Hello there, mystery buffs! Let's talk mysteries, what do you say?

But first, some internal news:

We have a new colleague at the Mysterious Bookshop: let's welcome Ryan!

He will be taking over the Crime Clubs and will be responsible for online orders as well. Drop him a line at ryan@mysteriousbookshop.com and say howdy!

In other news, our manager Tom is headed back to school! He'll still be at the shop on a part time basis, while your old pal Mike has taken over the manager's position. Get in touch with him at mike@mysteriousbookshop.com.

A not-to-be-missed virtual event will be our Halloween-y Victorian Gothic Panel featuring five--count 'em, five--authors discussing the genre. Details below.

This just in, as they used to say about the news:

New titles from Loren D. Estleman and Brian Selfon (don't miss our live Facebook event, see below!); Frank Musumici (pictured right); and the return of a favorite, Robert Goldsborough's Archie Goes Home in the signed trade paperback edition. A fascinating non-fiction tale from Elizabeth Mitchell features a period in American history fraught with peril, as the country threatens to splinter.

In upcoming Crime Club news, upcoming titles to be featured include the aforementioned Estleman, William Boyle's City Of Margins, Michael Connelly's upcoming Mickey Haller title, The Law Of Innocence, with more announcements to come.

Take a gander at our latest staff pick from our colleague Kacey (click here to see our past favorites), and as always, lots of treasures for the reader and/or collector and/or Sherlockian!

Kacey's Favorite:
And Then There Were None
by Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie has always been one of the biggest names in mystery fiction books but unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to read any of her books. (Shocking, I know) As someone who prides herself on being an avid reader, I knew I had to rectify that as soon as possible. Thankfully, once I was hired to work at the bookshop, that was one of the first books I reached for.

And Then There Were None is a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. 10 strangers are invited to an island where they find out that their supposed host does not actually exist. One by one, they are killed in different ways. Paranoia grows between their dwindling population as they try to figure out which among them is the killer. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and at first, I was frustrated because I felt like I had spent time with all of the characters and was SURE none of them were the murderer. Well, I was wrong. Now, I won't spoil the ending for you but it did rock my world a little bit once it hit. If you've never read Agatha's books, this is a great place to start. Paperback. $15.99

The Nightworkers is an electrifying debut crime novel from Brian Selfon about a Brooklyn family of money launderers thrown into chaos when a runner ends up dead and a bag of dirty money goes missing. Shecky Keenan’s family is under fire―or at least it feels that way. Bank accounts have closed unexpectedly, a strange car has been parked near the house at odd hours, and Emil Scott, an enigmatic artist and the family’s new runner, is missing―along with the $250,000 of dirty money he was carrying. Shecky lives in old Brooklyn with his niece Kerasha and nephew Henry, and while his deepest desire is to keep his little makeshift family safe, that doesn’t stop him from taking advantage of their talents. They love one another, but trust is thin when secrets are the family trade. And someone will be coming for that missing money―soon. Signed. $27.00

In Lincoln's Lie, Elizabeth Mitchell (pictured below, signing at the shop) brings to life the remarkable story of the manipulators of the news and why they decided to play such a dangerous game during a critical period of American history. Her account of Lincoln’s troubled relationship to the press and its role in the Civil War is one that speaks powerfully to our current political crises: fake news, profiteering, Constitutional conflict, and a president at war with the press. $26.00

From Loren D. Estleman comes a brand new installment in his Valentino series!  In Indigo, film detective Valentino is summoned to the estate of Ignacio Bozel to collect a prized donation to the university’s movie library: Bleak Street, a film from the classic noir period, thought lost for more than sixty years. Bleak Street was never released. Its star, Van Oliver, a gifted and charismatic actor with alleged ties to the mob, disappeared while the project was in post-production, presumably murdered by gangland rivals: another one of Hollywood’s unsolved mysteries. Studio bosses elected to shelve the film rather than risk box-office failure. UCLA’s PR Department is excited about the acquisition, but only if Valentino can find a way to sell it in the mainstream media by way of a sensational discovery to coincide with its release: “We want to know what happened to Oliver.” Signed. $25.99

In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and in front of everybody shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird. McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood's Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself. This week we received signed copies of Death in Her Hands, the latest novel from Ottessa Moshfegh. While on her daily walk with her dog in a secluded woods, a woman comes across a note, handwritten and carefully pinned to the ground by stones. "Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body." But there is no dead body. Becoming obsessed with solving this mystery, our narrator imagines who Magda was and how she met her fate. A triumphant blend of horror, suspense, and pitch-black comedy, Death in Her Hands asks us to consider how the stories we tell ourselves both reflect the truth and keep us blind to it. Once again, we are in the hands of a narrator whose unreliability is well earned, and the stakes have never been higher. Signed on a Tip-In Page. $27.00
