What's Happening This Week
Mastery Learning Day: Friday
The Grauer School operates under a Core Value of Perseverance. We recognize that not every student is equally gifted, but all are encouraged to maximize their talents. Determination is fostered in every young learner, and our Mastery Learning program assures that each student will grasp key concepts before moving to new topics.

Understanding Mastery Learning is one of the most challenging topics for our students and parents, especially our new parents, as Mastery Learning does not look the same for every student and in every class. Every student has different academic goals—our job is to help our students better understand themselves, to refine their goals, and to help them achieve these goals. School wide, we allow students to upgrade all of their formative assignments (homework, quizzes, rough drafts, chapter tests, and labs); however, we do not allow them to upgrade all of their summative assignments (unit tests, final drafts, presentations, and Core Value Portfolios). In general, our middle school students will be allowed to upgrade the majority of their assignments; however, as students advance through our program, we weight their summative assignments more heavily to ensure that they are mastering the material and preparing themselves ahead of time. Students may change their mastery learning levels in a given class at any time. On occasion, we even remove mastery learning privileges for students who might be abusing our system.

At The Grauer School, we believe that motivation to succeed should come from within. So our instructional aim is to create a positive, enriching, and Socratic academic environment where students’ efforts and attitudes help them shape and achieve their personal goals. That said, we offer unparalleled support to help our students achieve their goals. All of our teachers offer Office Hours to provide additional one-on-one help to students; we also have an optional Friday Box program, monitored Study Halls, and an extensive proprietary Gradescape database to help monitor student progress. We also have additional fee-based programs to help students achieve their academic goals such as our Educational Mentoring program and our afterschool 3-5 Homework Help program.

Please note that this Friday, October 23 is our first Mastery Learning Day of this academic year. On Mastery Learning Days, students must stay at school until all owed work and upgrades have been submitted—or 4:00pm. High School students that do not owe any work in any class may get signatures from all teachers and be released from school on Friday, October 23; Middle School students that do not owe any owed work or upgrades may be released at noon.

If you would like more explanation of our Mastery Learning program and how this might work best for your child, please feel free to contact Dana at dana@grauerschool.com. We sincerely enjoy talking with you to develop the best individualized program for your child so that they can achieve their goals.

Spirit Week: Monday, October 26-Thursday, October 29
The High School ASB will be presenting our annual Spirit Week next week. Each grade will receive points based on participation for the day's theme using a simple algorithm designed to balance each grade and to factor out the number of members it might have. Additional points will be awarded based on the victor(s) of the lunch activity. Please watch for the fliers on campus and our Grauer ASB Instagram account for daily themes and activities.

9th Grade Matriculation Ceremony: Tuesday
The 9th Grade Matriculation Ceremony will be held next Tuesday, October 27 at 12:30pm in a socially-distanced format on the field. The ceremony will be livestreamed via Youtube Live. We will be sending access information to 9th Grade parents prior to the ceremony, so you will be able to watch from home and see your children officially inducted into our High School program.

Student Mock Election: October 27
The Grauer School will be conducting a Mock Election for students on October 27 (one week ahead of the real election on November 3). The Senior Class has prepared a "Mock Election Ballot Guide" website to help students learn more about the 12 propositions on the ballot and the presidential candidates. Students should familiarize themselves with the candidates and propositions ahead of the mock election by using this website and the Mock Election Guide created by the State of California. Seniors will also be visiting middle school home rooms to answer student questions. For more information about the Mock Election, contact Jessi Brown.

Student-Led Parent Conferences: October 29-30
For thirty years, The Grauer School has asked our students to participate in Student-Led Parent Conferences. We value these conferences as they help our students, parents, and teachers collaborate to develop the best academic program for each student. Additionally, these conferences advance our core values of self-advocacy and accountability. Each conference is approximately 8-minutes in length, will be hosted via Zoom, and asks students to present their work so far this year and to identify strengths and growth areas for them in each subject. We request that each student and family do their best to attend these virtual conferences as we find it important for each student to reflect upon their work this semester, to articulate their progress, to identify their growth areas, and to set goals for the second quarter. We know that 8-minutes is not a lot of time, but also recognize that you’re trying to schedule conferences with 7 different teachers and our faculty is trying to accommodate 160 students. You are welcome to schedule follow-up meetings at a later date if you would like more time.

Conference sign-ups will remain open until Wednesday, October 28 at 4:00pm. Slots are still available on Thursday, October 29 from 3:30-6:00pm and on Friday, October 30 from 9:00am-4:00pm. Your family should have received an e-blast on Tuesday, October 13, from our Communications Team with detailed sign-up and conference instructions. Please note that you do not need to schedule conferences with Homeroom and/or Study Hall teachers or with assistant teachers unless there is an issue you wish to discuss. We also recognize that most of our seniors have completed 4-5 rounds of Student-Led Parent Conferences; therefore, if your senior feels that he/she would be better served using the day to work on college applications, we will excuse them from conferences pending they are earning passing grades in their classes.

