Dear NCA Families,

Last Friday you received a letter from the Archdiocese of Chicago outlining their system-wide holiday schedule. It has been decided that AoC schools will transition to remote learning following Christmas break for a period of two weeks.

NCA Pre School – 8th-grade teachers will provide remote learning from Monday, January 4th through Friday, January 15th. It is imperative to note that this time period is for remote learning and continued academics. It is not an extension of the Christmas holiday break.

As we get closer to this time of transition, NCA will provide our school families with further instructions in order to make sure that technology is available for our students during this time period and that any instructional materials which need to be sent home will be taken care of prior to leaving for Christmas break. Teachers will send home any additional information you will need to be aware of and again stressing the expectations required for online learning in their classes.

NCA Primary School and Middle School are presently working on academic schedules that students will be expected to follow from home. The schedules will include both synchronous (whole group) and asynchronous (independent) learning as outlined in our 2020-2021 Remote Learning Plan. These schedules will be available in the coming weeks in the event we need to transition to remote learning prior to January 4th.

While Dr. Rigg’s letter included a possible option for childcare during these two weeks of remote learning, NCA will not be providing this option. My hope is that our teachers and staff will also use this holiday break to visit with extended family from out of town and, as a result, they will need these two weeks as a time to quarantine.

Thank you for your continued support of NCA and your commitment to keeping our students, teachers, and staff healthy and safe.

Regards,

Christine Huzenis

Dear NCA Parents,

NCA is now accepting applications for new siblings and new students for the 2021-2022 school year. New sibling applications need to be submitted at your earliest convenience to prepare and accommodate current and new families adequately under the recent pandemic guidelines.

If your child has a sibling that will be attending NCA next school year for the first time, please follow both of these steps.

1. Fill out an application by clicking on "New Student Application 2021-22" on SchoolSpeak.

2. Submit a copy of the child's birth certificate to smorrissette@ncaweb.org.

Our current families are always a priority, and we want to ensure that every new sibling spot is accounted for and secure. All applications are due Friday, December 4, 2020. Thank you for your cooperation, and as always, we appreciate you choosing NCA.

Travelers entering or returning to Chicago from states experiencing a surge in new COVID-19 cases are to quarantine for a 14-day period from the time of the last contact within the identified state. This includes both Chicago residents returning from travel to a designated state, and travelers arriving in Chicago from a designated state.

If you are planning to do out of state traveling to any of the above states, your transparency with NCA is necessary to keep our staff and students safe.  Please contact the main office and let us know.  We can provide you with further instructions on quarantining.

Again, we urge everyone to continue to wear masks in public, maintain appropriate social distancing, and regularly wash and sanitize your hands.  The NCA community can only remain healthy and safe if we work together.

A big shout out to all our remote learners who participated in the Wildcat Stomp and sent in pictures and videos. We like to see those dance moves and smiling faces!
Room 4 loved working with leaves this week! They enjoyed a leaf hunt, studying them, and using them to create artwork! Fall fun for all!
Mrs. Elezi's class had a fun and lively lesson on action verbs. They shared examples of how to properly use and identify different types of verbs when reading and writing.
St. Gertrude News

Save the Date-November 14: Feast of St. Gertrude - Recital/Lecture Featuring Works of Florence Price and Margaret Bonds, Two African-American Female Composers From Chicago

Please join us for a free Feast of St. Gertrude event on Saturday, November 14 at 6:30 pm in the church! This year, Mary Clare Barker will give a recital/lecture featuring the music of two Chicago-based African-American women composers, Florence Price and her protégé, Margaret Bonds. Both of these artists were very strong women much like our patroness, St. Gertrude, who used their gifts to make significant cultural contributions in a white, male-dominated field.

All are welcome to attend the live event but MUST register online or at the parish office prior to attending. Links to sign-up will be available as the event draws nearer. The event will also be live-streamed on Facebook and also available afterward on our parish YouTube channel.

Florence Price was the first African-American woman to have a work performed by a major American symphony. Her Symphony in E Minor was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in 1933 at the Chicago World's Fair. Margaret Bonds was the first African-American woman to play as a soloist with the CSO.

Both Price and Bonds enjoyed successful careers as composers, teachers, and performers and drew heavily from the rich African-American musical traditions in their compositions. Both women were prodigious composers of over 200 works each and composed in nearly every genre. Particular attention will be devoted to providing insight into the social climate and attitudes toward women in music and the obstacles that each composer had to overcome.
