Limited Submissions announcements move to Research Blueprint, bimonthly
To reduce email burden, Limited Submissions Calls for Intent to Submit will no longer be announced on a weekly schedule. New Limited Submissions and Calls for Intent to Submit will be updated weekly on the UMOR Limited Submissions homepage, where all current and archived opportunities are listed; select opportunities will be posted in the Research Blueprint newsletter twice monthly, beginning today, November 5. Current subscribers of weekly Limited Submissions emails will automatically be added to the Research Blueprint newsletter distribution; new subscribers can click here to sign up. Contact UMORlimitedsubmissions@umich.edu with questions.

MNORC launches funding for URM researchers
The Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center (MNORC) has launched a pilot/feasibility funding opportunity for underrepresented minority researchers. Awards will support postdoctoral and early career investigators undertaking translational research projects that focus on research advances into clinical practice, population-based interventions related to obesity, policies related to nutrition and obesity, or social determinants of health. Proposals should include identification of barriers to widespread adoption of new science and the testing of interventions to overcome these barriers. Grant proposals involving cross-disciplinary expertise, faculty from different U-M schools, and use of core MNORC laboratories are especially encouraged. This is open to all U-M campuses. Applications are due by 5 p.m. December 7.

2021 Public Engagement Faculty Fellowship application opens
Together with their partners, the Center for Academic Innovation has announced a call for applications to the 2021 cohort of the Public Engagement Faculty Fellowship. This opportunity aims to:
- provide space for faculty to develop skills and incubate project ideas;

- create an interdisciplinary and intergenerational learning community focused on public engagement, and
- foster conversations about institutional and cultural support for public engagement on campus.
The Fellowship includes a 5-week Studio Experience focused on learning, community-building and project development, and a Project Support phase with the opportunity to request in-kind support and up to $10,000 for an ambitious public engagement project. Applications are due December 1. Contact peff.admin@umich.edu with questions.

Arts & Humanities Grants: Beyond Fellowships
Jesse Johnston, PhD, Sr. Research Development Officer, OVPR
Researchers in the arts and humanities often seek support for individual work through fellowships and other awards that support single investigators. These programs include National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowships and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) creative writing support. In some cases these awards are synonymous with grants: I’ve had many conversations with people who refer to “getting an NEH,” meaning that someone received a fellowship award. But when I talk with researchers about pursuing external support for work in the arts and humanities, I often explain that even though fellowship awards receive the most attention, they actually comprise only a small portion of the dispersed funds from either the NEH or NEA. In fact, the majority of funding goes toward collaborative, multi-year projects that support pushing research beyond the academic monograph. For example, the NEH awards as many (or more) dollars for programs that support the creation of research tools like reference resources, the creation of deeply researched and referenced media productions (i.e., non-book publications), and the enhancement of curriculum by humanities scholars; likewise, the NEA supports many community partnerships and research work that investigates the social and economic benefits of arts activity. Researchers in the arts and humanities can expand their funding possibilities by thinking as expansively and creatively as possible about the range of products that their research may produce, and the wider audiences and impacts of their work!
Our recent research development webinar, “Strategies for Federal Humanities and Arts Funding,” offers more details on pursuing these opportunities, as well as overviews of a few current NEH and NEA programs (view the slides for this webinar, or view the video in Dropbox). As always, please get in touch with OVPR’s Research Development team to discuss this and more.
