Commodore's Log

Now is the time to sail: I hope that most of you are able to get back on the water now that the county’s same household restriction has been lifted for recreational boating.

New Protocols: As a reminder there are protocols that need to be followed in order to insure everyone’s safety.  There is a link to the protocol document on the club’s website home page.  Below is a summary:

Skippers of each boat need to adhere to the following:

  • Log each person on board in the sailing log

  • Confirm that no person on board has illness in last 14 days or signs of illness

  • Ensure all persons on board wear face covering if not in same household

  • Provide hand sanitizer for all persons on board

  • Disinfect boat after use with spray/wipes - skipper to provide disinfectant

Membership:  We have also resumed water lessons and had new members start this month.   The total club membership is understandably low due to being closed to new members for the six months.   The club needs you to renew next year and to bring in new members!  There is a $50 dues credit for each new member you refer to the club.

I look forward to seeing you out on the waters.  Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions, tkush@msn.com.

Electrical Safety at the dock

Our marina (and most other marinas) are not wired with GFI (ground fault) protection circuits.  Especially in the marine environment, this could pose significant risk while using AC powered devices on the dock or on the boats.  A faulty connector or worn cord could result in electrical current flowing in the water or through the boat resulting in a shock hazard.  An excellent explanation of this is detailed in a West Marine article (the link is https://www.westmarine.com/WestAdvisor/ELCI%20-GFCI-Electrical-Shock-Protection).

In order to obviate this hazard, we have installed a short extension cord with a built in GFI protector to the electrical box attached to the dock box containing the battery packs, bilge pump, and electrical supplies.  Any tools or extension cords used on the dock should be connected only via this protection device.  The cord and protector are stored inside the dock box and remain connected to the electrical circuit breaker box which is attached to the dock box (see photos below).

Please let me know if you have questions regarding this new setup.

Best,
