Call open: Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship

The call for the Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship (DLF), for which the LNVH is official nominator, is opened. The Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship (DLF) is awarded annually to a leading researcher to work on cutting-edge research at the interface between the humanities and social sciences on the one hand and the natural and technological sciences on the other. A Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship consists, among others, of a fellowship at NIAS for 5 to 10 months between September and June at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS-KNAW). The NIAS-Lorentz Program is a collaboration between NIAS and the Lorentz Centre, and is supported by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science (KNAW), the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and Leiden University.

We welcome your suggestions for or ideas about high potential candidates preferably before October 21st 2020 via info@lnvh.nl. Please include a recent CV of the candidate proposed by you and a brief substantiation of your nomination.

Registration open: LNVH Affiliates' Meeting

On October 27th (15:45-17:30), the annual LNVH Affiliates’ meeting will take place. The Affiliates’ Meeting is an occasion for LNVH affiliates to come together and meet each other. This time we’ll meet online and, despite the restrictive measures, we'll make this a great opportunity to see and speak to each other and to welcome new affiliates.

This year's theme is New Leadership. We’ll discuss what the leadership of the (near) future should look like. We’ll do this with insightful input from Astrid Elburg, advisor on organizational change and leadership consultant. There are important developments going on, both within and outside academia: we are dealing with a major crisis that demands a lot from leadership. Moreover, this crisis also further exposes that diversity and inclusion in science are still not self-evident themes. Within academia, we are working on a completely new way of 'Recognition and Rewards’: structural changes will be implemented in the way we see and assess the quality of science and scientists. This also requires a lot of and from leadership. What exactly does it require and how do we see our own individual roles in these changes? Enough food for thought for an inspiring meeting!

After a keynote by and an interview with Astrid Elburg, led by Desiree Hoving, we’ll give the floor to Maartje Laterveer, journalist, writer and D&I consultant, who will share her views on leadership in times of change, in a column written especially for this occasion. During the meeting, the plans for the new LNVH annual leadership program: "Transformative Leadership" with LNVH-chair Hanneke Takkenberg. Keep an eye out for our website and social media for more updates on the programme.

Masterclass Diversity & Inclusion

What knowledge and "tools" does a D&I professional need in their field of work? Preparation is half the battle. Experience shows that if the basic elements of D&I are in order, you can create more overview, self-confidence grows and the passion for the theme of diversity and inclusion grows.

Together with Radboud University, Talent naar de Top is organizing two masterclasses on 3 and 4 December 2020 (in Dutch). In these two days, four themes will be discussed for (prospective) professionals in the field of D&I in which a “state of the art” scientific framework comes together with practical insights. These masterclasses are given by Professor of Business Administration Yvonne Benschop of Radboud University and Sandra Doelman, senior consultant and trainer at Talent naar de Top. VSNU publishes ‘Universities in times of corona’

On Monday 31 August, VSNU chair Pieter Duisenberg presented the e-zine ‘Universities in times of corona’ to Ingrid Van Engelshoven, Minister of Education, Culture and Science. The e-zine contains a selection of the corona-related research and initiatives of universities in The Netherlands.

Students and scientists devote themselves in various ways to provide inventive solutions to the society. From health risk factors to privacy issues, from the psychological impact of a lockdown to the development of ventilation machines, universities are working on the impact of the corona virus across a broad range of fields. The e-zine bundles these initiatives and provides insights into more detailed information about the initiatives and studies that are being carried out in collaboration with different European and international companies and partners.
