- Offering Full-Service in a Self-Serve World

<<First Name>>

It’s been years since I’ve pulled into a full-service gas station.  I didn’t mind paying a few cents more per gallon whenever I stopped in at Home Oil.  While filling up the tank with gas, I would often chat with Mike and get the latest fishing updates, hunting updates or find out how his grandkids were doing.  Full-service gas stations would even take the time to check the oil, wash your windows, and even check the tires, ensuring your vehicle was in top shape before hitting the road.  Nowadays, we pay at the pump without ever saying hi to anyone.

We often live our lives in a self-serve, do whatever makes you happy kind of world.  So when we encounter the selflessness of someone else, we notice.  Those that offer full-service stand out above the rest, and during a pandemic it shines even more.  Offering full-service in a self-serve world leads to genuine community and helps us experience a sense of belonging.

This past week I was reflecting on the community support we have received.  When COVID shut down possible facilities for us to meet in, Terry Fredrickson and Elko Baseball graciously welcomed us into their facilities, giving us a home for worship.  The city staff and city council stepped up to help us navigate the correct permits and waived the typical fees because they saw that we offer something of value to the community.  When the weather started getting cool Firehouse Grille opened up their restaurant so we could gather in doors.  As we searched for a space for youth group, the Just for Kix Dance studio opened up its doors so our Wednesday Prayer Group and Youth Group would have a safe place to gather.  And when the apples were ready for picking, Nelson’s Apple Farm invited us to pick apples to distribute to those in need.

Not a single business, or individual ever asked for or expected anything in return.

I love our community.  I love the support we have received from others.  It is the kind of full-service that inspires others to be at their best.  It’s the kind of service that changes things, and changes us along the way.  Imagine what it would look like to start offering full-service in a self-serve kind of world?  Imagine the good you can bring to your relationships, to your home, and even the community.

This week we continue our series Together by looking at how offering full-service in a self-serve world can help our relationships stand out.  Jesus called his followers to serve with the same kind of selfless love he had shown them.  While full-service gas stations may be a thing of the past, our relationships will shine with selfless love.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Gordon
