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). We are extremely proud of the response from the Geotechnical community, with 200 technical papers submitted and accepted for publication in the Proceedings from participants from 40 countries world-wide.
All papers, available on Open Access, are published online on ES3 Web of Conferences Proceedings (ISBN: 978-2-7598-9064-4), Volume 92 (2019).
We are also particularly proud to introduce Prof. Junichi Koseki who delivered the 5th Bishop Lecture, and the Keynote invited speakers: Emmanouil M Tentzeris (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA), Torsten Wichtmann (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany), Reiko Kuwano (University of Tokyo, Japan), Lyesse Laloui (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland), Giaochino Viggiani (Université Grenoble Alpes, France), Pierre Delage (École des Ponts ParisTech, France), Cristina Jommi (Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands & Politecnico di Milano, Italy), Jonathan Chambers (British Geological Survey, UK), Lidija Zdravkovic (Imperial College, UK) and Andrew Ridley (Geotechnical Observations, UK). The Bishop and Keynote Lecture papers will be published in a special issue of the Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment Journal early 2021.
We would like to express our thanks to all the members of the local organising committee, especially Miss Katharine Houston, one of the most competent professionals we have ever worked with. We also thank the Technical Committee members for the animation of the technical parallel sessions, promotion of the symposium in their countries, and their terrific support in the undertaking of the paper review for which many of the authors wished to express their appreciation for the input and feedback. We thank Hans Henning Stutz and Alejandro Martinez for their efforts in organising the special session on the “Behaviour of Geotechnical Interfaces”. Our gratitude goes towards the Scientific Committee, including members of the ISSMGE TC101, for their continuous support and guidance throughout the past four years. We are very pleased to announce the dates of the 8th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, IS-Porto 2023. The Symposium, organised by the University of Porto, will start on Sunday 3rd of September and end on Wednesday 6th of September 2023.
IS-Porto 2023 is preceded by the XVIII European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ECSMGE) which is held in Lisbon between 26th of August and 31st of August 2023.
Great opportunity to attend both events!

Call for online TC101 meeting
We are pleased to announce that we are planning an online TC101 meeting for 17th November. After our TC business, Professor Junichi Koseki will deliver his 5th Bishop Lecture that some of us were privileged to hear in Glasgow last year. We hope in this way to be able to bring his wonderful lecture to a wider audience. More details will follow shortly by email.

Plans for a TC101 International Workshop in 2021
In between our larger conferences, in recent years it has been the habit of TC101 to organise some more intimate workshops, such as those in Hong Kong (2013), Bristol (2014) and the Swiss Alps (2017). We are pleased to announce that we are in preliminary discussions with Dr. Abdullah Ekinci of the Middle East Technical University, North Cyprus, to organise a similar event. This should ideally be in 2021, but I am sure you will understand that we are delaying detailed planning until we can be sure that the event will take place.
