A People of Prayer

Acts 12 begins with one of Jesus’ three closest apostles killed and martyred for their belief in Jesus. I expected Luke—the author of Acts—to dwell on this, describing some of the drama like he did with Stephen’s death back in chapter 7. But instead, the death of a key figure from the gospels is recorded so quickly that a skimming reader might miss it—13 words to describe what happened; a single verse.
But let us never forget what James—Jesus' brother, who wrote The Epistle of James says, “You do not have, because you do not ask God,” (James 4:2). In His wisdom, God has designed that His people shall participate in what He does. He is impressing upon His people here that when danger threatens the church, the program of God, or the people of God—it’s a call to prayer. God will hear that prayer and answer it and set people free, when He would not have done so otherwise.
Why is this tragedy not amplified in Acts 12? I think the answer is obvious: because this defeat is no defeat. Individual Christians might die, local churches might fall, but Jesus promised in Matthew 16:18 that the gates of Hell would never overcome His church; the church in all its forms prevails, overcomes and rises above the challenges faced.

Acts 12
It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.
8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.

Throughout the ages, churches have faced persecution—but they have always persevered. Sometimes driven underground, sometimes few in number, but the right side of history is ultimately on God’s side.
Herod Agrippa, who killed James, was himself killed by God for his blasphemy. But when that king died, the Word of God grew and multiplied.
Recently, I read about Charles Law, an experimental gas law used in chemistry which in essence means—the greater the heat, the greater the expansion. Over and over again, God’s people have proven this to be true for us. The enemies of God’s people may seem triumphant for a minute, but joy comes in the morning.
Today, I want to encourage you to persevere. To hang in there. To never stop believing. To never stop dreaming of the day when we’ll return. Even though we’re not meeting face-to-face at Castle Hill—we’re together in spirit.
The easiest thing to do is to give up, walk away. To forget our church family and what we mean to each other. For some, it’s already happened. They’ve walked away from Jesus, changed their theological views on Him, or are confused with all that’s happening around them and the world.
We’ve always worshipped together. We’ve appreciated the vast styles of music, preaching and sharing. In essence, we’re a tight family that values everyone from baby Sienna Kross to Leonie Rocke. We have a strong sense of community and encourage involvement and ownership of church life. And we celebrate life together—birthdays, achievements, weddings, engagements, anniversaries, our HSC students and all that life brings.
There’s much happening in the world around us. Unemployment, persecution of Christians, COVID-19, sickness, death, fear and loneliness. We are not to take the events of our day for granted, as though there were nothing we could do about them.
Prayer becomes a mighty, powerful thrust on the part of the people of God at Castle Hill—to change events. Prayer is the most natural response of a heart dependent upon God.
If you are really counting on God to do something, then you will pray about it. You will trust Him; you will communicate with Him. If you are not counting on Him, you probably won’t pray.
If you are really counting on something else, or on someone else—if you think that by your own clever manoeuvring you can get out of a situation, or if you are trusting other human beings to come through—you probably won’t pray.
The basic motive of prayer is a sense of dependence upon God.
I love Lysa TerKeurst’s view on the topic, "The reality is, my prayers don't change God.  But, I am convinced prayer changes me.  Praying boldly boots me out of that stale place of religious habit into authentic connection with God Himself."
Corrie ten Boom asks, "Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?"
If you really think that God, and God alone, can work, and that there are elements of a situation in which only He can change things. Then you pray.
This is what happened to the early church. When they realised James had been put to death, and that this vicious attack of the enemy could be successful, it suddenly crystallised in their minds they had a part to play in God's program. They were to go to God in earnest prayer that Peter might be delivered. They were to go to God in earnest prayer that they may keep on growing and believing—regardless of the circumstances surrounding them.
God heard their prayers. Their requests. And He set Peter free in a wonderful way.
Having pondered on Acts 12, I strongly believe God can set me free from the pressures of this world. He can set you free.

     Free to do His will.
     Free to serve Him.
     Free to pray.
     Free to love others.
Free from the slavery of sin, sinful habits and its consequences.
     Free to share your faith.
Free to help others who are struggling with...

    Church Online

You're invited to join us for our church service from 10:45am to 12:00 pm tomorrow—Sabbath online with the Castle Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Our Church Service this Sabbath, 31 October
This Sabbath we’ll be celebrating Protestant Reformation Day. Dr Darius Jankiewicz will be teaching us about righteousness by faith. I’m looking forward to the music, that John Duncan has been preparing over the last month. Invite your family and friends to join us online from 11:00am.
The Just Shall Live By Faith”. A simple phrase, yet one which lit the world on fire with the light of God’s love and of His word. How did this phrase change a simple German monk from a misunderstanding and fearful man into one of the most well-known names in all Christian history? Does this phrase have any meaning now and can it change us today as it did this monk, Martin Luther?
Join us as Dr Jankiewicz leads us through how God lit the light of the protestant reformation with this remarkably simple yet powerful passage.

“We have nothing to fear for the future,
except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us,
and His teaching in our past history” (Life Sketches pg 196)

Virtual Masterclasses to Raise Funds for ADRA Appeal

Fundraising Information

This virtual masterclass is raising funds for the ADRA Appeal. The ADRA Appeal is the primary source of funding for ADRA projects in Australia that help people experiencing hardship and crisis.

Now more than ever, with many of us working from home, it's easy to indulge and put on some extra kilos. But it doesn't have to be that way! It's never too late to commit to healthy eating and make a real lifestyle change for yourself and your family.

