THIS SUNDAY AT EMMANUEL
OCTOBER 25, 2020

SERMON SERIES FOR SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER:
“The Beatitudes, Matthew 4:23-5:12”
This Sunday: The Beatitudes: Blessed Are the Voters - Rev. Stephanie Vader
9am Online Worship Service Live-Stream HERE
Click HERE to view or download this Sunday's bulletin!

The Beatitudes are praised in churches, mostly ignored in practice, and occasionally framed as gifts to be hung on the office wall of the minister’s office. The Beatitudes are Jesus’ description of an upside-down Kingdom, that He calls the Kingdom of God, where we live out God’s dream of compassion and justice. The Beatitudes turn the world's values upside down. What is true for those who live in the power of the Kingdom of God is a flat reversal of what is considered to be true in the culture at large. The Beatitudes declare that the poor, the meek, and the peacemakers are the ones who are truly blessed. We live in a world, however, that pronounces the benediction over the self-sufficient, the assertive, and the power brokers. The people whom the world would see as pitiful, as mournful, as persecuted, are the very people Jesus claims are blessed.

Also, we will be offering the added feature of weekly handouts that include activities and other extras for you to download at home here for the Family Page and here for the Activity Page. (Think of it as a sermon/worship service add-on.)

If you have Joys and/or Concerns, please email them to RevKim@EUMCLaurel.org or send them to her by text at 301-520-9219 by Wednesday evening of each week. Please make sure to give your name, and if you would like the information shared just with staff, with everyone on Sunday during our live streamed service (info will be shared on the screen during worship), and/or added to the Prayer List that is sent in this weekly E-News every Friday morning. You also may complete an online Joy/Concern card HERE.

 ALL SAINTS DAY

On All Saints Day, Sunday, November 1, we want to honor our loved ones who have died in the past year with a montage of photos. Please send a clear, JPEG photo of your loved one (along with their name, your name, your relationship, and the date of their death) to Becky at office@eumclaurel.org. The person honored does not need to be from EUMC -- but connected through you to our EUMC family. It seems especially important, since we can't be physically together right now to be sharing our grief and loss with one another.

It is our tradition to also celebrate new life on All Saints Day, so we will end our photo montage with pictures of babies born to EUMC members and friends.  Please send a JPEG photo of a new baby born to you or someone you love (along with their name, your name, your relationships, and the date of their birth) to Becky at office@eumclaurel.org.

The photos need to be emailed to Becky by October 24th so we have plenty of time to get the presentation ready. Thank you!

HELP THE EMMANUEL OFFICE!

Please help Emmanuel keep your information up-to-date!

We are very excited that Servant Keeper, the company we use to house our church family members' information, now allows you to update your own page!

If you have not received an email giving you access to your information, please contact Becky at office@EUMCLaurel.org, and she will send you the link.

Please create your secure account with your own password, then...
  • bookmark the page so you will have easy access
  • check to see if your basic contact information is correct
  • upload photos of your family and the individuals in your family
  • check some boxes to let us know how you can help Emmanuel!
You'll also be able to see your pledge to EUMC, and how much you have donated. (Please remember that the donation information is updated only a few times each quarter, so recent donations may not be visible right away!)

We will have an on-line church photo directory that you can access through your safe link to Servant Keeper. People will only be able to see the information that you allow! And only our church family will be able to access the directory, just as it is with the directory that the office creates, but now the information will always be up-to-date and at your fingertips!

Questions? Contact Becky at office@EUMCLaurel.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Emmanuel Staff is looking for one or two volunteers to coordinate a Red Cross Blood Drive at Emmanuel. Volunteers would contact Red Cross, coordinate with the church office to set a date, then set up a Sign Up Genius and advertise the event (with the office's help!). Volunteers would also be available the day of the blood drive for set up and break down, and recruit and coordinate other volunteers to assist.

If you are interested, please contact Becky at office@eumclaurel.org. THANK YOU!

Limited Worship Returns to the Sanctuary!

Sunday, October 25 and November 1 (All Saints Day) and 8
at 9:00 AM

Emmanuel has never stopped worshipping!
Every Sunday morning the worship service is recorded right in our Sanctuary!
You have an opportunity to witness what really happens behind the scenes!

Are you interested in attending a 9:00 worship service in a socially distant, mask wearing, no singing environment? If so, sign up by clicking the button below!

