Get Sustainable

October is Campus Sustainability Month, and there are a lot of ways to get involved. This month represents how collaborative and interconnected campus sustainability is across our campus and larger community. Representatives of sustainability-related organizations have formed the Student Council on Sustainability and collaborated on a week-long celebration of campus sustainability Oct. 26-30. All are welcome to participate.

Nominate students for the International Student Achievement Award
The International Student Achievement Award is awarded each fall and spring semester to two international students (one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level) who have demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and shown a commitment to campus and/or community engagement. Faculty, staff, fellow students, and members of the Columbia community can nominate an outstanding graduating international student. The students will be recognized at the virtual reception during International Education Week.

Student Life is hiring

"Tell us about yourself" survey results
The 2020 Pre-Orientation Intake Survey, “Tell us about yourself”, was launched in Summer 2020 by the Office of New Student Orientation. Students completed this survey, prior to attending orientation and during their registration process. Although this was created before the pandemic, responses were gathered through May when virtual orientation was launched. Survey questions ranged from behavior in high school/previous institutions to expected behaviors in college. It asked students to share their concerns, areas of confidence, expectations and amount of time estimated they will spend on specific activities. See the survey results on the Orientation website

What's Dennis Reading?

Six problem-solving mindsets for very uncertain times
"Great problem solvers are made, not born. That’s what we’ve found after decades of problem solving with leaders across business, nonprofit, and policy sectors. These leaders learn to adopt a particularly open and curious mindset, and adhere to a systematic process for cracking even the most inscrutable problems. They’re terrific problem solvers under any conditions. And when conditions of uncertainty are at their peak, they’re at their brilliant best." -McKinsey & Company
Staff Notes
  • Cody Dunlap of University Housing was recently elected to serve as President of the South Carolina Housing Officers Association (SCHOA).
Campus Conversation

"Regarding UofSC and the Nov. 3 election specifically, I emailed with President Caslen and Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Sandra Kelly because I was concerned about asynchronous classes on Election Day being a barrier to voting and I got a phenomenal response from them."
