Description: Medical students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status often face unique challenges as they complete undergraduate medical education and prepare for residency due to the uncertainty of their immigration status, inability to access federal student aid funds and limited support networks. With the growing number of medical students with DACA status, medical schools need to develop effective approaches and models that are scalable to support these learners and continue to diversify the physician workforce.
This webinar will explore the obstacles medical school DACA recipients and undocumented students face as they approach residency and begin graduate medical education. It will feature a personal narrative from a current resident on navigating the graduate medical education process and needed supports for their career trajectory and well-being. Panelists will also highlight perspectives from graduate medical education professionals and program directors on logistical and policy/legal considerations when interviewing and selecting students with DACA status for residency positions. Additionally, the webinar will address support systems and effective institutional practices and community partnerships.
Learning Objectives:
Consider the hurdles facing medical students with DACA status as they begin residency application.
Identify logistical and legal considerations when interviewing students with DACA status for residency positions.
Explore and consider effective admissions and selection practices, funding approaches, and support models tailored to students with DACA status.
