Are Electric Vehicles the Future of Freight?
All major commercial truck manufacturers in the United States have introduced at least one electric truck, with plans to continue developing the technology necessary for wide scale adoption.

Electric powered vehicles, long an alternative-fuel staple in the consumer market, have been much slower to gain acceptance in the commercial market. Several vehicle manufacturers, along with advocates in both the public and private sectors, are encouraging the adoption of electric freight vehicles for the logistics industry. While diesel will certainly remain – for now, at least – the most popular fuel choice for commercial vehicles, electric power is gaining momentum.

Many industry experts are convinced that electric vehicles have a real future in the logistics industry. Some analysts predict that in 10-15 years, roughly one third of all commercial vehicles will have either hybrid or full electric power. All major commercial truck manufacturers in the United States have introduced at least one electric truck, with plans to continue developing the technology necessary for wide scale adoption.

Until recently, electric commercial vehicles were largely impractical because of higher initial costs, range limitations, and lack of supporting infrastructure, such as recharging stations. Manufacturers are working with governmental agencies to overcome these barriers. Proponents have seen some success with electric trucks in real-world applications; however, many recent success stories are dependent on public and private partnerships to support the costs of developing technology.

Several major vehicle manufacturers have deployed prototype electric trucks in fleet operations to further research and development, but also to prove the concept’s viability to skeptical customers. While most of this traffic is limited to short distance routes, industry experts see growth potential.

Market disruptors such as environmental regulations, the improvement of solar power generation, and wide-scale demand for reliable, low-impact vehicles continue to force the industry to explore new solutions. It may take another five, ten, even fifteen years for electric to gain dominance, but we know that as needs change, technology and innovation will help the industry to adapt, progress, and rise to the challenge.

Watch for Brake Lights

According to the FMSCA, watching for brake lights several vehicles ahead of you can help prevent safety-critical events.  Focus on several lead vehicles ahead, or at least 15 seconds in front of you. Focusing on the vehicles ahead of you and being aware of their brake lights will allow you to safely react to changing conditions.

Did You Know? It takes 3/4 of a second from the moment your brain sends the signal to your foot to move from the accelerator to when your foot actually applies the brake. In this short period of time, you may have already traveled 60 feet.  Focusing on the vehicles ahead of you will help you react in a safe and timely manner.

COVID-19 Safety Reminders
As we work together to mitigate risk, control, and cope with the impact of COVID-19, we assure you that Pace remains committed to the safety of our carriers, customers, partners, vendors, and employees.  At all Pace facilities, team members including Pace employees and independent contractors, who are going to be in close contact with one another (< 6’ for longer than a few minutes) should wear masks.  These guidelines serve as minimum requirements for every state in which we operate.

Please also keep the following in mind:
  • Social distance where possible (this is the core of every COVID-19 prevention program).  Use personal protective equipment, such as a mask or face covering (PPE) where social distancing can’t be achieved.
  • Use good hygiene and wash your hands frequently.  Clean shared tools between use (e.g. – scanners).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces often (pallet jack handles, door knobs, counter tops, etc.).
  • Report symptomatic instances to your site manager immediately.
Pace will continue to post and use the Visitor Screening Tool and our Temperature Screening Policy at EVERY Pace facility.