Although many other schools now utilize the Student-Led Parent Conference model, we believe that thirty years ago, we may have just been among the first schools to institute this program. Our talented faculty will be working with our students over the next two weeks to help them reflect upon their progress and prepare for these conferences—they’re designed to be a celebration of work and academic growth. If you have any challenges signing up for conferences through our online "Meet the Teacher" Course Scheduler, please contact Peggy Gardner at peggygardner@grauerschool.com. And, if you have questions about our conferences in general, please feel free to contact Dana Abplanalp-Diggs at dana@grauerschool.com. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom for these conferences soon!

Our Reputation Matters: Please Leave a Review!
What our parents and students say about Grauer ensures our reputation and drives new families to look at the amazing education we offer. The Niche school ranking service has informed us that "The Grauer School is once again a top school in the San Diego area, climbing from #8 last year to #7 this year."  If you haven't already done so, please weigh in with your perspective to help Grauer continue climbing our way to the top ranking - click here to leave a review about The Grauer School on niche.com describing what makes our school and your student's experience so unique. Learning From Home: Quarter 2 Guidelines

We appreciate the effort all of our students have invested over the first quarter. It’s hard to believe that in the past nine weeks we have started the year virtually, have returned to campus, have hosted a highly successful expeditions/intensives week, and have spent the past three weeks teaching in-person and at-home learners concurrently. We appreciate your patience as we learn to navigate this new normal “by discovery”—we’re learning more every day about how to make this a great experience for all students.
As we start the second quarter, we would like to clarify some of our expectations surrounding at-home learning. Although we are grateful to have the technology to offer this option and stream classes to students who have underlying medical issues, who are unable to be on campus due to extenuating circumstances, and/or who are exhibiting COVID symptoms or exposures, we are realizing that there may be some miscommunication surrounding our at-home learning expectations that we are hoping to clarify as we enter the second quarter.

1.  At-home learning is for students with extenuating circumstances that have been approved by our administration. We appreciate it when students who display COVID symptoms or who may have been exposed select this option; however, it was not designed for students to join at will such as in the case of oversleeping, inability to get a ride to school, or the student feels like staying home on a given day.

2.  We are grateful to be able to offer temporary at-home learning for students who have been exposed to COVID-19, who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19, and/or who may have been exposed to a larger number of people via a gathering or travel experience. In this case, we do request that students and families still contact our attendance line and that students contact their teachers as soon as possible to let them know that they will be accessing their classes via Zoom for a temporary time period (so we can plan to turn on our Owl Meeting Pro technology).

3. In the case of inclement weather or a COVID outbreak on campus, we may need to quickly pivot to at-home learning for our entire school community or an entire grade-level. Although we hope that this does not happen, we appreciate your watching your e-mail and reading school communications. In the case of a last-minute format switch, we will share information through our One Call Now Emergency Notification System.

Please know that our teachers are investing countless hours reimagining their lesson plans to concurrently teach in-person and at-home learners—while also keeping students masked, socially distanced, and outside where possible. Our students mean the world to us and we’re happy to do it—it would just be extremely helpful if we knew how many students to plan for IN ADVANCE both on-campus and at-home on a given day.

Thank you and we sincerely appreciate your help in keeping our school community safe.
Deans' View

Listen

Silence is difficult. We’ve all been in a position where we have attempted to alleviate our discomfort by filling the void with something, anything in a conversation. A recent guest of the World Religion class reminded us that there is no “I” when you truly listen with empathy. If you want to hear what the other person is saying, you cannot project your experiences and your perspectives onto their story. Like smoky glass, who we are diffuses the reality of others when we work to remake it into our own. This means remaining silent at often challenging times, waiting patiently rather than rushing ahead.
With Student-led Parent Conferences one week away, listening is foremost on all of our minds. As teachers, we always have a lot to say. As a parent, I know that I too have a lot to say. However, going to The Grauer School is not our experience, our reality. It’s that of the students. Central to student-first, relationship-driven education is giving space for student voices to tell their story.

It is not easy. Students will stumble through awkward silences and the embarrassingly muddled turn of phrase, but we must be patient and kind. To listen without ego takes just as much courage as the self-advocacy we are hoping for our students to exhibit. The empathy we have for them will be the bedrock of their perseverance moving forward.

If you would have any questions, please know that any of the three Deans are here to help.

