Kia Ora – Greetings to you all

Primary News - Market Day 2020
Market Day has been a feature of Term 4 for our Primary students for the last few years. With the possibility of Covid levels changing, we did not want to run the risk of our students doing a whole lot of awesome mahi and not being able to get their goods out to their loyal customers....so this year we've gone online!

Have a look at the amazing products our students have designed and applied their market research skills to. Place your order and pay through your Kindo account and your products will be available for delivery on Friday December 4th.

https://sites.google.com/mbas.ac.nz/2020marketday/home

Make sure you check out their business plans on their pages as well...there is a LOT of great thinking that has gone into this!

Ngā mihi,

Anne-Maree McDougall

Senior Student Leaders 2021 and our
"Lifers' Assembly"
It is, once again, a fantastic team of Senior Student Leaders for 2021, all of whom were interviewed for their prospective roles last week.  The interviews were outstanding and the connection, care and sense of contribution to our school, by these young people shone through during the interviews. On Wednesday we have our "Lifers'" Assembly where our senior student leadership team for 2021 will take their chair from this year's leaders and at the same time we will acknowledge 19 students who are this year's Lifers - students who have not attended any other school for their 13 years of their learning journey. This is a really special occasion for us all and we will hold a whole school assembly in the Gym so that all of us can engage in the occasion. A full list of the lifers will be in next week's newsletter.

Community Cybersafety Forum
Each year we like to hold a Cybersafety evening for parents/caregivers to share the latest information we have around cybersafety - not only at school, but at home and in our community too. These forums are run by Netsafe Ltd or Network for Learning (N4L) - the leaders in NZ Cybersafety information and forums.

The purpose of this survey is to invite you to an information (questions/answers) forum and additionally to find out from you what areas of interest you may have, so that we can be highly purposeful in the forum - please note these in the form below. It may well be we will run several break out areas to try to cater for the matters folks want to have covered.  You can complete the survey here.

If you are interested in attending this forum please complete this form by 4:00pm Monday 23rd November, 2020.

Date: Tuesday 24 November, 2020
Venue: School Library
Time: 7pm

If you have any queries please ensure you note these in the survey too.

We have included the link to Netsafe here (https://www.netsafe.org.nz) so you can check out the website and the topics they are able to share with us. Especially interesting is the "Toolkit" Netsafe provides for parents - have a look at this link https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting.

2021 Class Planning
Please let us know if your children will not be attending MBAS next year.  This helps us plan our 2021 classes.
Thank You.
Room 19 - Foundation Class
Science, Design and Technology often shine through in our play.
A simple cardboard box provided some of our creative thinkers with a house... involving cooperation, sharing and considering others ideas. Then trying different 'tools' to get the result they were after. They had even identified a foreman in their group to be responsible for the overall 'build'.
Meanwhile the offcuts became 'ninja stars'. Shaping these and working out how to throw them to get the right amount of rotation and trajectory were hot topics.

Pockets of play elsewhere showed the relationships and connections our tamariki are building through shared play.
Room 21 - Foundation Class
Room 21 had an amazing morning at the museum. We learnt so much more about NZ native birds and about some of the other features of the museum, including the HMS Buffalo. The tamariki had so much fun! A huge thanks to Becs for sharing her incredible new exhibit with us and to our choice parent helpers, Rachel, Katrien and Jess!
Room 22 - Shake Out Drill
DROP - COVER - HOLD last week we participated in the nation wide earthquake shake out drill - the students did so well!
M6 and M8 - DoC Visit
Doc came to visit M6 to talk about the NZ Dotterel. We learnt so many interesting facts about their life cycle, the many threats they have, and what we can do to help boost the population.
Y7/8 Computing
In Y7/8 Computing students have been learning how to code Edison robots. They then competed in a Robotics Olympics where they had to complete a range of challenges. These challenges included: pushing cones off a table and parking their robot in an allocated space. To be successful, students had to utilise their problem solving skills. One group came out on top scoring 3 points. Congratulations Paris Buchanan, Mya Wigglesworth and Anna Smith!
Te Hā o Hei - Waitawheta tramp
Last week Te Hā o Hei students completed an overnight tramp to Waitawheta Hut in the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park. We had challenging weather conditions, rain and cold winds from the south which made reaching the hut and setting up tents a fantastic achievement for everyone who participated. We are really proud of our students who practiced the concept  to leave no trace and to respect the conservation area by packing out what we brought in (all rubbish was removed) and taking only photos and leaving only footprints. We also left the hut tidier than when we arrived and Quinn McCleery made sure the fire was ready to light and there was wood brought in from the shed to look after any trampers who may arrive in the future cold and wet. A huge thanks to all of the fabulous parents who came on our tramp.

