President's welcome

President Nigel ParssonsWith a premature end to the 2019/20 season, due to COVID, who would have believed we would be in November and still waiting for the season to start!!!

It seems incredible that we are some 8 months into COVID-19, with numerous lockdowns and changes to our everyday living.

First and foremost I hope that all of you, your families, and those close to you are safe and well. As outlined earlier in the year, please know you all have a family in PCC, that you can reach out to for support and assistance at any time.

It has been exciting to see everyone back to practice mid-week, as well as the intra-club and practice matches over the last two weekends. Thank you all, for taking the time to understand and accommodate the new normal requirements for practice and practice matches so we can all be safe.

Our 2020/21 planning has taken on a slightly different dimension, but both our women's and men's coaching staff have been busy planning and recruiting and it’s wonderful to welcome Damon Eagan, Nick Boland, Oliver Gunning, and Courtney Neale to Prahran. On the back of the 2019/20 cricket season, which was another strong step in the continued direction of achieving our vision of being the “Premier Club of Choice”, these additional recruits will further build our depth of talent at the club.

The committee has kept working hard off the field, in ensuring we are implementing plans to deliver to our strategy. Our new net facility has been a key topic of focus, Council has given us a timeline of mid-December for completion, which will make an incredible difference to our practice facilities. Our Junior Development Program for boys has been the other key area of progress. Matt Dutton will take accountability for this program as well as captaining the 4th XI and we believe this will enable the club to have a leading Junior Development Program for boys to compliment the girl's program.

We have been very thankful that the majority of our sponsor’s have continued to invest in the club and we have been able to welcome Quantuim and UMS as two new sponsors. We thank all our sponsors for their ongoing commitment and involvement in the club, which will enable us to re-invest in key strategic areas.

I also wanted to acknowledge and congratulate Annabel Sutherland on making her Australian ODI debut against New Zealand last month, on the back of her Australia T20 World Cup debut. Also a massive congratulations to Will Sutherland, “Chief”, for being selected in the Australia A squad to play India later in November/December. Will has performed exceptionally well for the Vics since debuting 2 seasons ago and fully deserves his elevation to the Aussie A team. PCC is incredibly proud of both of you.

I am looking forward to personally seeing you all at the club in the coming months and I wish all the players, coaches, parents, committee and volunteers a very safe return to cricket and every success on the field during the season.

Nigel Parsons
President

Playing with Covid-19

As this newsletter goes out Victoria is starting to relax restrictions relating to the control of COVID-19. While these may change as the season proceeds we ask that all players, coaches, volunteers, parents, and supporters abide by the rules in place that will allow us to train for and play a full season of cricket.

The following are the main requirements that we are currently expected to follow.

The club has a Covid Safety Plan and a Covid-19 Safety Officer will be on duty at all grounds.

Training

  • Designated entry and exit points are located at each ground.
  • Players and coaches must check-in and check-out to all sessions.
  • An attendance register is to be maintained
  • Temperatures will be checked and hands must be sanitised on entry and exit.
  • Players to arrive no earlier than 10 minutes prior to the start of the session.
  • Face masks must be worn up to the point of training by players, but all others must wear masks.
  • All players have been provided with an information pack and a commitment form which they must sign and return prior to beginning group training.
  • Training must be conducted in groups of up to eleven, not including coaches.
  • Appropriate social distancing must be observed by all players, coaches, club officials, and parents.

Match Day

  • Change rooms can be open on match days but area quotient rules will apply which may mean sharing access amongst the playing group.
  • All match participants, match officials, club officials, volunteers, and spectators who may spend time near players or officials are required to check-in.
  • Please observe the designated entry and exit points at each ground.
  • Masks are optional while participating in the match but must be worn at all other times.
  • Practice social distancing.
  • Bring your own food and drink as the club will not be providing canteen services.

Men's squad update: steady as she goes

Men's Head Coach, Julien WienerWelcome to season 2020\2021.

Firstly, I trust you and your families are healthy and getting through these remarkable times we’re experiencing.

The past two seasons have given us a strong platform to continue our journey to being the Premier Club of Choice.

While we recognize and enjoy that improvement, the coaching panel has now firmly challenged our playing group to be crystal clear about what they, as individuals and us as a total club, must do to ensure we continue that momentum – and then we fully commit to the work required to deliver on that challenge.

We’ve bolstered our playing list with a number of outstanding recruits including Nick Boland, Damon Egan and Ollie Gunning as well as a number of new, younger players.

A warm welcome to you all and please know that you’re in an environment where we hope you enjoy and get the most from your cricket, build great relationships with your new clubmates, engage in everything we do and become long-term members of the PCC community.

Fortunately, our highly qualified and skilled coaching panel remains intact, except for the departure of David Hemp, who, of course, has recently taken up his new appointment as the Head Coach of the Pakistan Women’s team. We wish him well and appreciate how fortunate those players are to have David looking after them.

