AUS Champs 2022 - Book the Dates!

An important  date to put in your 2022 diary!
Victoria is looking forward to hosting the 2022 Australian Orienteering Championships, centred around Kyneton in Central Victoria.  Playing to Victoria’s orienteering strengths of gold mining and granite, and taking you to a range of the regions most scenic and interesting historic towns, we look forward to welcoming you in 2022.  Further details to follow as locations are finalised.

Vale Terry Murphy

On October 16 Uringa lost a member who was part of the heart and soul of the Uringa Orienteering Club: Terry Murphy.
Terry loved orienteering, he loved competing, and he loved the social side of the sport (and was well known to enjoy a cleansing ale after events).
He was both an urban and bush orienteer.  He participated at all levels nationally and also competed and/or spectated overseas. Terry was one of the inaugural runners in the Sydney Summer Series (the Wednesday afternoon events) and was there every year until this year’s 30th series.
Behind the scenes Terry was a stalwart of the club. If there was help needed at any event, he was there. Terry organised, on behalf of Uringa, the Australian Orienteering Championships at Yuruga in 1999 (especially meritorious as he would have been holding down an onerous professional job at the time). He was known to ensure that others could get their run at an event, whatever the impact on him.
Terry also helped run the club: Club Secretary 1984-1988, Club President 1995-1998, and an inaugural Board member 2019-2020 after Uringa incorporated. Terry was instrumental in preparing the new club constitution as part of the incorporation process. He also represented the club as a delegate to ONSW (1986-1989, 1993-1994).
Over the years Terry also contributed to Orienteering NSW. He was a Board member 1986-1988, and drafted the first constitution for the Association’s incorporation in 1987.
The Helen and Terry Murphy team frequently provided their home for club meetings. More important to many they often hosted the club’s annual social events such as the Christmas Party or Mid-winter dinner. He was an early recipient (1990) of Uringa’s annual President’s Cup, an event at the Christmas Party every year.
Terry had a great love for all sports. He served time on the NRL Judiciary and was often seen in blue – Sydney City, or yellow – Waratahs. He was oft times seen enjoying cucumber sandwiches at the cricket and was a committed fan of Sydney FC.
Our thoughts go out to Helen, Catherine, Clare and Patrick and their families and the wider Murphy clan.

Rob Simson Memorial Seat Launched

Queensland’s Mid Week Orienteering Group had a very special event on Thursday 22 October combining the Mid Week Champs and the “launch” of a beautiful new seat erected seat now in Toohey Forest commemorating the life of Rob Simson. Rob was the former president of Toohey Forest Orienteering Club and Toohey Forest Protection Society. Sixty people attended the event, just about double for the normal Thursday events.

Mapper Geoff Peck drew the special map and set three classic bush courses. The long course is attached here.
Lunch was provided and unfortunately the rain set in just as we were enjoying it. Novelty prizes were presented and Geoff gave a short talk on the orienteering life and times of Rob Simson. Rob’s seat, which overlooks Rob's favourite spot in the forest, is in a most delightful and peaceful spot and it was used for the start and finish for this special event. It was paid for by the Brisbane City Council in recognition of Rob’s valiant efforts to preserve the forest. The plaque was organised by Scott Simson.

One interest of Rob’s was the identification of species of trees and all courses also visited the tree Rob called The Patriarch, probably the largest and oldest tree in Toohey Forest. It also had a special symbol in the map legend! The council rangers still remember Rob berating them for conducting fuel reduction burns based on funding cycles which usually were almost exactly the wrong time to burn most plants!

An annual event is planned on this map in fond memory of Rob Simson.

Orienteering in Vanuatu

Wallaringa Club (OSA) member Ben Schultz has been marooned in Vanuatu - a country of 83 islands in the south-western Pacific.  Ben has done an amazing job of promoting, mapping, organising and running several events on the main island of Efate whilst in the country. The islands are volcanic and coral in origin and in some part incredibly steep and rocky, whilst being covered in thick jungle.

Ben describes one of the events in an email:

Attached is the full long-map from yesterday’s event at Mangaliliu on Efate in Vanuatu....10m contours, so not flat. It is mainly secondary-growth jungle terrain, so difficult to see far but the contours and boulders are prominent (many of the larger boulders are around 8m high, yet we still missed a couple when mapping - the joys of jungle) (Note the bilingual control descriptions). In the end people found their way around the course so the map must have been at least reasonably accurate; something of a relief.

We had a long, short and kids course. The long-course wasn't very long, but the difficulty of the terrain and the lack of experience amongst competitors meant the fastest time was 1 hour 22 minutes.

