Creating Active Schools updates

Zoom Workshops

It was fantastic to see so many of you at our 2020-21 introductory workshops for schools last week.  Our next two Zoom workshops (agendas and Zoom details will be sent out a week in advance) are scheduled for:

  • Monday 9th November - 4-5pm

  • Thursday 3rd December - 4-5pm

Part of these meetings will focus on CPD in relation to the Creating Active Schools framework, so if there is a specific aspect you would like us to cover then please email me directly.

Profile Toolkit

Last Friday, we sent you the toolkit and supporting guidance notes in order to begin the completion of your Creating Active Schools Profiles.  If you have not already done so, please email me to confirm a date and time that I can support you with thisThe deadline for completion is 26th November 2020, and once we have all the profiles returned we will be able to start planning “shared solutions” to support schools in the Spring and Summer term

"COVID" Specific Solutions

It was clear from discussions with many of you during the workshops that there is a real appetite for solutions that support staff in delivering physical activity and play opportunities in either:

  1. inclement weather, or

  2. in classroom/limited indoor space.

We are keen to develop ideas on this further with possible solutions outlined in more detail at our next meeting in November.  If you have any specific thoughts on this or would like to be involved in developing these ideas then please let me know.

JU:MP updates

JU:MP to School

For those able to start JU:MP to School, we hope that the children are enjoying using the pedometers and the active travel challenges in place.  We’d love to hear from you about how the challenge is going and if you have any queries or need further support please contact Ian Cullen or Emily Groves (see contact details below).

Research for JU:MP at Home

Our researcher Amanda Seims would like to speak to children (Yrs 4-6) about how they spend their time at home and what they think to our JU:MP@Home resource. She is looking for schools who could assist with holding some small focus groups in the next couple of months (either in person or over zoom). She would also like children to complete some surveys. If you are able to assist, please contact her at amanda.seims@bthft.nhs.uk / 07857 671014 by Friday 30th October.

Signposting and wider opportunities

Half Term opportunities

As we approach half term, here are a couple of links to promote with your families for ways to stay active:

https://www.bradfordcityruns.co.uk/ - which includes a 1 mile under 11 “virtual” run anytime between 24th October and 1st November, with children taking part receiving their own running vest and medal for their £4 entry fee.

www.jumpathome.org - please continue to promote this resource to your families as they will also receive a free play pack on signing up.

The Love Exploring app is live in Lister Park and Peel Park where families can discover all parts of the park, searching for augmented reality zombies, mummies and skeletons in the half-term Halloween edition!  https://loveexploring.page.link/download

Yorkshire Sport Conference

Please note that Yorkshire Sport are running their annual PE and School Sport conference virtually this year on Monday 16th November with key notes from Sue Wilkinson (AFPE) and Jason Robinson OBE (Rugby World Cup Winner).  See http://bit.ly/WY_PE_2020 for further details.

And finally please find detailed below a summary of your JU:MP team should you need to contact us.  We appreciate that wellbeing of your staff (including your own) is both a priority and concern in these challenging times, and if there is anything we can do to support you and your staff in relation to wider wellbeing beyond physical activity, then please do get in touch.

Hoping you all have a restful and very well deserved half term break when you get there.

With my very best wishes

Ian Holmes