Our playing list also remains stable and the coaching panel thanks our players for their continued support, enthusiasm and commitment to the work required to maintain progression and improvement.

Our abbreviated pre-season is chock full of activity culminating in two full dress-rehearsal practice games versus Essendon and Ringwood on November 7th  and 14th respectively.

The construction of our wonderful new training facility continues and we very much look forward to taking full advantage of what it offers.

From a personal perspective, I couldn’t be more excited about what this season and future holds for PCC.

With much hard work and thought from all parts of the club: committee; support staff; volunteers; sponsors; supporters – the players have access to all they need to continue their march forward, on a path of continuous improvement and having loads of fun together while doing it.

Best wishes to all, stay well, and here’s to an enjoyable, successful and entertaining season

Julien Wiener
Men's Head Coach

Women's squad update: a point to prove!

2020/21 will be a season like no other, with considerations around COVID-19, a shortened schedule, and a young playing group. But Prahran's women’s teams are ready to put their best foot forward come Round One. After a dominant semi-final victory and then the disappointment of not being able to participate in the Grand Final due to the Coronavirus epidemic last season, we have a point to prove.

We will have quite a few changes to our playing list this season, with a couple of retirements and some players gaining well-deserved higher honours. We will not have the regular services of Alana King or Erica Kershaw this season, with both ladies having both WBBL contracts and WNCL duties to fulfil. Unfortunately for us their WNCL gigs are with interstate squads so we are therefore unlikely to see them turn out for the True Blues in anything other than a rare guest appearance. We wish them well with their respective representative duties and hope to see them around Toorak Park when they are back in town.

Our coaching panel, however, is unchanged, and this stability will enable the continued growth of our young playing group. We are blessed with what is regarded as the best coaching staff in Women’s Premier Cricket and the confidence and skill development that our two coaches in Carl and Tim provide our players is second to none.

We expect spots in the top two senior grades to be hard-fought this season. With the growth of our younger players and the unavailability of many of last year’s playing group, there is no doubt that selection meetings will feature some lengthy discussions. The opportunities that this season presents our young playing group are unprecedented and we are eager to see their performance elevate as they take on more senior roles in our club.

We are delighted to welcome the highly talented Courtney Neale to the club. Courtney joins us from Dandenong and to have someone of her calibre ask to move to our club is a result of the high standing our program is held in. A current Victorian player and a member of the Melbourne Renegades WBBL squad, Courtney will definitely have an impact on our 1st XI when she is not on representative duties.

Annabel Sutherland, fresh from her ODI debut for Australia, will be our Women’s Club Captain for this season, taking over from retiring captain Emma Inglis. This is a just reward for her hard work over the years she has been with us and we look forward to her leading our team onto Toorak Park when availability allows. An opening bowling attack of Belsy and Courtney Neale should send shivers through opposition top orders.

Ava Bennett, who continues to grow as a leader at our club, will once again captain our Second XI. After participating in their first-ever finals series last season the 2's will be looking to add some consistency to their performances, and maybe some silverware to our trophy cabinet!

Premier Cricket will see the introduction of an inaugural Women’s Third XI Competition this season. We will benefit from the experience our 3rd side gained playing in the Women’s Community Competition last season, so we are ready to hit the ground running. The young side, with many of the players doubling up in our Friday night Junior Development program, will once again be lead by Zoe Quinsey-Munro.

The Junior Development Squad will see the return of many players from last year’s program. With another year’s growth, both in experience and in a physical sense, they will be more than capable of mixing it with the boys they will play against on a Friday evening. We continue to see the fruits of the Development Squad, with around fifty percent of our current senior playing list having progressed through the program.

With four teams now playing out of the club, it’s a very exciting time for Women’s cricket at Prahran and we look forward to the continued development of our young playing group throughout the season.

Development Squad starts off with a win

The Girls Development Squad was the first True Blues team to taste competitive cricket this season.

Playing in the ISEC Friday night mixed U15B grade the girls bowled out the East Malvern Tooronga boys for 54 and then passed their score none-down in the 8th over to finish 0/126 from their 20 overs. Well done girls, a great start to the season!

Australia A selection for the Chief

Huge congratulations to Will Sutherland who has been selected in the 19-player Australia A squad that will face India in early December.

Matches include a three-day match as well as a three-day pink-ball day-night warm-up ahead of the highly anticipated test series.

Will has had a solid start to his Sheffield Shield season capturing 6/156 in the Vics two matches to date, with a best of 3/26 against South Australia.

The first Australia A match against India is scheduled for 6-8 December at the Drummoyne Oval in Sydney.

Billo off to East Torrens

A different approach to this year's pre-season from James Billington showing a clever adaptation to the unique situation we're living through.

