Information Resources for Herefordshire

Welcome to the third Information Bulletin from Herefordshire Safeguarding Boards and Partnerships. We are now combining Coronavirus (COVID-19) information and other safeguarding related information into one weekly bulletin.

Please consider disseminating appropriately across your organisations and networks.
You will also be able to find this information and more on our website https://herefordshiresafeguardingboards.org.uk/

ICON is an evidence based programme developed after Dr Suzanne Smith PhD undertook extensive research into the prevention of Abusive Head Trauma. The research suggested that some parents/carers lose control when a baby’s crying becomes too much. Some go on to shake a baby with devastating consequences.
ICON is all about helping people who care for babies to cope with crying.

I – its normal for babies to cry
C – comforting methods can help
O – it’s OK to walk away
N – never, ever shake a baby

ICON is an evidence based programme consisting of brief ‘touchpoint’ interventions that reinforce the simple message making up the ICON acronym. More information on ICON, including their latest newsletter can be found here:

NHS Herefordshire & Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are supporting the resourcing of ICON across both counties, and more information will be included in future information bulletins as it becomes available.

Request to send in your Good News stories

This year of course has been very difficult for many, especially in the area of safeguarding, but we are also aware that many professionals have adapted to the challenging times we have all faced and have come up with new and innovative ways of working.

If you have a successful new way of working that you would like to tell others about, or just a general good news story about working in safeguarding in the current climate, then we would love to hear from you.

Please send submissions of ideally no more than 150 words to the team at admin.sbu@herefordshire.gov.uk

We will include a selection in future information bulletins, and reserve the right to edit for publication.

P.O.V. (Point of View) Rural Youth Programme 2020-24

A new project from Rural Media, supported by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, giving a chance for rural 14-25 year olds across Herefordshire to speak their minds, share their thoughts, feelings and experiences, and influence government policy that directly affect their lives.

In short, empowering rural young people to speak their minds, get their voices heard and make a difference.

With increasing levels of isolation amplified by COVID-19, rural young people are vastly underrepresented across the cultural landscape. This new project will look to reach young people throughout the region to collect a comprehensive picture of their point of view and discuss wider public perception. It will shine a spotlight on issues that rural young people are dealing with every day, including mental health, rural isolation, identity and racism, and create a series of new creative projects that directly address how rural young people think, feel and express themselves.

From October 2020 to March 2021 rural young people living in Herefordshire will be consulted through surveys, interviews, one-to-one testimonies and creative consultation. The project aims to boost social mobility, life skills and career opportunities for hundreds of unheard rural young people, channeling their lived experience into compelling creative advocacy to shine a spotlight on their lives and bring about change.

For information about the project, please contact Toni Cook Outreach and Development Officer; tonic@ruralmedia.co.uk
