Food Safety Tips for the Holidays

Follow these simple tips to help prevent food poisoning, or foodborne illness, during the holidays.
  • Cook food thoroughly. Meat, chicken, turkey, seafood, and eggs can carry germs that cause food poisoning. Use a food thermometer to ensure these foods have been cooked to a safe internal temperature. Roasts, chops, steaks, and fresh ham should rest for 3 minutes after you remove them from the oven or grill.
  • Keep food out of the “danger zone.”  Bacteria can grow rapidly in the danger zone between 40°F and 140°F. After food is cooked, keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Refrigerate or freeze any perishable food within 2 hours. The temperature in your refrigerator should be set at or below 40°F and the freezer at or below 0°F.
  • Use pasteurized eggs for dishes containing raw eggsSalmonella and other harmful germs can live on both the outside and inside of normal-looking eggs. Many holiday favorites contain raw eggs, including eggnog, tiramisu, hollandaise sauce, and Caesar dressing. Always use pasteurized eggs when making these and other foods made with raw eggs.
Do not eat raw dough or batter. Dough and batter made with flour or eggs can contain harmful germs, such as E. coli and Salmonella. Do not taste or eat raw dough or batter that is meant to be baked or cooked.

"Danger Zone" (40 °F - 140 °F)
Leaving food out too long at room temperature can cause bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureusSalmonella Enteritidis, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Campylobacter) to grow to dangerous levels that can cause illness. Bacteria grow most rapidly in the range of temperatures between 40 °F and 140 °F, doubling in number in as little as 20 minutes. This range of temperatures is often called the "Danger Zone."

Virus Spread Risk at Holiday Celebrations
Celebrating virtually or with members of your own household poses low risk for spread. In-person gatherings pose varying levels of risk. Event organizers and attendees should consider the risk of virus spread based on event size and use of mitigation strategies, as outlined in the Considerations for Events and Gatherings. There are several factors that contribute to the risk of getting infected or infecting others with the virus that causes COVID-19 at a holiday celebration. In combination, these factors will create various amounts of risk, so it is important to consider them individually and together. Learn More

Reverse Holiday Parade | City Island | November 21 | 10 am - 12 pm

Join the City of Harrisburg and TMobile for the annual Holiday Parade with a new twist! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the parade will be modified to a reverse parade held on City Island. In a reverse parade, the parade entrants are stationary and spectators drive by in their vehicles rather than gathering in large groups along the street. After driving through the parade route, spectators will receive complimentary goodie bags filled with candy and other items (limited to first 150 cars). You will not be able to drive the parade route if you arrive after 12pm, so please arrive early.

This year’s parade theme is “Hometown Holiday” – show us what makes holidays in the Harrisburg area special to you! A “Best in Theme” award ($100 Amazon gift card) will be presented to the entry that receives the highest score from our panel of local celebrity judges. We also encourage spectators to get in the holiday spirit by decorating their vehicles (just be sure you can travel safely with any decorations you use).

Visit our website or Facebook event for continuous updates and details.

City Offers Assistance with Dead or Dangerous Street Trees
Recognizing that tree care can be costly, this fall for a limited time, the City is offering STREET TREE removal and pruning assistance to low-income property owners. The primary purpose of the program is to address street trees that pose an imminent threat to public safety.
Details can be found on our Trees page under the "Financial Assistance" Tab
New Street Trees for use in Camp Curtin
On November 13-16, community volunteers and Camp Curtin property owners will be planting 30 new street trees in that neighborhood. In September, residents were offered the opportunity to receive a new street tree at no charge, with funding provided to the City through a grant from Covenant Community Corporation.  A contractor will be cutting openings in the concrete at nine locations where no space for planting a tree was previously available. The remaining trees will be planted in an existing tree pit or grassy strip between the sidewalk and the curb.

Each planting location was carefully assessed to determine site limitations and tree species suitable for each address were selected.

Residents are asked to help plant if they are able. If successful, the hope is that similar plantings can be organized in other neighborhoods throughout the city. For further information, contact the City Forester, Ellen Roane at earoane@harrisburgpa.gov.