Billo headed off inter-state in early September and, after an initial quarantine period in Darwin, is playing premier cricket in Adelaide with the East Torrens Cricket Club.

Although the original plan was for James to head back to the True Blues once our season got underway he has now decided to continue with East Torrens for the remainder of the season.

We'll miss you Billo but make the most of this opportunity and we'll see you in 2021/22.

David Hemp to coach Pakistan women's team

Fantastic to hear that former True Blues player and coach David Hemp has been appointed as the new head coach of the Pakistan women's cricket team.

With 22 international ODIs for Bermuda, 271 First-class matches for Glamorgan and Warwickshire, and recent coaching stints with the Stars and the Victorian Women's teams, David brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the role.

Best wishes Hempy!

Belsy makes her Australian One Day debut

Following her T20 debut against England in early February, Annabel Sutherland became Australian ODI cap No.143 when she lined up against NewZealand in the recent international series.

Belsy received her cap from the injured Ellyse Perry who is quoted as believing that Sutherland "could be one of the best we've ever produced". High praise Annabel, no pressure there!!!

Annabel played in all three matches in the series and collected 2 wickets at 36.5 and, batting in the middle order, a handy 52 runs including a top score of 35 in the last match.

A fabulous start and plenty more to come we think!

Vale Blair Campbell

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Hall of Fame member, 1983/84 Premiership player and Victorian representative, Blair Campbell.

Blair was an outstanding all-round sportsman who played 12 seasons for the First Eleven from 1967 to 1986 and amassed 244 wickets with his deceptive left-arm wrist spinners.

Bucky appointed Vic Men's Head Coach

Although now not recent news we were pleased to see Chris Rogers appointed as the new Victorian Men's Head Coach.

With 25 Tests and over 33,000 career runs behind him we couldn't think of a better person to guide the Vics over the next three years.

Congratulations Bucky!!!

Victorian representatives

With both Annabel and Will Sutherland likely to be regulars in the Victorian Sheffield Shield and WNCL teams this year, we may not see as much of them as we'd like. However, all True Blues are immensely proud of the achievements of the brother-sister combination and we will be closely following their exploits over the summer.

We also welcome fellow Vic rep, and former Dandenong quick, Courtney Neale, to the club and wish all the best of luck for the season ahead.

Inter-state WNCL representatives

We will also be keenly following three True Blues who will be playing for inter-state WNCL teams this year.

Alana King is making the move to Perth to play for the Western Fury, while Erica Kershaw moves to Canberra to join Nicola Hancock in the ACT Meteors.

Good luck ladies and we hope to see you back at Toorak Park before too long.

WBBL and BBL reps

Congratulations to our latest group of WBBL and BBL representatives, from L-R:
  • Will Sutherland - Melbourne Renegades
  • Annabel Sutherland - Melbourne Stars
  • Alana King - Melbourne Stars
  • Jess Duffin - Melbourne Renegades
  • Courtney Neale - Melbourne Renegades
  • Nicola Hancock - Brisbane Heat
  • Erica Kershaw - Hobart Hurricanes
The WBBL kicked off on 25 October and will culminate in the Grand Final on 28 November.

The BBL starts in Hobart on 10 December with the Grand Final scheduled for 6 February 2021.

Toorak Park redevelopment

Sadly, work on the new nets stopped for a period of time during Stage 4 COVID-19 shut down and when these restrictions were relaxed for construction sites, the builder was only allowed to have five workers on the site at any one time.

Stonnington Council, in discussions with the builder, initially indicated that the project would be ready for handover on the 26 November. In these calculations was an anticipated ability to have more than five workers return to the site from the 9 October. As we all know, the lockdown was extended and we are currently expecting a handover in mid-December. The last thing to be completed will be the curator's shed and surrounding landscaping.

It is looking fantastic though. The nets are huge and completed work includes the wall between the nets and the kinder and retaining walls at either end of the complex. The concrete pads for the synthetic wickets have been laid and formwork boxing is underway to allow for concrete pads at the edges of the nets that will be covered in synthetic grass, which allow covers to be stored without impacting the turf wickets.

The framework for the curator's shed is in place and should not take too long to get to lock-up stage.

We have sadly lost our curator, Mitch Hewitt who has accepted the job as Golf Course Superintendent at the Malvern Valley Golf Course. Whilst we are thrilled in this great career step for Mitch and are sad to lose him, The UMS team includes Corey Whiteoak, our new Head Curator at Toorak Park, with support from fellow UMS employees Justin Graham and Lachie Bangs, we are very spoilt by having these three people looking after the ground and wicket preparation.

Fingers are crossed by everyone that the arrangement extends beyond Christmas. Please Santa! 😊

All is looking very exciting for a great summer of cricket at Toorak Park with extra drainage works also underway at Righetti.
