What you need to know to stay safe & have fun this Fall...
Autumn is definitely here in Clear Creek County. Unfortunately, persistent drought conditions and limited firefighting resources due to massive fires burning in our state are leading to Stage 3 Fire Restrictions that will go into effect at midnight tonight. More info in the next newsletter section below.

For the ongoing safety of our community, we must find ways to keep entertained while at home. We have a list of fun Boredom Busters for the whole family, along with ideas for celebrating Halloween during a pandemic.

ALERT – STAGE 3 FIRE BAN TO BE IMPLEMENTED AT MIDNIGHT

Stage 3 Fire Ban in Clear Creek County effective at 12am on 10/21/20.

This means the public is NOT allowed to enter the boundaries of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests due to the worsening conditions and wildfire danger.

Top Tips to Prepare for Fire:
•Rake 5 feet out from your house and remove anything flammable in this area.
•Clean out gutters and roof of debris.
•Take photos of your belongings (needed for insurance if house burns) – tv, computer, appliances, tools, furniture, etc.
•Think about what you want to take with you if evacuated:
  • Medication
  • Documents such as passports, insurance info, important files, passwords, etc.
  • Wedding photos or other important photos
  • Spare clothes and other essentials.

  1. CSU's Little Shop of Physics -  Curious about how magnets work? Wonder why the sky is blue? Looking for some cool science experiments you can try with materials you already have at home? Every Friday at 11am MST the Little Shop of Physics brings you a new episode of LSOP Live. Tune in live on Zoom to ask questions or you can view it later on our website.   2. Home Workout tips from CSU's College of Health and Human Sciences - In their monthly blog, how to create a "new normal" with at home workouts to stay active in the fall and winter months with a home workout routine.
  3. Recipe: Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center Recipe of the Month- Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese: Ring in fall with this seasonal recipe. This dish offers a nutritional twist on a classic comfort food.
  4. Information about Wolves in Colorado - If you missed the "People and Predator series" there is a new informational packet about Colorado Wolves. The Center for Collaborative Conservation/Center for Human Carnivore Coexistence/Extension partnership has compiled the attached package of information on wolves.
  5. Rocky Mountain PBS - Watch 'The Great Experiment: CSU at 150' - Stream a full-length documentary about the history of Colorado's land-grant university, produced to celebrate the university's 150th birthday
  6. October Gardening Tips from USU Extension - Get some seasonal tips from our friends at Utah State that are relevant to our gardens too 1. Learn how and when to harvest winter squash. Store winter squash in a cool, 50-55 F, dry location. 2. Plant garlic cloves from mid-October through early November. 3. Remove vegetable plants from the garden once the harvest is complete. This will reduce overwintering sites for pests. Explore more October gardening tips.
  7. Framework for Family Conversations - Resources for helping children cope with disasters and stressful topics like COVID-19.
  8. Learn to play the guitar with Fender - As the days are getting shorter, wouldn't it be nice to strum some tunes next to the fireplace? Fender is offering a free three-month subscription to Fender Play, its online guitar learning app, through the end of the year.

Learn about and taste beers from Tommyknockers, Guanella Pass, and Cabin Creek breweries and celebrate our 2020 hops harvest - in a live Zoom event at 7 pm on Thursday 10/29/2020!
