AAUW-Murfreesboro will play host to a Facebook Live discussion on the importance of voting from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. 

The moderated discussion will feature military science faculty member Steve Daugherty, members of the Rutherford County Election Commission Judy Whitehill, MTSU political science professor Dr. Sekou Franklin, and Democracy Project Director Mary Evins.

Participants

Steve Daugherty
Retired U.S. Army Maj. Steve Daugherty, a military science faculty member, will talk about the importance of voting how he hopes to improve Tennessee’s dismal election turnout rates. In 2016, Tennessee had the third worst voter participation rate in the nation with only West Virginia and Hawaii turning out fewer voters.

Judy Whitehill 
A member of the Rutherford County Election Commission, Judy Whitehill will answer questions about the election process in Rutherford County and Tennessee.

Dr. Sekou Franklin
A professor in political science at MTSU, Dr. Sekou Franklin is an expert in African-American politics and racial/ethnic Politics, as well as American and comparative social movements and citizen participation. Dr. Franklin will discuss why your voice matters in the political process.

Dr. Mary Evins
Executive Director of the American Democracy Project, Dr. Mary Evins is a research professor at MTSU who specializes in social and political Hhistory and women's history. The American Democracy Project is a multi-campus initiative that seeks to create an intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement for undergraduates.
