Message from the Mayor, Cllr Alexander Curtis

We know that many of you have been very concerned about the lack of banking facilities in our Town.  We have been talking to the Post Office to encourage them to share with us exactly what it is they are able to offer our community - more on this later on in the newsletter.

I'm pleased to say that at our Full Council meeting earlier this week it was agreed that we will undertake a major revamp of Ware Skate Park.  It is expected the work will begin early in 2021.

We also agreed the plans to light up our town this Christmas - hopefully bringing us all a little cheer during these difficult times and encourage people to come into the town and shop at some of our wonderful independent stores.  It will be more important than ever this year to support our local businesses and #ShopLocal.

As you will see further on in this publication, Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day has had a makeover to ensure we can pay tribute safely and with dignity.  I urge you all to join the 2 minute silence across the town on November 11th at 11am.  As so eloquently put by Rev. Pentalow, 'this year the War Memorial will come into peoples homes, schools and places of work'.

As always, if there is anything you would like to bring to my attention I can be contacted via the Town Council office on 01920 460316 or info@waretowncouncil.gov.uk.

Stay safe.

Cllr Alexander Curtis
Town Mayor

Paying tribute on Remembrance Sunday & Armistice Day

While our usual Remembrance Sunday activities cannot take place under current circumstances, Ware Town Council has been working with Ware Branch Royal British Legion and Ware Churches to plan a way in which the Town can pay tribute with dignity and in safety.

There will be no parade this year on November 8th.  The Royal British Legion has stated that Parades may not take place and many of the uniformed Youth Organisations have been informed that they may not take part in parades.

Our Churches will be at the heart of our Remembrance this year and Services across four Churches; St. Mary The Virgin, Sacred Heart of Jesus & St. Joseph, Christ Church and Leaside are planned to take place simultaneously. Church Services are subject to strict limits on numbers and the Churches will liaise in order that these numbers aren’t breached.  The congregations will disperse once the service is over.

There will be no formal wreath laying ceremony.  Instead, local groups who usually lay wreaths will be given allotted time slots to go along and lay their wreath in a safe fashion.  They will all be contacted shortly.  We ask that members of the public who wish to lay their own wreath take great care to abide by social distancing rules.

On November 11th the gathering at the War Memorial will not take place. Instead we are asking the entire town to fall silent at 11am on 11th November to pay tribute in this way.  The bells at St. Mary’s will toll at 11am to signify that we should all stop and reflect.   A  poignant way to bring the whole town together.

Unfortunately, the site start date for Victoria Cut footbridge works has been delayed by a couple of weeks but they are making every endeavour to start the construction works as early as possible.

We will update you as soon as we hear more.

Banking Services at the Post Office

Our Town Centre Manager, Sarah, has been in discussions with the Post Office and they have provided us with documents which layout the banking services they offer to both business and personal customers.  You can view those documents at www.waretowncouncil.gov.uk/news

We usually have two Post Office branches in Ware - the branch in the High Street and at Kingshill.  Unfortunately just recently there was an issue with the ceiling in the High Street branch which has meant the branch has had to close temporarily whilst work is carried out.

The Post Office have been in touch today and tell us:

We are waiting for McColls to confirm the latest situation at Ware Post Office and will update you when we know more. McColls also run the Kingshill branch, which is in the process of transferring to another retailer who plans to take on the Post Office as well. I’m just confirming the dates for this and again will come back to you once I have more information. We do have mobile Post Offices throughout the UK but I’m not aware of any locally that could offer a temporary service but will double check this.”

Play your part, Stay safe and have a Spooktacular Halloween

We know that Autumn is a favourite time for many, whether you dress up for Halloween or have friends around for a bonfire, coronavirus means that things will be a little different for everyone this year.

That’s why this year Hertfordshire County Council is urging you to play your part and help protect your loved ones and your community. There’s lots of fun, safe activities that you can plan from  pumpkin carving, having a Halloween themed scavenger hunt at home or going on a ‘spot the pumpkin’ trail with members of your household, think about protecting yourselves and those around you and always follow government guidance.

Many traditional Halloween activities can be high-risk for spreading coronavirus, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun!

Here are the top 5 low risk activites:

Carving or decorating pumpkins with members of your household and displaying them in your window, or outside. There are lots of videos available online to help you.

Taking part in a local ‘spot the pumpkin’ trail throughout half term week, where people display pumpkin or Halloween pictures in their windows and you have to try and find them all with your family

Organising a Halloween scavenger hunt, where children from your household are given lists of Halloween-themed things to look for either in your home, or outdoors
Having a virtual Halloween costume competition using zoom or Skype
Having a Halloween film night with your household

Three higher risk activities to avoid this Halloween:

Participating in traditional trick-or-treating, where treats are handed to children who go door to door
Attending crowded fancy dress parties or any party where there are more than six people
Going to an indoor haunted house where people may be crowded together and screaming

Whatever you decide, stay safe and enjoy!

Christmas Together in Ware

As many of you will know, for many years now a fantastic team of volunteers have come together to provide a Christmas lunch, laughter and companionship to those alone at Christmas.  This usually takes place at Riverside Hall.  Obviously, the team will be unable to deliver this in 2020.

Instead, the Christmas Together team have come up with the idea of delivering goody bags on Christmas Day to those alone and stopping on the doorstep, suitably socially distanced, for a chat so that those alone will at least know they will speak to someone on this special day.

The group are looking for drivers to help them out on the day.  In addition, there won't be the usual pick up points in the town for those who require the service.

So, if you are able to help, or if you would like to be considered for a visit from the team, please contact Pat or Zara Kimber; 01920 420642 or by email on pat.kimber@ntlworld.com.
