Thomas Whitman, Composer At Work

Tom Whitman's new commission will be a Philadelphia market-based suite of short movements scored for winds and percussion. His new piece will be performed multiple times in 2021 at local farmers markets, Reading Terminal, 9th Street Market, Cherry Street Pier, Chinatown, and other locations.

Stay tuned to learn about Tom's visits to our Cherry Street Pier "Composer At Work" window and at the concert sites. In addition to describing his inspirations for the music, he will demostrate interesting composer's tools such as musical cryptograms – spelling the word "PHILADELPHIA" with musical pitches, the use of musical quotes reflective of different local markets, and a rhythmic figure based on the words in the phrase below:

Music Along SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line
Stay tuned – Orchestra 2001's new Presser Special Projects series of small, pop-up concerts will feature our musicians and Philadelphia composers in socially distanced, small concert events along the 40-minutes of SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line ("L") that runs through dozens of different Philadelphia neighborhoods.

STEP UP TO THE PLATE
is a collaborative effort of Broad Street Ministry, Project Home, and Prevention Point Philadelphia, working closely with the City of Philadelphia to help assist some of the most vulnerable communities in Philadelphia.

As part of EMERGING MARKETS, Orchestra 2001 continues to present weekly musical events, as weather permits, featuring solo musicians and small ensembles for 500-600 lunchtime visitors at Step Up To The Plate’s Kensington location at Clearfield and Ruth Streets, Philadelphia 19134.
