Fridays for Future Calgary Newsletter - October 18

Welcome to the Fridays For Future Calgary Newsletter! Our newsletter is sent bi-weekly and includes updates from our group, climate and environmental news and ways to take action! If you enjoy this newsletter, tell your friends and family to sign up too!

What We've Been Up To

The last few weeks have been pretty mellow for the team here at Fridays for Future Calgary. We’ve been resting and recuperating and continuing to plan in-person actions and other exciting projects!

There have also been small but lively groups out at City Hall these past Fridays, demanding climate action from our governments. Please join them if you can!

Upcoming Events

  • West Hillhurst Digital Climate Conversation: Thursday, October 22nd 7-9pm
Tune in to Calgary Climate Hub's Community Zoomcast from your own cozy space and engage in *real* conversations with their host of climate experts on topics like renewable energy, permaculture and building climate resilience (and pandemic resilience!) into your community.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP here.

  • Extinction Rebellion Calgary will be hosting an Anti-Coal rally at Mcdougall centre to protest the UCP’s decision to re-open Alberta to new, destructive coal mining on the eastern slopes of the Rockies, on Tuesday, October 27th at 11:30 am. Click Here to RSVP.

We’ve returned to weekly striking! We’ll be at City Hall from 12-1 every Friday like we did before the pandemic, but with a few additional safety measures:

  • We require all participants to wear masks for the entire strike and strongly encourage social distancing.
  • If you have been in contact with anyone with a confirmed or suspected case of Covid-19, or have experienced symptoms yourself in the past 14 days, stay home.
  • If you test positive or suspect that you have Covid-19, and have attended one of our strikes in the past 14 days, please inform us, you can stay anonymous, through email or social media (links at the bottom of this email).
  • If we hear of a case of Covid-19 amongst our strikers, we will suspend all in-person strikes for the next 14 days and will attempt to notify all who have striked with us recently, through social media and our email list. We will also provide hand sanitizer for you to use while at our strikes.

News

Tensions between Mi'kmaq harvesters and non-indigenous commercial fishers on the southwestern shore have been escalating resulting in two frightening acts of vandalism. Indigenous leaders are condemning the actions as racist hate crimes and the RCMP has failed to arrest and charge those involved in this attack.
