Join our Winter Academy 2020

The Winter Academy provides a unique opportunity to get involved in restorative justice and its application in cases of serious harm. We are happy to announce the trainers of the two courses who are not just well recognised practitioners themselves, but also excellent trainers. The Introduction to Restorative Justice course will be delivered by Janine Carroll & Catherine O'Connell, while the trainers of the Restorative Responses to Serious Harm will be Tim Chapman and Gael Cochrane. There are still places for participants, early bird registration is available until 30 October. For more information please visit our website

11th international EFRJ conference
The 11th international EFRJ conference "Justice beyond borders" is scheduled on 24-26 June 2021 in Sassari (Sardinia, Italy). The event was originally planned in 2020, postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Today we launch a new call for abstracts, looking forward to your creative workshop proposals to contribute to the conference programme! The call closes on 23 November, and if it is as successful as last year (168 abstracts received!) we will definitely not postpone the deadline, so please be on time.
At the same time, we ask your opinion about our events in 2021: given the current uncertainties, should we continue with Sassari 2021? If not, what else can the EFRJ propose to keep our community together while waiting for Sassari 2022? Fill in this survey by 9 November: your opinion matters to us!

Safe 2B – International Conference on anti-LGBTI & hate crimes
The two days online conference, organised by The Speak Out Project is taking place on 19 - 20 October 2020. Key topics of the conference will be the application of restorative justice in cases of anti-LGBTI hate crimes and hate speech. This international collaboration has very similar objectives to our running LetsGoByTalking project. Safe To Be has come to its final phase and participating organisations will offer an overview of the outcomes and create an invaluable platform to exchange experiences and ideas in this field. Healing Instead of Punishing
Our member organisation, the TOA-Servicebüro, is organising an online restorative justice-expert day as part of the Restorative Justice Week 2020. The event, Healing instead of Punishing offers international and interdisciplinary perspectives of restorative justice, including an international panel discussion with simultaneous translation between English and German. A detailed programme (in German) and information (in English) about the panel are available.

Restorative Justice Week 2020
The international Restorative Justice Week is taking place this year between 15 - 22 November. The EFRJ highlights two topics as the focus of this year's edition: 1.) the significance of non-punitive justice responses to the harms caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and its repercussions to the various communities; and 2.) the expanding awareness of restorative justice's benefits and its applicability to a wide range of contexts. Like other years, we encourage our members to organise their local events and share information with us through our online form before 5 November 2020. You can also download the RJWeek banner image from our website and use it to communicate about the events.

Good practice guide for virtual restorative justice
Why Me? - the UK based restorative justice organisation has published a detailed practice guide on implementing restorative justice virtually. It is a very useful resource for practitioners who now work remotely or will do so in the future. The Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown measures have made many organisations consider this option, the EFRJ has also published several reports of international meetings exploring the challenges of online restorative work on The Restorative Blog. We are glad that the reports - among other resources - had been useful in the writing of this guide.

Moment of Inspiration - ´Just Arts´

A four weeks long free virtual social justice art festival is taking place now (9-30 October 2020) hosted by Olney Theatre. Themes of social justice pillars – equity, participation, rights, access – are introduced through theatre performances and conversations with artists and activists. The streaming is available on the Online Theatre Centre’s website and YouTube channel. If you cannot wait until December to watch art works related to justice, this is a great warm-up for REstART
