Analysis: Retail Mushroom Performance Remains Strong
An analysis of retail data through September 6th shows that mushroom sales are more than 20% ahead of last year in dollars and 17% ahead in pounds. The retail insights also show that mushrooms have placed in the top 10 of fruits and vegetables with the highest year-over-year absolute dollar gains for 26 straight weeks.

Interestingly, during the last week of August, mushrooms sales performed extremely well. Typically, that week is down at retail, so mushroom sales remain strong.

A consumer survey conducted by Dr. Mark Lang in April 2020 revealed that the drivers of growth in mushroom consumption are:
  • Mushrooms add a lot of flavor to a meal or recipe
  • Mushrooms are a versatile food that can be used in many ways
  • Consuming fresh mushrooms contributes to better nutrition and health
  • Mushrooms are a moderately priced produce item
  • Mushrooms are a highly environmentally sustainable crop to produce

Restaurant Business Magazine Reports on How Diners Are Ordering Now
In a recent consumer trends article for Restaurant Business, Joe Guszkowski reported on four trends that show how diners are ordering today as people are starting to return to dining rooms.
  1. Off-premise is still the preferred method. While restrictions ease in most parts of the country, more consumers are dining in. As of late August, 41% of consumers had dined indoors since it became available. Still, dining-in trailed off-premise service formats, with drive-thru leading with 68% of consumers using it, followed by takeout at 63%, curbside pickup at 48% and delivery at 45%.
  2. Digital orders are slowing. Orders coming in from digital channels have experienced a slight decrease as more consumers dine in. In April, digital orders accounted for 20% of restaurant visits, and in August, that figure dropped to 17%.
  3. Delivery orders are nearly split between first- and third-party. In July, 43% of consumers ordered delivery directly from a restaurant, while 37% ordered from a third party service provider like Door Dash.
  4. Gen Z consumers are most likely to order online for pickup or delivery than other diners. Nine percent of Gen Z diners ordered via app or website for pickup, while 8% of consumers did so overall.
