Dear Reader:

Welcome to the newly launched Arts Magazine! Inspired by the print legacy Arts Magazine (1926-1992), we aim to bring incisive arts writing, commentary, and criticism into digital space, while keeping art history alive with it.

The arrival of global lockdown sped up the art world’s understanding of – and reliance on – digital media as the central means of communication. It also brought with it delays and changes in plans. Therefore the complete launch of Arts Magazine’s website – where traditional written criticism and rich-media advertising space will appear – is postponed for the time being.

Arts Magazine is moving leaner and faster, focusing on video and social media exclusively. In the coming weeks, you will witness a new genre in art criticism emerge: reviews in video. We start with Beverly Fishman's recent exhibition at Miles McEnery Gallery and Pieter Schoolwerth's at Petzel.

Alongside these new developments in arts media, you will see the historical resources of Arts Magazine explored for present-day consideration, on video platforms and on Instagram. Our first topics will be the writings of Frank Bowling on the nature of "Black art," in October, 1970 – exactly fifty years ago – and Philip Guston's drawings, from the issue devoted to the artist's drawing retrospective at the MoMA, in November of 1988.

This newsletter will alert readers to videos as they are posted across Instagram, Youtube, and Vimeo.
