School Mental Health Navigators COP Reconvenes on October 21, 2020 at Noon – Join Us!

Join us on October 21 for the School Mental Health Navigators Community of Practice. The Navigator COP meets monthly online during the school year so navigators can connect on best practices and share resources. Whether you are called a navigator or have taken on the tasks without the title, we want to learn from you! Topics for this month include: 1) Schools and therapist costs – what’s fair? Should the district cover therapist insurance, continuing education, licensure renewal, travel, etc?; 2) Recruiting therapists to work in your school – challenges with supervision and ensuring quality work; and 3) Coordinating mental health in COVID times – delivering teletherapy services for children in-person at school, and 4) Releases for students receiving school mental health services.

Permanency Plan Tool Now on DPI Website

Recent statutory changes allow schools to provide input in permanency plan hearings and reviews for students in out-of-home care (such as foster care, etc.). DPI created some resources to help school staff understand the process and facilitate school input.

Go to: https://dpi.wi.gov/foster-care/child-welfare-and-school-collaboration and scroll down to the section on “School Input for Permanency Plan Hearings and Reviews” to access a fillable form that can be used by school representatives to determine what information, if any, may be relevant for the school to present to a judge or administrative review panel regarding a student in out-of-home care.

OCI Issues Bulletin on Telemedicine Coverage

This week WI Commissioner of Insurance Mark Afable issued a bulletin directed to health plans regarding the importance of continued coverage of telehealth services as the pandemic persists. The bulletin emphasizes that issuers "who lack access to telehealth services where in-person services are not available may be found by OCI to lack an adequate provider network..." WAFCA has communicated with a number of members who are experiencing denials of telehealth coverage from private health plans. This bulletin sends a strong signal regarding potential enforcement action. Providers should continue to support consumers in filing coverage complaints with OCI.
