Sunday Reflections
St John's East Dulwich
Icon, Sending of the Seventy-Two
Sunday 18 October 2020
Feast of St Luke, Evangelist

Dear Friends

This Sunday we keep the feast of St Luke. St Luke is described by Paul as 'the beloved physician', and is believed to be the author of two books in the New Testament, the Gospel of Luke, and the book of the Acts of the Apostles.

In this Sunday's reading, Luke 10.1–9, the disciples are sent out on their mission, and asked to make sacrifices for the sake of the gospel, venturing out without the usual sources of security; "Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road."  In addition, whenever they enter a town, they are to "cure the sick who are there" and say to them, "The kingdom of God has come near to you."

It is interesting that Jesus was keen for his disciples to be agents of healing. At this time of a public health crisis, how can we, as members of the church, be agents of healing, and how can we best show our neighbours that God has come near?

With love and prayers
Gill

Services in church today
There will be simple, said Masses in church at 8am and 10am today. We will also have a service at 11.30am where children and families will be especially welcome.

We will continue to observe social distancing by keeping two metres distance from anyone not in our household or bubble. We will ask people to sanitise their hands on arrival and wear a face covering (this is now mandatory unless you fall within one of the legally defined exemptions). Please also do not congregate in church after the service has finished but make your way to the churchyard instead.

Please stay at home if you are unwell, and do let us know and we can keep you in our prayers.

If you would like to download or print the service sheets, you will find them here:
The 8am service is quieter, and you may prefer to come to that if you are concerned about being in a larger group. The 11.30 service caters for those with young children.

You are welcome to join us, and we look forward to seeing you, but if you would prefer please attend our online service instead at 11am.

Covid-19 - Tier 2
As you will have heard London moved into Tier 2 of the Government’s guidelines from midnight on Friday. You can find what this means here.

The Church of England’s recovery group has published some new guidance on what is and is not permissible at the various tiers and this can be found here.

At St John's we are committed to following the Government's guidance as well as the guidance issued by the Church of England and our own Diocese. In the church building, the Government's guidance states that you can only mingle with people you live with or have formed a support bubble with. After services, you'll notice that we will continue to ask you to move straight outside when the service is over. The Government's guidance for mingling outdoors is that you must not mingle in a group of more than 6 (other than with those you live with or have formed a support bubble with).

As always, please speak directly to one of the clergy or church wardens if you have any feedback, comments or questions about what we are doing at St John's to implement the current guidance.

If your name, address or contact details have changed since last year please complete a 'green form' and return it to the box at the back of church, alternatively you can post it back to church marked 'For the attention of Bradley Collins, administrator'.

Deanery Synod
Would you like to represent our parish at Deanery Synod? We are part of Dulwich Deanery, comprising seven churches in the Dulwich area. Deanery Synods are the formal meetings of the Deanery, and focus on the mission and ministry in the area as well as providing a channel for the sharing of information. The Deanery Synod comprises both clergy and lay members, i.e. those that are not clergy. Synod representatives bring vision, commitment, enthusiasm and open-mindedness to our discussions, and it is hoped that they reflect the diversity of our congregations in gender, age, ethnicity and church tradition. If you would like to be a Synod rep, do talk to our current reps, or to our Vicar, Gill, and think about standing for election at our APCM on 15 November. More information can be found here.

Live streaming from church - can you help?
We are working to enable services at St John’s to be watched live via the internet. Various aspects are being worked on, including arranging a good wifi signal in church, setting up microphones and deciding on the best broadcast medium.

Film camera illustrationOur Zoom services will continue for the moment but we are in a good position to begin live streaming in the next few weeks. What we need now are volunteers who are willing to be part of the team to get our live stream up and running and to volunteer on a Sunday. If you have some technical audio visual knowledge that would be great but don't worry if not. We also need enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to learn.

If you would like to help, please get in touch with either Gill or Raymond  and let us know. Thank you.

Peckham Pantry
Peckham Pantry is a sister project to Southwark Foodbank at Pecan. It is a membership scheme community shop offering dignity and choice for its members, providing support to people on a low income or people recovering from crisis.

Peckham Pantry has been running for 18 months at St Luke’s Church. Its success together with the demand for more of this service led to the shop development at Peckham Park Road. This move will allow more people to access a vital community service.

A community shop where local residents can become members and access a range of services.  The pantry will also offer fresh and healthy food for less.
  • Members pay £4.50 for each pantry shop visit, whilst the actual value of the produce they can buy is around £15 if bought in a commercial shop
  • Healthy Start vouchers accepted
  • Pantry members can pay with cash or card
  • Opportunity to meet new people or become a volunteer
The pantry can help those who are struggling financially to access healthy foods for less so they can budget to cover other essentials. Members can reduce their shopping bills and access a choice of healthy foods. A local pantry can help to alleviate food poverty, promote social inclusion and have a positive impact on mental health.

Please visit our website for further information or contact the team on: 020 7732 0007.
