A Meadow Memory
"Strong Winds"

By Beckie Thompson

In August, John and I were able to go on a much needed vacation to Maine. Before we left my Mom had shared a memory from the 1950s, of driving through the beautiful hills of Vermont on the way to Maine and singing  “How Great Thou Art.” She told me that at that time it was a brand new song! One day we took an invigorating hike in Baxter State Park, with magnificent views at the summit. The words of the second verse of
“How Great Thou Art” came to mind.

“When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze

Chorus:

Then sings my soul my Savior God to thee
How Great thou Art, How Great thou Art.”

As John and I walked through the forest, there was indeed a gentle breeze, but when we reached the summit, the winds were VERY strong.

Are there strong winds in your life right now?
Winds that cause your footing to be shaky and your mind to stray from calm?

Let us all remember, there is another wind! Jesus said the Holy Spirit is like the wind. And Jesus authors and commands the wind. So we can trust the Wind of His Spirit to calm the wind and waves that threaten us.

Here at Green Meadow Farm, we see so many weary parents come and find rest from the strong winds of life in the “Pasture Peace” and the “Storm Shelter.” At the same time their children are being renewed and refreshed in areas of struggle, as they work alongside our amazing team of instructors and their equine and animal friends.

As you face strong winds in life, together with us, be still and ponder the words of an old hymn:

“Be still my soul the waves and wind still know,

His voice that ruled them while he dwelt below.”

And he (Jesus) said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

Matthew 8:26