You must preregister to attend. You must tell us exactly how many will attend from your household.

Due to limited space, signing up does NOT mean you will be able to attend. A confirmation email with specific directions will be sent to those who may attend the service.

There will be safety protocols in place for anyone who attends!

This limited access to worship in the Sanctuary will continue until Sunday, November 8. After that date, we will not invite people to the worship space unless more people have signed up!

LAITY SESSION FOR B-W CONFERENCE

Registration Opens for Laity Session

A Time of Equipping and Celebrating for the

People of the Baltimore-Washington Conference

The Laity Session of Annual Conference will be held online Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon. This year's session is open to everyone -- all clergy and lay people. However, attendance will be limited to the first 1,000 people to register. We will livestream everything except the interactive dialogue which is why registration is required and limited.

A special feature of the event will be an immersive experience by Fear+less Dialogues, a grassroots organization committed to creating unique spaces for unlikely partners to engage in hard heartfelt conversations that see gifts in others, hear value in stories, and work for change and positive transformation in self and others. Participants will leave the session with renewed energy to value the strength and solidarity of an inclusive society that embraces all individuals.
In addition to the time of equipping, our gathering will include:
  • A time of worship and welcome from BWC Lay Leader Delores Martin;
  • An address to leaders of the Baltimore-Washington Conference by Bishop LaTrelle Easterling;
  • Honoring the BWC's 11 new Certified Lay Ministers;
  • Presentations of five awards to churches and individuals that honor outstanding discipleship. Learn more at  www.bwcumc.org/resources/grants-and-awards.
Young People's Voices Needed for the Laity Session: It is critical for the future of our churches to have young people engaged. Encourage your youth and young adults to lift their voices as participants in this year's virtual Laity Session. Young people have three opportunities to participate by recording themselves either reading scripture, singing "This Little Light of Mine," or finishing the prompt, "The church can keep the dream alive by... " Contact Cheryl Cook at ccook@bwcumc.org for more details.

A WEEKLY PRAYER

A weekly prayer for the Baltimore-Washington Conference from the Appointive Cabinet.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

Last week, the people of the Baltimore-Washington Conference began a 40-day journey of prayer and weekly fasting as they approach the Nov. 3 election and move through to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The spiritual discipline of fasting has been a practice of many faith traditions for centuries. Fasting from food can serve as a physical reminder to pray, and perhaps to pray more fervently.

Each Tuesday, United Methodists are invited by Bishop LaTrelle Easterling and the Extended Cabinet to fast from rising up until settling down. Every day, they are being asked to enter into the offices of prayer, beginning the day with Wesley’s Covenant Prayer, saying the Lord’s Prayer at mid-day, and ending the day with the Prayer of St. Francis.

More information and the three daily prayers are on the BWC website.

 LGBTQIA+ AWARENESS IN OCTOBER

As a reconciling congregation, Emmanuel UMC is committed to welcoming and affirming LGBTQIA+ people.

October 11th is National Coming Out Day. Coming out STILL MATTERS. God gives courage and strength to do this, whether in small ways or through breaking down the closet doors. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

 DISABILITY AWARENESS IN OCTOBER

All people are welcome to Emmanuel UMC. We continue to offer a special welcome to people with disabilities.

October rolls in National Disability Employment Awareness Month. It’s a time to highlight the accomplishments of persons with disabilities, to appreciate the importance of hiring persons with disabilities, and emphasize education and training. One way this translates to the church is to recognize their leadership and service potential.

ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT

The Bible teaches us to pray in every situation. Emmanuel’s Prayer Ministry group invites you to their weekly prayer conference call. Every Wednesday from 7:30pm to 8pm you can join the call. We start with a prayer, scripture reading, and devotion. Then the line is open for anyone to pray for joys or concerns.

For more information, or to join the Prayer Line, click HERE.

WE ARE EMMANUEL

Emmanuel UMC embraces Jesus’ message that God loves everyone and we affirm that all persons are of sacred worth. We believe that every human being is created and gifted by God; therefore every human being is invited to be part of our church.

We welcome into our fellowship, membership, and leadership, all people, regardless of age, economic reality, education, ethnicity, faith history, family structure, gender identity, nationality, disability, race, sexual orientation, and life experience.
