Our club invests in dreams by funding scholarships and teacher grants. Our club, with others, has distributed more than $2.6 million in education grants to nearly 1,700 women worldwide through the Soroptimist International Live Your Dream Award each year. The above photo shows Ashely who won the Live Your Dream Award last year. The club also awards scholarships to a Del Oro student and provided grants to k-8 teachers. Refer people to our awards page on the website and encourage them to apply before the November 15 deadline.
And Congratulations to SILB!
At the September 26 SNR (Sierra Nevada Region) Zoom meeting, our Club received the Blanche Edgar Award for S.O.L.T. (Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training). This award recognizes clubs that show innovation in educating their members. Thank you to Rae for her creative crossword puzzle idea!!
Huge Pumpkins are a Hit
Over 60 club members, their co-workers and guests are signed up to make beautiful pumpkins with succulents growing in them at the October 21 program meeting. Some groups will work remotely with supplies and instructions provided by the club and others will work outside at the Train Depot Park. President-elect Rae is organizing this popular event.
Children’s Books Needed
Do you have children’s books to share with the community? Young families are using the Soroptimist Little Free Library located at the Train Depot and children’s books are in demand. If you have children’s as well as other books in good condition, contact Karin to donate them. People using the Little Free Library are encouraged to “take one, leave one.” Learn more at Loomis Soroptimist Opens Little Free Library.
Keeping in Contact with Girls at Koinonia
Our club has worked with Koinonia Group Homes in Loomis for many years. Because of COVID-19, we haven’t seen the girls in person since the yoga offered in the park this summer. So club members wrote inspirational messages in cards for the girls before the club business meeting on October 7. We have delivered the Soroptimist Dream It, Be It career development program for the girls, usually in the spring. In addition, club member Mechelle has offered yoga as well as taught a self-esteem building class in the fall, funded by the club.
We Love Our Firefighters!
We appreciate Sheila painting a picture and presenting it to the Loomis Fire Department in appreciation of all that they do for our community.
Our club is selling 36 cases of award winning Ternero olive oil made in Placer County. The bottles are specially labeled for the club with a graphic created by Toni. Be sure to pick up your Olive Oil from Chris. The club is projected to make $3840 from this new fundraiser. Read more about the Olive Oil atOlive Oil Fundraiser.
White Elephant Raises Funds & Laughter
Our club traditionally hosts a White Elephant on months that have five Wednesdays. Members bring fun gifts to auction off. On Wednesday, September 30, our new member Bev kindly hosted the event. The talking Santa that spoke up whenever someone walked by the wrapped package and the Jimmy Buffet book with grass skirt had the whole group laughing. We raised over $100 for the delegate fund that pays for Soroptimist education event.
