Project Spotlight: Vaccify

In April 2020, TrustNet Pakistan started an open-source vaccination passporting initiative, called Vaccify, to tackle the pandemic’s digital trust challenges in Pakistan. Specifically, Vaccify is a decentralized ecosystem that enables all hospitals, healthcare centers, laboratories, and testing facilities across Pakistan to easily issue people’s COVID-19 vaccination status in the form of a verifiable credential. Vaccify also facilitates the process of institutions verifying people’s vaccination statuses by providing them the web interface that makes it easy to do so. By using the Vaccify app on their smartphone, people can prove that they have received the COVID-19 vaccination (once it is available).

To see how Vaccify works, here is a demo that walks you through the process of using Vaccify to receive a vaccination credential and using Vaccify to prove to an airline that you have received the COVID-19 vaccination.

The initiative recently released a whitepaper elaborating on the necessity of vaccination passporting in the context of Pakistan’s identity challenges (e.g. paper identities, centralized systems) and how a decentralized verifiable credentialing ecosystem like Vaccify can innovatively tackle some of the challenges.

Vaccify is now looking to collaborate with issuers and verifiers and take its solution to pilot in Pakistan.
If you can support their efforts, please connect with Omer Shafiq.

CCI Workstream Updates

Use Case Implementation

On Tuesday, October 13th, Zeljko Milinovic from the Enduring Net Consortium demoed their Covid Digital Passport (with VeinID) [video]. This solution is aimed to keep staff, visitors and patients safe using their Covid identity verification system. It verifies ID and checks any Covid credentials whilst respecting privacy and adhering to GDPR.

The next CCI use cases & implementations demos are scheduled for October 27th: Digital Immunization Passport [to be presented by Robert Mitwicki] and Covidpass Solution [to be presented by Mustapha Mokass] as featured on the World Economic Forum website.

Rules & Governance

The CCI Governance Framework v2.0 has completed the period of public review and feedback. The editors will be preparing the document for a final version to be released around Oct 19, 2020. Along with the general availability of this version, CCI GF task force members will be attending the Internet Identity Workshop (IIW) in the coming week and will share their learnings from their ecosystem-centric governance framework creation efforts. Additionally, we continue to engage in conversations with domain experts and organizations in order to establish specific sponsorship for a Governance Authority for the work product of this task force.

Coordination & Communications

We have been liaising with the co-chairs of W3C Credentials Community Group (CCG) regarding launching a CCI task force there so that we can conduct relevant IPR-protected work (e.g. vaccine credential taxonomy development), leverage CCG's expertise and reputation in verifiable credential standardization, and learn from CCG's other sub-groups (e.g. Verifiable Credentials for Education Task Force). We have received very positive input from the co-chairs and will discuss with workstream leads soon about the next steps.

Next week, some of our workstream members will attend the Internet Identity Workshop (IIW) and propose sessions around CCI to engage with the broader identity community. We will share our learnings with the community during our October's all-hands call (to be scheduled for Oct 30 soon).
