Trick? Treat? Or Trump?

Hello Friends,

We hope you can still find time to create joy and playfulness this season despite the political and pandemic chaos. Halloween was very much the conversation around a neighborhood fire pit Saturday with young families keen on celebrating safely. There was talk of fog machines, flashlight tag, candy catapults and chutes (see below). FabNewport is here to inspire you to make your joy and grow your community.

Halloween will look different this year as we navigate the pandemic. What will you and your family do to bring smiles to trick or treaters in new ways? Some of us will be making candy chutes that may or may not look like the one below.

Please read the stories below: the first features one of our parents, Marica Davis, mother of long-time FabNewporter's Lacie and Gabby; the second features Seij Abe, FabNewport's lead technologist. Seiji has anthropology and computer science degrees and is a passionate maker with boundless energy.

Happy Halloween and Please Vote!

Enjoy our conversation with Marcia Davis, parent of our students, Gabby and Lacie Brown, who've been with us since 2016. Davis expressed her gratitude for the FabNewport team, "You all are boosting and giving them confidence," she said. "Gabby and Lacie think they can do whatever they want, more than ever before, because, in their minds, they have FabNewport behind them to connect them to people, to make them go further."

Seiji Abe, Lead Technologist for FabNewport and PVDYM.
Meet Seiji Abe, FabNewport, and PVD Young Maker’s Lead Technologist. "I believe that ‘connection’ is the lynchpin that determines a person's success in all aspects of their life. If they are disconnected from academics, family, or friends, it becomes much more difficult for them to succeed." said Abe.

Abe said he enjoys working at FabNewport because "everything we do is about collaborative growth and bringing out the best in everybody we work with. It doesn’t matter if we are talking about the growth of our students, staff, or the community at large; everybody involved ends up more confident, capable, and experienced. The hands-on, collaborative, and experientially based learning model that we employ creates a unique and valuable class environment where everybody can take risks, grow, and pursue their passions. I especially love the fact that I can learn right alongside my students; if I don’t know how to do something, we research and find the answer together. "
