In Trust, Pete Buttigieg demonstrates how trust will be essential in order to face the unique challenges of the decades ahead. An urgent call to foster an “American way of trust” at this painfully polarized juncture in the nation’s history, Trust is a direct reckoning with the prevailing corruption of social responsibility. Yet refusing to give in to the despair that threatens our foundations, Trust seeks to inspire Americans to build a powerful movement that will define all of us in the years to come. Liveright $23.95

Mercies of the Fallen is the second of her American Civil War Brides series, following Seven Aprils. Plantation heiress Ursula Kingsley is content with her secluded life in a convent, until the bloodiest day of the Civil War. Blinded Rowan Buckley is in deep love with the woman who pulled him off the battlefield.  He knows she’s full of secrets, but is treason one of them? The two negotiate the crucial times and battles. Treachery meets them at every crossroad. Will their love survive?  Eileen Charbonneau is the author of the multiple award-winning Code Talker Chronicles series as well as historical novels for adults and young people.  Her stories explore America through eyes seldom put front and center: her immigrants, her native peoples, her women. Eileen’s books have been praised by Kirkus, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist and many others.  She runs a small bed and breakfast inn with her husband in the brave little state of Vermont, where the world appears on their doorstep to see the leaves go glorious every autumn. Eileen is addicted to maple creemies, period dramas and American roots music.

In Monsignor’s Agent, Alison, US Army Intelligence agent and would-be Mata Hari, agrees to help Vatican Security track a potential assassin. She flies to Malta, meets with the contact, and hires a boat and crew to smuggle her and the suspect into Italy. Max, history buff, former rock drummer, unintentional ex-pat, and bartender in Malta, needs extra cash so he can return to the States. Hired on the boat as cook, he impresses Alison by discovering what the suspect has in his two huge suitcases…just before the man gives them the slip. This Mediterranean boat trip is no vacation cruise, and it will take quick thinking to avoid potential death while capturing the villain red-handed Bill Lockwood is retired as a social services worker for both the States of Maryland and Vermont. He has been an avid amateur theater participant and writer. Bill Lockwood grew up in Baltimore City where he was among a group that founded the community off Broadway size house Fells Point Theatre in 1973. In the ‘80s he wrote articles and theater reviews in Stage Right, a local Theater newsletter in Baltimore. In 1992 he moved to Southeastern Vermont. He had four short stories published in literary magazines in the mid ‘90s and wrote articles covering the arts, personalities, and rural downtown development in the Bellows Falls Town Crier and other local publications as well as Vermont tourist magazines. He was very active in the community in Bellows Falls participating on a number of civic committees including the annual Old Home Days event. In 2006 he received the Greater Falls Regional Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year Award for his work as Chairman of the Bellows Falls Opera House Restoration Committee upon the successful completion of their ten year project. This is his fourth novel with The Wild Rose Press.

Westminster West resident Jessie Haas will virtually visit Village Square Booksellers on Saturday October 17 at 11 am to discuss her newest horse novel, The Hungry Place. In this horse adventure perfect for fans of Black Beauty, a Connemara pony is pampered and beloved, then abused and neglected, until twelve-year-old Rae brings love to her again. Princess lives a charmed life of brown sugar cubes, crunchy apples, sweet grass, and adoration. But it is a lonely life; her elderly owner keeps Princess separate from other ponies so his show-ring champion will remain pristine. When Princess's owner has a stroke, she is thrust into the care of an unscrupulous trainer and his wife, who steal from the farm and leave. Abandoned to starve with other, tougher ponies, Princess is bereft of all hope. Meanwhile, a girl named Rae wants a pony more than anything and is striving to make her unrealistic dream a reality. Rae and Princess need each other, though neither realizes this when they eventually meet. Rae must learn to see beyond Princess's scars and Princess must learn to trust again in order for them both to find their own hidden strengths and a home in each other.

Jessie Haas has written more than thirty-five books, most of them about horses. Her novels include Rescue, A Junior Library Guild selection, Shaper, which won a Golden Kite Honor Award, and Unbroken, which was a Publishers Weekly Best Book, a School Library Journal Best Book, and a CCBC Choice, among other honors.