By participating in this experience the students had the following learning opportunities.
To...
  • take responsibility for their own health and well-being.
  • persist in the face of difficulty.
  • be aware of their own needs and strengths and those of others.
  • to make decisions, be willing to consider a range of possibilities, and consider risk.
  • plan and organise an overnight tramp.
  • pack appropriate equipment and take sufficient supplies.
  • learn how to navigate using a compass and topographic map.
  • learn how to cross rivers safely.
  • cooperate and collaborate when tramping as a group: on meals, during activities, carrying camping equipment, setup and breakdown of camp.
  • plan and prepare a personal survival kit and first aid kit.
  • participate in scenario activities on outdoor safety and first aid.
  • learn about the history of the area and explore different perspectives on the use and conservation of these resources.
  • identify native flora and fauna
  • uphold the environmental care code (leave no trace) and practice appropriate hut edicate.
The students have been reflecting on this learning experience and how they may have developed or changed and what they have learnt from participating in the overnight tramp.

- To believe in yourself you can do it! Caelen Gubb
- When I was in year 7, I was complaining all the time and felt like giving up, but this     year I got to the hut not    complaining and felt really good. Hayden Bosson
- I can conquer anything I put my mind to. Cerys Green
- My backpack weighed 30 kgs so I really pushed myself to get to the end and I
learnt that my body is stronger than I thought and you can do anything you push
   yourself. Elias May
- My advice to anyone who goes on this trip is don’t give up. Have the proper
equipment but pack only what you need. Try to pack everything in a plastic bag to
   keep everything dry. Luke Lim
- I think the most important thing I learnt is to respect the needs and strengths of
others and how to work to others capabilities and support them. Quinn McCleery
I believe I have developed my fitness and my leadership has improved after the
   tramp. Leon Melde
- I found it pretty hard and exhausting but I enjoyed it and kept going.
   Darcey Grigsby
- This has changed me because I am trying new things and not being afraid.

Y10 Leadership Course
On Sunday the 11th of October we, the year 10 leadership team and Mrs Bloom travelled down to Tongariro National Park, to take part in a week of leadership based activities. Some of our highlights included caving, mountain exploring and our overnight camping exhibition.

On Thursday we all woke up to a chilly morning where we packed and prepared for our overnight tramp up in the snow with Mr Davy and our Hilary Outdoors instructor Mel. Up the mountain we encountered a blizzard, but as a team we were resilient enough to push ourselves to get to our camping spot. Finally we arrived after our 6 hour tramping journey through the rugged terrain up Mt Ruapehu, everyone was exhausted and freezing but we set up our tents and had a warm dinner. We were in our tents by 5 o’clock with numb toes and blue fingers. 6am came around and we opened our tents to a picturesque sunrise coming up over Mt Ngauruhoe. With snow under our feet we packed up and set off on a 5 hour hike back to the Hillary Outdoors Base.

Overall it was an awesome experience where we learnt more leadership skills as a team as well as learning more about ourselves throughout the camp. We would like to thank Mrs Bloom and Mr Davy for taking time out of their week to support us at Hillary Outdoors Camp, as well as our Parents/Caregivers for helping us get there.

Middle years leaders: Tyrese Melde, Milly Lamason, Eve Kendall, Elise Reader, Pete Callesen, Olivia McDonald, Sophie Penwarden, Jakub Markowski, Makaylah Hull and Jack Fiddler.
Dance Showcase
Last night our Year 10 and senior students performed in our 9th annual Dance Showcase. It was a huge success and the standard of performance and skill shown was phenomenal. We also were supported by junior and senior Performing Arts Technology students who did an amazingly professional job on the sound and lighting. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to all staff and parents who came along to support us.
A great show all round - and a special recognition to Mrs Fletcher for her work here - in what was a very disrupted learning year. Well done everyone.
Learning Support

Y12 - Outdoor Education
Over the last two weeks the Year 12 Outdoor Education students have been teaching some of the Year 9 students to rock climb. The Year 12's have done an amazing job sharing their knowledge and skills and motivating the Year 9 students. They have developed their confidence and trust in each other which has been great to see.