We expected around 30 people and had 100 turn up. Fortunately, there were just enough maps to go around (with a bit of sharing for some who went in groups). It was a great day, people loved it however as there were only two of us organising the entire thing (including map making) we were utterly knackered by the end.

We had around 30 from the local village join which was fantastic and the chief of the village has asked for another event to be held. I think the village kids are hounding him :)

Thank you to Ben for sharing your experiences and for showing the way orienteering can bring us all together in a time when we are so far apart.

Sport Integrity Australia - Supplements Update

The risks to athletes’ health and integrity from sports supplements have been a long standing concern for athletes, Sports and Sport Integrity Australia. Sport Integrity Australia has been working closely with  the Therapeutic Goods Administration to increase the regulation around supplements to help athletes.

Good news! TGA  have now changed the rules to clarify that sports supplements which meet a certain criteria will have to undergo greater regulation. This means that any supplement which make claims relating to performance in sport, exercise or recreational activity and includes higher risk ingredients such as those in the Poisons Standard or the World Anti-Doping Code Prohibited List, will from 30 November 2020 be subject to new manufacturing, formulation, labelling, evidence and advertising standards. Supplements that include banned ingredients without going through the regulatory process above can face significant fines and penalties under the TGA Act.

While this is a positive step in helping to protect athlete through the greater regulation of products with higher risk ingredients, athletes must not become complacent. Even with these protections the anti-doping risk remains and athletes need to remain diligent about using batch-testing products.

IOF Meeting Minutes Including JWOC/JWMTBO Decision

The IOF Council met via Teams on Friday September 25th. The minutes can be found here.

One of the items on the agenda was the potential participation of junior athletes born in year 2000 at the Junior World Orienteering Championships 2021 (JWOC) and the Junior World MTB Orienteering Championships 2021 (JWMTBOC).
As the corresponding events in 2020 were forced to be cancelled due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the IOF, via the Foot Orienteering Commission and MTB Orienteering Commission respectively, consulted with member federations about whether they supported final-year juniors, born in 2000, being given the opportunity to participate one last time at the championships in 2021.
Based upon their understanding of the consultation answers and further deliberations, the IOF Council decided that there would be no rules changes implemented to allow the participation of athletes born in 2000 at junior championships in 2021.

MTBO News

MTBO 2020 NATIONAL SERIES EVENTS

◪ 21-22 Nov   Kowen Forest and Sparrow Hill, Canberra; ACT State Champs

  • MTBO Sprint Champs - 21 Nov am, Kowen

  • MTBO Middle Champs - 21 Nov pm, Kowen

After careful consideration the ACT MTBO team have made the difficult decision due to very unfortunate weather forecast to postpone this weekend’s 2020 ACT MTBO Championships. The deteriorating weather forecast would have resulted in not safe riding and inevitable tracks damage, that the conditions of the Kowen Forest permit doesn't allow.

We send special apologies to all MTBOers from NSW, who already planned the trip and have been already on a road. We hope you manage to postpone your accommodation.
The confirmed date for ACT MTBO Champs is now 21-22nd November 2020. This is the first date when the Kowen Forest is free of MTB races and is ready to welcome MTBOers on its dry enjoyable trails!
Entries will automatically be transferred to the new date and new entries are also welcome and are open now.
Hopefully the easing of travel restrictions in the meantime may be beneficial for more to be able to attend.

Excellent bonus - OACT Sprint on 22 November in Canberra will extend its start window from 8:30am to accommodate all MTBOers. MTBO Long Champ on 22nd November will extend start window until 11:30am to accommodate all SPRINT participants.

Everyone is welcome to have 4 excellent starts (3 MTBO +1 Foot-O) over 2 days!!!
Everyone is warmly welcomed!!!

New SkiO Competition Rules

The Special Rules for the Ski Orienteering World Cup 2021 and updated Competition Rules valid for Ski Orienteering 2021 Season has been published.

You find the new rules here.

Mental Toughness

Mental toughness (MT) is widely used to describe athletes that perform in pressurized circumstances, adversity or obstacles. While it may seem clear what MT means, no consensus has been reached regarding its conceptualization.

To guide future research and interventions, we critically reviewed the literature and developed the Goal-Expectancy-Self-Control (GES) model that focuses on the most central aspects of MT and explains how MT influences athletes’ performance. The proposed model can lead to the development of effective and specific interventions to enhance mental toughness which target athletes, coaches and sport psychology consultants.