During this masterclass, Dr. Sue Radd, an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and one of Australia's leading nutritionists and health communicators, will share one of her quick and easy plant-based recipes and offer some insight about how different types of food can impact your health and wellbeing. She will also share about how plant-based foods can be used to manage some of the common chronic health conditions.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn from Dr Sue Radd and ask follow-up questions at the end of the session.

Prayer Requests

Prayer isn't passive. Prayer is powerful.
Let's pray together today.
Let’s pray for those in need.
Let's lift our praises and thanks for answered prayer!
Our church family has many needs, and we ask that you keep the following people and situations in your daily prayers for healing, help and support.

Please keep on supporting our production team as they prepare the online services every Monday.

Please keep on supporting and praying for our leadership team, our elderly, children, youth, families.

Year 12 and the HSC
The past week has brought new challenges for many schools and their Year 12 students. Numerous students have been affected by the bomb threats that have interrupted exams and the general school operation. Please pray for peace and understanding in this new set of challenges for Year 12 students and their families.

Many of our HSC students have finished their exams, and there are some still with one or two to go. Thank you for your support of our young people, and we wish them all the best with their future.
Ben
One of Cherie Lockhart's colleagues who attends a church of another denomination was grateful to receive prayer support and encouragement for his son from many in our church family. Ben was the only HSC student at his church.
Thank you for being the caring church family and for all the messages of best wishes and prayers for Ben that Cherie has been able to pass on. He has his last exam on 5 November.
Little Noah
You may recall late last year we shared with you the Pereira's second son, Noah, had been diagnosed with epilepsy, and they were facing the huge and frightening challenge of brain surgery. Here is a post from Facebook from Vanessa and Marcus about their little son, Noah. Please earnestly pray for this beautiful family and this delightful little boy and what they face in his future. Praise God for his progress so far! The family feel God's leading and hand in their challenges.

Dr Alan Gibbons
Steve's dad, Dr Alan Gibbons, has requested prayer for a returned health issue. In 2012, Alan began suffering from the terrible pain of Trigeminal Neuralgia, and after side effects of pain medication affected his heart and neuro functions, was able to have brain surgery in 2013, which alleviated his pain, and he has been doing very well health-wise until about 10 months ago, when the pain returned.
We would ask that you keep Alan in your prayers, that new medication for pain management will be successful, and allow the elimination of heavy drugs that affect his overall well-being. Please pray for Alan's comfort and ability to cope with this new round of health challenges. He and June have a strong network of prayer warriors already praying - let's join them!

Let’s keep on loving each other and supporting those in need.

If you know anyone else who needs or would like prayer,
please send a message to Pr Pablo, Nick, Jess or Marvin.

Ways to Serve
A monthly day to help - First Saturday (or Sunday)
Every day Australia’s first responders risk their lives to help us, but now there’s a day we can help them. First Saturday. If we all make our homes safer once a month, together we can help prevent first responders being called to danger. To look at the tasks you can do around your home, please go to www.nrma.com.au/firstsaturday. Next weekend:
  • Clear your gutters of leaves and debris.
  • Make sure all of your downpipes are clear so that water can drain freely.
  • Make sure you're being safe when doing this task. If in doubt, hire a professional.
Gardening at Church
Although the church building is taking a rest, it is still needing constant care. If you'd like to some weeding or trimming over the holidays or during the week, we'd love you to volunteer!
Community Response
There is also an opportunity to reach out in our community and friends through local service projects. To volunteer to do some gardening at church, or be involved in a community service project, please contact Chris Engel on 041 276 0401.

Fund for Needy Persons (FFNP)

The Greater Sydney Conference runs a charity that gives us the opportunity to provide for those in need.

The aim of the Fund for Needy Persons (FFNP) is to restore independence by helping people get back on their feet again. Funds are used to help resolve the crisis caused by rental or accommodation problems, abuse, unemployment, the illness or death of a family member. The FFNP charity is maintained by the generosity of members who give regularly and when the annual offering is collected.
Contributions to this fund can be made via egiving.org.au/ and search Church Fund for the Needy. Donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible.

ADRA Australia serves humanity so that all may live as God intended
– free from poverty and disadvantage.
You can make monetary donations to ADRA at www.adra.org.au/donate

Because of COVID-19, there is no ADRA Appeal door-knock and there is a worry that ADRA will not have the funds needed to maintain the work that they do – work that sustains and supports so many people who are down and out; people that have been abused, neglected, disabled and, without ADRA's help, have little hope for tomorrow.
"I know that God is faithful," says Malcolm Rea, ADRA Director–Greater Sydney. "He has a heart for poor vulnerable people and will touch the hearts of those who feel that that they have been blessed and during this pandemic and have the capacity to give."
Since we are not able to collect face-to-face this year, there may be a creative way for you to raise funds for such a needy cause. Social media has been a great tool during our world crisis - maybe you have a way to use your network and connections? Share on your Facebook or Instagram page a link or video about ADRA Appeal, to encourage your contacts to donate. ADRA’s website allows donations to go where donors want. Select one of the options provided or specify i.e. Macquarie Fields Community Centre. Alternatively, register for an online fundraising event.

Fresh perspectives on practising our faith, Edited by Jarrod Stackelroth

How can the truths expressed Seventh-day Adventist Church’s fundamental beliefs make a practical difference in your life? It's so important to practise our faith, not just believe it! Knowing what you believe is helpful. Living what you believe is transformational!

Each chapter, first published in Adventist Record, includes questions for group discussion or personal reflection.
Ideal for personal reading, youth and small groups, a Bible study or Sabbath school resource or even a baptismal gift.
