Friends of MICD,

Today, we’re thrilled to launch the latest program in our suite of virtual offerings for 2020: MICD Alumni Technical Assistance. We'll be matching each selected mayor with two Resource Team members, giving alumni mayors highly personalized consultation on a project of their choosing. We've long been searching for new ways to support our MICD alumni, and we hope this type of connection will be especially useful while in-person assistance remains limited.

We're looking for two types of projects: a direct continuation of your MICD case study project, OR a new project related to racial justice and/or COVID-19 recovery in the built environment. Within those categories, there are few limitations — we're excited to see what you propose and what projects you think would benefit from a short-term, highly targeted consultation process (via Zoom, of course).

Mayors, we encourage you to submit the 5-minute application below. We'll start reviewing them and making matches very soon. And Resource Team — we need you too! More info about compensation and an interest form are below. Please reach out with any questions or comments: trinity@micd.org.

MICD Alumni Technical Assistance: Matching mayors and design experts

Applications reviewed on a rolling basis starting October 30

To help mayors as they address the complex challenges facing today’s cities, MICD is pleased to announce a new program to offer technical assistance to MICD alumni mayors. MICD Alumni Technical Assistance will match selected mayors with a pair of nationally renowned design experts who will advise each mayor on their selected city design challenge.

Each mayor selected for this new program will receive advice on either:

  1. A next iteration of the city design case study the mayor brought to a previous MICD session; or
  2. A new opportunity tied to COVID-19 recovery and/or racial justice in the built environment.

Two MICD Resource Team alumni will be matched with each selected mayor to develop recommendations on their project. Over a six-week period, mayors will participate in a virtual launch meeting, the Resource Team will work with stakeholders to develop recommendations, and the mayor will join a virtual meeting to discuss the recommendations.

There is no cost to participating mayors or cities; participation in this program is very limited. MICD will compensate the Resource Team directly for their time (estimated at 15-20 hours of consultation).

MICD alumni mayors are invited to apply for this new program at micd.org/ATA. Once you have a project in mind, the application should only take 5 minutes to complete.

Resource Team alumni: Here's how to get involved.

Resource Team alumni are invited to indicate their interest in participating in the new MICD Alumni Technical Assistance program. MICD will match mayors to two design professionals based on compatibility with the proposed topics.

As a Resource Team member, your duties will include:
  • Participating in a 60-minute scoping call with the mayor;
  • Collaborating with your fellow Resource Team member to develop recommendations on the project;
  • Leading up to four 30-minute stakeholder interviews;
  • Networking with other Resource Teams who are concurrently advising other mayors and cities; and
  • Presenting your observations and recommendations back to the mayor in a 90-minute call, approximately 6 weeks after the kick-off call.
The total time commitment is anticipated to be around 15-20 hours over approximately six weeks. Mayors and Resource Team members will be paired on a rolling basis beginning October 30, with the first projects expected to take place in November and December 2020.

Each Resource Team member will receive an honorarium of $5,000 upon the conclusion of the city engagement.
