Adopt-a-Drain is a city program launched two years ago allowing Houstonians to “adopt” and maintain stormwater drains near their homes or businesses. Adopters clear areas around the drains from leaves and debris, especially before storms. This volunteer effort helps reduce neighborhood flooding and saves tax dollars spent on maintenance. The city spends $13 million annually cleaning and maintaining storm drains. A fun feature of the program involves participants personalizing and naming their adopted drains.
We are excited to partner with Keep Houston Beautiful, Houston ToolBank, Houston Public Works, and Volunteer Houston on this contest. The Houston ToolBank generously donated a $500 DeWalt power tool kit for our first- prize winner! Additionally, our first-prize and community-choice winners will receive drain maintenance tools and a custom blue tile plaque displaying the winning names.