Thames Valley Rugby 7's Tournament
On Wednesday our 4 teams travelled to Thames to compete at the Thames Valley Rugby 7's tournament.
It was a brilliant day of fast pace and exciting 7's action with Mercury Bay taking winning Open Grade Boys and Open Grade Girls qualifying them for the Condors National 7's tournament in Auckland in December.
Our 2 U15 boys teams were explosive and entertaining particularly when they faced each other in the semi finals and they showcased the skills that made them Thames Valley Champs for this season.  In the end one team had to win with the other finishing in 3rd position.

Massive thanks to Coaches Simon Mills, Lloyd McQueen, Zane Sloss & Cody Muir for your support in the lead up to this event.  Thanks to all the parents that supported on the day & with transport.

Acknowledgement to Coromandel Area School & Te Whare Kura O Manaia for coming together with our  boys to complete our 1st XV team & to Michelle Dent for the endless work she puts in to make this all possible.

Boys MX Interschools
What a Ride!

Two boys, Tane Skelton and Cody Scott competing in the 12- 16 years old 85/150fcc class representing Mercury Bay Area School headed off to North King Country on March 6th for the first round of the Makz Gear King of the schools MX 2020.  With riders from 68 schools attending, competition was going to be tough.  North King country was a tough track with 24 riders in their class, both boys finished with good points for the day.

Next round was on 10th October hosted by Tauranga MX Club. A tough track this one but the boys dug in and rode hard with Tane and Cody both finishing in the top ten.

The last round was hosted by Rotorua mx club on 16th October. Another tough track with some very challenging conditions. Tane finished 5th and Cody 10th . This was the last round of the series. Congratulations to Hauraki Plains College with 24 riders coming first in the Schools team event. Our Boys with only two riders came in at tenth place out of 68 schools entered.  In the 12-16 85/150 Class by attending all events and top ten finishes at each round Tane Skelton won 3rd overall and Cody Scott finished 5th. So proud of our boys as it was their first time entered in this event. Can't wait for next year.  If there is anybody interested in competing in MX please contact us on our Facebook page MBMX Club.

Well-Being Whispers
A weekly parenting tip or quote provided by the Rangimarie well-being team.
This week we are focussing on our senior students who will be sitting NCEA in a few weeks’ time. Here are a few tips that may help the process along. Good luck everybody!!
Getting ready to study It’s never too late to set up good study habits. Here are some helpful ideas:
  • Find a quiet place to study without distractions.
  • Set-up your study space. Make sure it’s not too cluttered and has everything you might need.
  • Find out as much as you can about the exam so you can prepare.
  • Ask your teacher if you’re unsure of what will be tested.
  • Learn to make ‘mind maps’ and use them to collect ideas and thoughts, use bright colours to help remember important links.
  • Make a plan of what you want to work on in each study session. Break it down into small tasks and work on one task at a time.
  • Take regular short breaks – use this time to have a drink, get something to eat or play with a pet.
  • Ask for help - If you’re having trouble with something you’re studying ask a teacher, friend, sibling or parent to help.
Try these tips and tricks:
  • Stick to a routine by eating and sleeping at around the same time each day
  • Get a good night’s sleep. This gives your brain time to recharge and remember what you’ve learnt.
  • Give yourself mini rewards once you achieve your study goals – watch a TV show or go for a run
  • Keep focused on your study – don’t let other stuff like friendship worries distract you.
  • Avoid junk food - it will bring a sudden burst of energy and then fall away quickly leaving you feeling worn-out.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet - lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals, grains, nuts and protein are all good for the brain and energy levels.
  • Allow yourself time to rest – try out some relaxation activities like deep breathing, meditation or listening to music.
  • Cut back on energy drinks they can increase nerves. Drink lots of water instead!
