October Newsletter
Welcome to the Edible Edinburgh newsletter. Edible Edinburgh is a cross-sector, city-wide partnership that aims to inspire and motivate everyone across Edinburgh to work together to build new approaches to food.
Our vision: Edinburgh is a city where good food is available and accessible for all, making for healthy people, thriving communities and a sustainable environment.
Edinburgh's World Food Day Festival
To celebrate this year's United Nations World Food Day Edible Edinburgh teamed up with the Soil Association Scotland to bring you Edinburgh's World Food Day Festival on Friday 16th October. The virtual event celebrated and showcased activity around good food in Edinburgh, throughout Scotland and beyond, including live cook-alongs, film showings and webinars. Thank you to everyone that hosted and participated in any of the events featured as part of Edinburgh's World Food Day Festival. If you missed it, you can listen to all of the recordings from the week-long national Veg Fest webinars here, featuring Edinburgh Community Food.
New Edible Edinburgh Working Groups - Join Us!
Edible Edinburgh has recently established three new working groups; Health, Economy and Sustainability. These new working groups will support the food environment in the city, including supporting the refresh of Edinburgh's Sustainable Food City Plan. It also marks the start of Edinburgh’s journey to achieving the Sustainable Food Places Silver Award. If you would like to find out more about each group, or have suggestions of organisations who may be interested in attending and contributing towards promoting sustainable food in Edinburgh, please get in touch. hello@edible-edin.org.
Discover! - Holiday Programme for Families
Our partners at Edinburgh Community Food delivered a variety of fun-filled cooking sessions with families during the October half term holiday, in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council-led Discover! programme. The programme of activities and cooking were based around the theme of Autumn.  Families received arts and crafts, active schools equipment and ingredients to make delicious recipes with extra food to help feed families over the week. Families also received the latest activity and recipe book from the Veg Power campaign, Eat Them To Defeat Them. Veg Power is on mission to get every child in the UK eating one more portion of veg each day. You can read the blog from Edinburgh Community Food here.
Edinburgh Food Social - Great Garden Gather
Edinburgh Food Social is passionate about local, seasonal food and this time of year is one of the best for seasonal ingredients! Do you have an apple tree at the bottom of your garden, a plum tree or even some beetroot to dig up? This year, we are asking our friends and followers to consider dropping any gathered foods into our little kitchen, where we will make cordials, jams, jellies and chutneys. To say thank you, pop by later in the season and take your pick from some of the things that we have made. We hope that you will be able to help us with the Great Garden Gather, anytime over the next couple of weeks!
Become a Veg Advocate
Do you want to make it easier for people in your community to eat enough vegetables? If you are interested, join one of the free Zoom workshops to find out more about Peas Please and the Veg Advocate programme.  Talk about your experiences of food to find new ways we can change things for the better and receive a £10 voucher for participating. Peas Please are looking for people from diverse backgrounds so feel free to send to your networks. Choose a date and register for a workshop here.