High School Coed Outdoor Grass Volleyball Clinics
Trevor Olson is offering Outdoor Coed Grass Volleyball Clinics for all interested High School Boys and Girls after school from 3:30-5:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Once we are actively engaging outdoors and appropriately distanced, students that wish to remove their masks may do so. Those that wish to keep them on are strongly encouraged to do so. These clinics are 100% voluntary and are not required from anyone, so please don't feel any pressure to sign-up. There will be many more opportunities like this one as the year progresses. Students, if you are interested in participating, come out on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons and let's have some fun!
Green Grauer: Our Garden Is Growing
From Jamie Burnett, Green Grauer Gardening Leader:

Is it possible our weather turned a corner and we are now headed into fall?  This week, we made some quick and simple repairs on the irrigation in the row crop area.  With the change of season, this is a good time to check irrigation for leaks and adjust the timer to reflect the cooler weather.

We have more carrot seedlings!  Would you like some for your home garden?  We have started lettuce seeds and will begin to add these into our beds in a few weeks time.  Michelangelary the turtle and Neptune the tortoise are very excited about our lettuce seedlings!
This Thursday, October 22, at 11:00am we will be exploring dolmas with Grauer Math teacher, Fariba Farah and Chef Serenity Wood.   If you fermented grape leaves a few weeks ago, you are welcome to prepare a small batch of dolmas at home to share with the group. Chef Serenity Wood recommended to lightly blanch or experiment with lightly oiling and baking for a crispy texture, if your grape leaves are not tender enough.

Here is a Persian recipe that Fariba shared with us, and she said this recipe is very close to what her grandmother used to make: https://persianmama.com/dolmeh-barg-stuffed-grape-leaves/. At 11:00am on Thursday, Fariba will be joining us as she shares her family traditions making dolmas.  We can practice stuffing and rolling grape leaves together as she shares her dolma wisdom with us. We will meet in the garden at 10:00am, and then make our way to the outdoor area directly in front of the kitchen. Thank you kindly for continuing to wear a mask and taking good care of yourself and those around you.
Welcome to New Grauer Garden Team Leader
Introducing, Kelle Rock! Recruited by Sally Grauer to add more depth to our growing gardening program, Kelle Rock has a green thumb and a heart of gold. Kelle is an environmental steward with a fascination for sustainability. Born in New Orleans, she now lives near the school and brings her wisdom in growing, animals, cooking, and adventure to our garden group. We hope you'll come and meet Kelle at an upcoming Grauer Garden event!
The photos below are from last week's Turtle Topiary event, where our Garden Group created adorable turtle topiaries using upside-down planters stuffed with moss and succulents.
Events & Activities at The Grauer School
Physical Science Class - Measurement Lab

From Patricia Young, Physical Science Teacher:

8th grade Physical Science students are currently learning about physical and chemical properties and their use in comparing substances. In a Measurement Lab last week, students developed their skills using graduated cylinders and triple beam balances, as they explored the density, viscosity, solubility, and flammability of some common household substances. (Without a doubt, the flammability station was their favorite.)
7th Grade Life Science - Cell Mysteries

From Nick Scacco, 7th Grade Life Science Teacher:

7th Grade students were presented with slides from an imaginary accident scene last week. They were tasked with recording observations and using microscopes to try to determine if the slide contained an animal or plant cell, in order to solve the cell mystery. The focus of this lesson was on noticing overall cell shape, organization, and organelles, as part of their ongoing studies to learn about cells. The students also learned how to use the different powers on the microscopes, as well as the right way to safely carry a microscope.
Grauer Weekly Virtual Assemblies

The Grauer School's weekly assemblies on Tuesdays are a special part of our community, and we don't want to miss that feeling of togetherness that we all get as we gather all the students and staff together each week. Since we can't gather in large groups, we host virtual assemblies in CVP (Core Value Portfolio) Groups through Zoom video conferences every Tuesday at 12:30pm. Assemblies begin with a message from Dr. Stuart Grauer, followed by each teacher reading out the weekly announcements to their CVP group. Gratitude is another important attribute of our Grauer community, and Grauer Counselor Shelley Boniwell collects notes of gratitude from students and teachers so she can share them at each weekly Assembly.

Assembly Video Messages for Tuesday, October 20
You can click on the image of Dr. Grauer below to view his Assembly video message for this week. He asked students to think about their current happiness level, as well as what happiness level they deserve and are capable of achieving.

Teacher Spotlight
Grauer Teacher In The News

Congratulations to Jillian Bourdon, English and Psychology Teacher, for being featured on the cover and in an article in this month’s San Diego Reader magazine! The article “San Diego Models of Happiness” was written by former Grauer teacher Chris Ahrens, and it includes Jillian and other San Diegans explaining their secrets to being happy in their lives. Click here to read the article.
Jillian says, “Having an idea of what you think happiness is can actually get in the way of happiness. Happiness is what happens, and I think there’s a relationship between the words happiness and happen. I think happiness is what’s left when you strip away all expectations. That’s not always the case, but I think it creates conditions that can lead to happiness. Other conditions leading to happiness for me are good relationships, doing things for friends, having a nice work/life balance where there’s ample extra time, and having hobbies.”
