Dear all,

This year has been a particularly difficult year with the presence of Covid: many Malaysians have faced problems such as career interruptions, loss of loved ones, loss of income, and for those who are from the B40 community, they have faced a shortage of food to eat.

It has been around 6 months since I joined the Lean In family as a volunteer with the PR and marketing team, and I am convinced that our work as Lean In Malaysia family is more important than ever.

Last month saw our exclusive screening “Nevertheless”, a film by Sarah Moshman that highlights the pervasiveness of sexual harassment in the workplace and in schools.

Dr. Caroline Heldman from the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media had this to say about the film: “Nevertheless, I would argue is the most important film of the last decade when it comes to really unpacking gender injustice. Director and filmmaker Sarah Moshman does this through an intersectional lens, one that focuses on the ways in which women's various experiences link to different forms of oppression and what we can do to rise up and combat this."

While it is disheartening to witness the high statistics of sexual harassment, take power in the fact that there is strength in unity: the film shows what women - and of course, men -  can do to make the world a safer and better place free of violence for all, regardless of gender.

As we come closer to the end of 2020, I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to reflect on their year and gain strength from the knowledge that we have been surviving a very traumatic pandemic, and that hopefully, this will prepare us for more struggles that are yet to come.

Do not despair. We will enter 2021 stronger.

With love,

Mohani Niza

Exclusive screening of the film “Nevertheless” by Emmy-award winner Sarah Moshman

The cozy screening took place at APW, Bangsar and was also available for people to watch virtually on Zoom.

Taking a look behind the headlines of #MeToo and Time's Up, Nevertheless follows the intimate stories of individuals who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace or in school. The film shows what happens when ordinary, yet powerful women take ownership of their pain to help other women.

Equipped with an all-star panel which was led by our board member and co-founder Sarah Chen, they discussed how we all can begin to shift our culture, rebuild and move forward.

Attendees shared their take-aways of the film after the screening ended:

Kailash, lawyer

“I think it helped me think a lot about how important it is for me to speak up as a man, whether at the workplace, at home or with my friends. Every voice matters in fighting for the cause.”

Surekha, law student

“When it comes to parenting, blue is for boys and pink is for girls ...I think that has to be broken down. The whole notion of stereotyping men and women into conformed ideals should be done away with. Gender should be recognised as a spectrum. Looking at the audience today, there were three guys; this really shows how those involved in the conversations were mostly those affected by the situation or were victims themselves. There needs to be more men in the conversation.”

Laarnia, lawyer

“I think it was the first story about the dispatch officer who was sexually harassed by her colleague that impacted me. She couldn't necessarily help herself but she paved a path for her daughter and that truly reflected what she did for us women. Even if we stumble fighting for ourselves, any fight helps pave a better future for other women in the country.”

Updates from Lean In Malaysia Sabah

Lean In Malaysia Sabah recently conducted another online meetup on 3rd of October 2020, facilitated by our meeting leader Sabrina Aripen.

Sabrina works on key social issues surrounding gender equality, women’s issues and discrimination. She is the founder of Society for Equality, Respect And Trust for All Sabah (SERATA), an organization that advocates for gender equality, especially involving men and boys as part of the solution.

The online meetup discussion centred around what each of us can do to allow themselves to be brilliant, using resources found on the Lean In website. The meeting closed with each member sharing their one brilliant idea that they wish to implement in the coming weeks.

Lean In Malaysia recommends ...

Last month, the world was saddened by the passing of Former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, widely known as the “judge’s judge”. Let’s take a moment to pay tribute to this formidable figure who shook the man’s world and made it a fairer place for women.

Book: My Own Words
Author: Ruth Bader Ginsburg with Mary Hartnett and Wendy W. Williams
Year: 2016

“My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.” - Ruth Bader Ginsburg

My Own Words was the first book by the “Notorious R.B.G” since becoming a Supreme Court Justice in 1993. This publication takes you on a humorous, charming and thoughtful assemblage of literature by Ginsberg, the powerful and extraordinary woman whose influence on the law, the rights of women and popular culture went unmatched.

One of America’s most influential women, Ginsburg  weighed in on gender equality, being Jewish, the law and lawyers in opera and more. A product from hundreds of interviews that biographers Mary Hartnett and Wendy W. Williams had conducted with Ginsburg, this publication also contains her speeches and writings dating back to the eighth grade.

A trailblazer whose legacy will forever remain immortalized despite her long struggle with cancer, Ginsburg shaped the contemporary era of women’s rights even earlier before she went on the Supreme Court.
