NEWS
Meet our new interns!

We want to welcome and introduce our new Zilkha Center Interns! Read more about each of them and their excitement on our website, and follow our instagram to find out what kind of plant each of them would want to be!

Waste Updates
Below are some updates to stay sustainable with the new dining changes! Read more in-depth information here and request a reusable bag here.
A Small Acorn

As you keep enjoying fall and going for walks and bike rides around campus or in your communities in safe ways, consider listening to former ZC director Amy John’s podcast she has created with her son.

Works in Progress
Want to keep up with what the Zilkha Center is advocating for and working on and a few ideas of how to incorporate sustainability into your work? A section on Works in Progress is up on our website to share some of the work of summer intern Hugo Hua '22.
Parsons Garden

This summer, Professor Pallavi Sen oversaw the Parsons garden and grew an abundance of vegetables, herbs and flowers to share with the nearby food pantry (and of course some insects and groundhogs too). Watch the video below for a tour of the plants and some of her thoughts on growing a garden for the first time. Video by summer intern Aniah Price ’22.5.

Community Climate Fund
In 2017, the college began exploring ways to integrate local projects into the school emission goals of reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. A writeup of our progress from last spring is up on our website written by intern Austin Huang ‘22.

Why Williams-Mystic?
Saturday, October 24, 4:30 pm EST
There are multiple reasons why a student may choose to spend a semester at Williams-Mystic. Some come to the program with a desire to learn more about our oceans and coasts while others are interested in that topic but also want to dive deeper into what it means to build a community with the help of interdisciplinary education. On October 24, the Williams-Mystic student ambassadors are going to share their Williams-Mystic stories with the Williams College student community. Come learn about how these students made the decision to attend Williams-Mystic and how it enhanced their Williams College experience. Register here.
Broadening Voices in Environmental Justice: Reconceptualizing Quantitative Approaches
Thursday, October 22, 4:00 p.m. EST
In their article “A quantitative systematic review of distributive environmental justice literature: a rich history and the need for an enterprising future,” Glenn Althor and Bradd Witt quantify the biases and scopes of environmental justice literature and find that “some of the world’s most polluted and inequitable societies are least represented in authorship.” This presentation will discuss methods we are exploring at the Global Environmental Justice Project to include marginalized voices rooted in the Environmental Justice Movement, in new forms of authorship. These forms of authorship range from expanding Western notions of quantitative data in West Africa to developing new approaches to data literacy in the U.S. Register here.
