A LETTER FROM THE EUROPEAN CHAPTER PRESIDENT, PAUL DANKS.

19th October 2020

A LETTER FROM PAUL DANKS
FRICS SIOR
President, SIOR European Regional Chapter

Dear <<First Name>>,

Under different circumstances, I would have written this newsletter in anticipation of experiencing the delights of the New England fall, having formally taken over presidency of the European Regional Chapter at the SIOR Global CREate 360 conference in Boston, MA. Sadly, in-person attendance will not be possible this year.

Despite the noise regarding the US elections, the number of new virus cases and the associated impact on economies across the world, together with increasing geopolitical tensions, life of course goes on. In this respect I am proud of how members of SIOR across the world and in particular across Europe have risen to the challenges before us.  Whilst working remotely, finding innovative ways to support our clients and our colleagues. As I move forward in my role I want to share with you some updates on SIOR programmes and activities.

BOARD UPDATE
Firstly I would like to thank Paul McDowell for his leadership of our Chapter over the last two years. In particular, I am pleased that Paul has agreed to continue to chair our Dublin 2021 Conference Committee. I know you will all provide Paul and our onference committee with your full support as planning continues over the coming months. We are about to relaunch a soft promotion of the conference by way of a follow-up “You Too” video. Our own rock band has reformed and has filmed a one-off exclusive lockdown concert for our members. Click here to enjoy it now.
Over the course of this year your SIOR Europe Board of Directors has remained engaged through regular meetings and communication. In particular, over the last three months, I have worked closely with the European Executive Committee to review our strategy and develop an "Action Plan" that sets out our goals and the key actions that we might take in order to achieve those goals and drive forward the influence of our association in Europe over the next two years and beyond. You can view our Action Plan here.

Moving forward to implementation, last week we announced the new European Board and we also issued a press release announcing my appointment

I feel it is worth repeating here SIOR's Mission, Vision and ideal future state as defined by SIOR as:-
  • SIOR Mission  To inspire the industrial and office real estate industry by connecting people, knowledge, markets, and opportunities, globally.
  • SIOR Vision  The SIOR professional designation recognised as the standard of excellence in industrial and office real estate.
  • Ideal future state (2020-2022) Perceived as the premier office and industrial real estate association sought out by the top/leading industry professionals, while at the same time being highly attractive to the next generation.
Whilst we have much to do to achieve our goals, it is critical that we all work together collectively as a team and are supportive of each other.

PROGRESS UPDATE
Having produced an European Regional Chapter "Action Plan" we now need to work together as a European Team to ensure successful delivery. In this respect, working with the Board I am in the process of assigning responsibility for the delivery of each of our goals, which will include co-opting several new Board members.  Progress made to-date includes:-

Diversity & Inclusion.
I am pleased that RENATA OSIECKA has agreed to form and chair a new Board Committee which will focus on Diversity & Inclusion in the real estate community recruiting and working with members with different experiences and perspectives. Renata will collaborate with other like-minded organisations, such as CREW Network, to create an inclusive platform and start a dialogue to progress diversity and inclusiveness in the industry and ultimately achieve benefits for all in the business. Renata will be in touch with you all shortly to outline her plans and enlist your support.

Young Professionals
I am pleased that PAUL PRIDE has agreed to form and chair a new Board Committee which will focus on recruiting and the needs of Young Professionals in particular. It is critical that we broaden our reach across Europe and that in particular we engage and offer support to a younger audience. Working together with the SIOR Foundation and other  external organisations we will  develop programmes that are relevant to our younger audience. Paul will be in touch with you all shortly  to outline his initial plans and enlist your support.

Sponsorship & Finance
ANDY SMITH has agreed that in addition to his current role as Treasurer, he will also form and chair a European  Sponsorship Committee. Working in close collaboration with Iain Finnegan who has the important, continuing role of driving forward the Dublin 2021 Conference Sponsorship programme, Andy will be connecting with each of you seeking your support in securing Europe wide key sponsors. We will also be seeking the formal appointment at our next AGM of a Deputy Treasurer to allow Andy and his team to focus on securing key sponsors for the European Chapter.

Deal Generation
Whilst we each obtain "value" from our membership of SIOR in many different ways, your Board recognises that it is essential to each and every one of us that we obtain direct financial benefit, DEALS! In this respect, working together with Matthew in particular, I have personally made it my mission to ensure that we take "whatever action is necessary" to generate more deals across our network. To achieve this, we will need your full collaboration and support. Our first action will be to establish a base understanding of the scale of the opportunity that is there for us to mine. More news on this in the coming weeks.
Marketing & PR
JAMES MULHALL has kindly agreed to re-form, re-focus and continue to chair our Marketing & PR Committee. Moving forward Iain Rackley has already joined him on the task. James will be contacting you to explain where your support and contribution will be valued and to ensure that we broaden the Europe-wide reach of both the Committee, the actions we take and internal & external support we need. Our intention is to take a much more focused "rifle shot " approach moving forward, particularly emphasising the expertise and market knowledge we have across Europe. In particular, our intent is to utilise digital and social media platforms much more intensively: @siorglobal @sioreurope. Above all we need to ensure that with a limited budget we get true value for any money we spend.

Autumnal Chapter News and Events
Matthew recently circulated Autumnal News and Events for the Chapter. We are developing an exciting programme  over the next 12 months. More news on this over the coming weeks. In the meantime, at the reduced delegate rate of $250, please do not forget to register for CREate 360. As announced last week, the first ten European members can receive a further $100 subsidy, taking the delegate rate down to ONLY $150. Email your conference registration confirmation to matthew@sioreurope.com

Finally, on behalf of the Board I would like to thank each of you for your continued support. Please feel free to contact me with any feedback, questions or suggestions.
