New report: Data collation and validation of GHG emissions from ASI Members

The external review of published greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy use data from certified ASI Entities, commissioned by ASI and conducted by Atmolite Consulting Pty Ltd., has been finalised and published. The review covers 51 ASI Entities, from 34 ASI Members. Of these, 15 Entities were engaged in aluminium smelting.

The findings represent a snapshot of GHG data disclosures as of July 2020, with granularity at the regional, country and supply chain activity level. The report reveals a number of data-related issues and provides useful insights into the challenges facing ASI’s Members and Entities in adopting a consistent, accurate and complete approach to GHG emissions reporting and public disclosure.

ASI has considered the findings of this outcome evaluation report in its current review process of the ASI Performance Standard, in particular with respect to the Greenhouse Gas Emissions criteria in Principle 5. We have also published a management response to the findings, which are available on a new page on the ASI website.

ASI Standards Revision process: Schedule update

To date, ASI has facilitated over 130 hours worth of web-conference based meetings in its Working Groups and Standard Committee (SC) during 2020, as part of the Standards revision process. Nevertheless, it has come to light that the overall process schedule requires some tweaking in order to give adequate time and focus to fully address some difficult key issues.

As some critical topics of the Standards, such as Greenhouse Gas emissions or Pre-Consumer Scrap, are still being debated, the SC has decided to allot additional time to finalise the Criteria and their guidance before they are published for consultation. The new schedule plans to put the documents out for consultation on 26 February 2021 and a launch of the revised Standards in Q1 2022.

ASI shares lessons learned on LME's Responsible Sourcing Panel Discussion

As many readers will know, London Metal Exchange (LME) is introducing responsible sourcing requirements for all brands listed for good delivery on the LME against physically settled contracts. These requirements are designed to ensure that LME-listed brands appropriately embody relevant responsible sourcing standards.

In this context, the LME Focus Session addressed the nuances across the metals when it comes to responsible sourcing, as well as the similarities. The panel, including Marieke Van der Mijn (ASI Director of Impacts and Partnerships) addressed how responsible sourcing challenges differ from metal to metal, and what lessons can be shared among the metals as they prepare to meet the standards, among other key issues.
