ISAPP Newsletter – October 19, 2020

This October brings new opportunities to participate in virtual educational events! Below you can read about a recent webinar presented by ISAPP and ILSI Europe on probiotic and prebiotic mechanisms of action -- and you can also find the YouTube link if you'd like to watch the entire presentation.

We also present some updates from ISAPP board members this month: read a blog post by Prof. Sarah Lebeer on a unique citizen science project concerning lactobacilli and women’s health; learn about a new Spanish e-book on the topic of fermented foods, co-edited by Dr. Gabriel Vinderola; and celebrate with Prof. Colin Hill as he receives a prestigious award from University College Cork for his remarkable career and achievements in microbiology.

Finally, check out a unique funding opportunity from ILSI North America -- support for innovative projects that examine the scientific links between live dietary microbes and health outcomes.

Current status of research on probiotic and prebiotic mechanisms of action

Probiotic and prebiotic mechanisms of action are highly complex, but mechanistic insights are key to better probiotic selection and the development of therapeutic approaches. In this blog post, get an overview of the mechanistic research to date -- and find the link to a recorded webinar by ISAPP & ILSI Europe on this topic, featuring a rich Q&A session.

Citizen scientists step up for a research project on women’s health

In this post, Prof. Sarah Lebeer describes her research project exploring novel aspects about the ecology and evolutionary history of lactobacilli, with the ultimate goal of improving women's health. An ambitious citizen science component of the project focused on vaginal lactobacilli, with over 4000 women stepping up to provide samples for analysis.

New Spanish e-book about fermented foods now available for download

Fermented foods and beverages such as yogurt, kefir, kombucha, kimchi, and miso are more popular than ever, but few resources cover their scientific side. Read here about a new Spanish e-book co-edited by ISAPP board member Dr. Gabriel Vinderola, along with Ricardo Weill and Alejandro Ferrari, called Fermented Foods: microbiology, nutrition, health and culture. See the ISAPP press releases about the book in English and en español.

ISAPP board member and former president Prof Colin Hill

ISAPP board member Prof. Colin Hill receives Career Achievement Research Award from University College Cork

Longtime ISAPP board member and former president, Prof. Colin Hill, has been honored with a prestigious Irish award: The UCC Career Achievement Research Award. This blog post tells about his remarkable work, including landmark studies on bacteriocins and the human virome.

Opportunity for research grants to help understand evidence linking live dietary microbes and health

Researchers still have time to apply for a grant of $100-150K from ILSI North America, for projects that examine the evidence linking live dietary microbes and health outcomes. Find out more about this funding opportunity and how ISAPP supports these efforts.
