The ISU Rec Services Program is something you can't miss

...because Battleship H2O is a real thing and I've seen it with my own eyes

You pay a lot of money in fees to Iowa State, and one of the things that money pays for is stellar recreation services facilities and programs, and one of the largest and best intramural sports programs in the nation. Intramural sports are a way to hang with your friends or make new ones, earn envied t-shirts, and crush the competition. Intramurals are also a great way to stay active and to take your mind off classes, projects, and exams. Finally, don't forget about Outdoor Rec and group fitness classes for everything from biking and canoeing (and things like backpacking in Arkansas over Thanksgiving break in a "normal" semester) to barre and Bachelorette Cycle here on campus.

The variety of intramural sports options is pretty staggering: there's the "traditional" sports (basektball, volleyball, soccer, hockey), to card games (euchre, Texas Hold'em, hearts), to throwbacks from elementary school gym class (badminton, pickleball, dodgeball), to the completely random (curling, Battleship H2O, NCAA march madness brackets). If you think you need to be a world-class athlete to do well at intramurals, you've never witnessed students bailing water into/out of canoes in the pool in State Gym. Broomball is such an Iowa State Thing that If you don't play it at least once before you graduate, we're skeptical they'll let you graduate from this august institution. The link to the complete listing and schedules of intramurals is below. Whatever your interest or skill level, give intramurals a try!

Advice from an Honors Ambassador:

Sara Smiley, senior in Architecture
If you feel cooped up in your dorm/apartment/place of residence and have only gotten off the couch to grab more snacks to eat during your pre-recorded lectures, joining an intramural would be a good idea! Intramurals are a great way to exercise, de-stress, bond with others, and try new sports. Some sports offer multiple leagues with varying skill levels, so you can play in the non-competitive “fun league” like me. Some of my favorites have been sand-volleyball and ice hockey. This semester I’m excited to try curling! Check out all the sports here
Recreation Services offers the Outdoor Recreation Program (ORP), which has fun and affordable workshops and trips. During spring break of 2019, I went to Labyrinth Canyon, Utah with 11 other ISU students and canoed 45 miles!  We camped out on the river under the stars, prepared all our meals, and created many party barges by linking our canoes together. I saw gorgeous scenery and got to explore the backcountry. The best part was bonding with the other students. After a week of little cell service and few showers, we all got to know each other very well and strangers became friends. ORP supplies all the gear and trip leaders, so whether you’re a seasoned traveler or new to camping, this experience is for you! Check out upcoming trips here.
