Countdown to Election Day

If you haven't voted yet, you have time. If you're a registered voter, you should have received a ballot in the mail. (DC elections officials have told Council member Mary Cheh that if you haven't received one as of October 21st, you should plan on voting in person.) In-person voting begins on October 27th, and if you are not registered, not to worry. DC has same-day voter registration.

In any case, we're here to help you with your homework with our voter guide and information about the people running for ANC 3F

Changes are coming

A couple of planning documents dropped late last week: the draft UDC Campus Master Plan for 2021-2030, and an updated environmental assessment of DDOT's proposed Broad Branch Road reconstruction project.

The UDC campus plan is an important document for the Van Ness commercial area, which needs the vibrancy that a lively and growing student body, activation of the university campus and cultural arts spaces, and leased retail properties would bring. Unlike the previous campus plan, which projected student enrollment of 6,000 by 2020, there are no projections for student growth upon which to base improvements to its campus buildings and development of additional sites.

The Broad Branch update is the first sign of progress since the release of the last one in 2013. So what has DDOT been doing for the past seven years? Negotiating with Italy and other sovereign nations that own property along the road. Widening the roadway to accommodate both a bike lane and a sidewalk would encroach on their properties. The updated EA states a clear preference for the alternative that adds only a sidewalk to one side of the road - and does not encroach on sovereign property.

We're in the process of digging into both documents - we'll be posting articles about them by the next newsletter. In the meantime, we invite you to dig in. ANC 3F, which will be hearing from UDC at its public meeting tonight, has posted the draft campus master plan (minus exhibits) to its web site. And you'll find the Broad Branch EA and assorted appendices here

Escapes

Yes, the trees put on quite a show every fall. But there's more delights in nature to look for, too.
... And you can bring some of those delights indoors.

From the archives:

What we were talking about in October 2013

How street trees can grow to be healthy and strong (hint: lots of leg room). Noise complaints prompted by a backyard wedding. And the neighborhood was eagerly awaiting Little Red Fox's arrival (it happened in late November).
