The month of October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Make sure to practice kindness, speak up, and speak out about bullying this month and every month.

Statewide Equity Policy

On the October 9th Staff Development Day staff participated in virtual professional development sessions.  The topics centered on including ALL students.  Virtual presenters included Dr. Julie Causton, Shelley Moore, Dr. Patrice Fenton and Tara Brach.  Staff discussed the Statewide Equity Policy, linked above, and how it pertains to our work with students at HCS.

World Mental Health Day

The administrative and counseling team celebrated World Mental Health Day during their staff development day last week.

National School Lunch Week

This week is #NationalSchoolLunchWeek. We would like to remind families that the USDA is covering the cost of school meals during COVID-19. This is confidential and not just for low-income people.

Taking advantage of the free school meals being offered helps the local food service program stay financially afloat!

Elementary Updates

Pumpkin Project

Ms. Ross' class worked on their pumpkin project. Each student chose their favorite storybook character and decorated their pumpkin! They are now writing a book report on the story they chose.

Fall Recess

Recess monitor, Mrs. Thompson, and second grader, Kassandra Kelly, enjoy Fall Recess.

Mrs. Cushing's Circus

Step right up to the greatest third grade circus of all time!  Since we can't go to the circus due to Covid, Mrs. Cushing brought the circus to her students! Her students were surprised with a multiplication circus.  They turned into animals and visited different "performances."  At each performance they worked together to solve a multiplication problem using the strategy of their choice. For each successfully completed performance they earned tickets that they could use to purchase carnival treats such as cotton candy, popcorn, juice and circus themed ducks.

Ties and Tutus

The following students were chosen for the character trait Open-Mindedness.  Open-Mindedness means you like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions. Pictured below are the following students:  Faith LaRose, Isla Jerome, Wyatt Strader, Abigail Clary, Brooklyn Knowlton, Cody Ethridge, Liam Carroll, Eli O’Dell, Evan Moncrief, Maria Sawyer, Bella Lopez, Lynzee Spiak, James Nichols, Natalee Spiak, Molly Tyo, Isabella Forsythe, Noa Kirby, Ava McGaw, Tyler Ashlaw, Lia Fenton, Ava Blackburn, Chelsie Simmons-Noel, Carolyn Gleeson, and Ireland Jordan.

Positivity Project

The P2 Team has been working with students to have them share what a Positivity Project Character Trait means to them.

Drew Demers and Josh Wrobel share what teamwork means to them in this 40 second video.

  • Name a team or group you've been a part of.
  • What makes a team successful?
  • Is there any downside to working as a team?
Students are also sharing writings about p2 Character Traits:

The week of 9/21 = Curiosity

Kyle Ceresoli (grade 12) said,  "Curiosity means being optimistic to learn or try new things.  I believe it comes naturally for the most part but your parents influence it. It's important so you learn and experience things. "

Kaylee Simmons-Noel (grade 9) said, "Curiosity is the feeling of wanting to know something, a want to explore the unknown in the world. We don't learn curiosity, it is just there pushing us ahead to keep going like a strong wind leading us to explore. Curiosity keeps people going, keeps people inventing things, rather than getting stuck in one way or another.

 The week of 9/28 = Teamwork/Citizenship

Elektra Jones (grade 9): “Teamwork is when you work together to get something accomplished. You make sure you do it right and you do it together. Like soccer, you wouldn’t know what your teammates are thinking unless you strategize with them. That’s what a team is, they work together and hear each other out. They all share their plans. Citizenship means to be there for the people of your country or city or state and work on your own tasks.”

Brendan Gibson (grade 12): “To me teamwork means to work together despite your differences in order to achieve a common goal while in the process forming a close bond of trust between one another.”
