Last Weekend for The Parks’ FRESHFARM Market

This Sunday is the last farmers market this season at The Parks! The FRESHFARM Market has run every Sunday morning in September and October with some of the region's most popular small businesses and producers. Bring a picnic blanket and pick up warm empanadas from DMV Empanadas, fresh pizza from Timber Pizza, local beer from Right Proper, cider from Capital Cider House, and produce from Pleitez Produce. Full vendor list here.

Enter at the Georgia Avenue/Butternut Street NW gate, and the market is in the grassy area immediately inside the gate. Limited parking is available on site since Main Drive is under construction, so please consider walking or biking. Details here.

Join Our Virtual Open House Nov. 4 or 12
Join the development team at The Parks at Walter Reed for two virtual open houses and tours of The Brooks condominiums (available early next year!) with an update on the entire development. These virtual events will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 7 pm, and Thursday, Nov. 12, 7 pm.

The content will be identical, so please mark your calendar for the date that works best for you. The hour-long presentation will include updates on the playground and dog park on the way (construction starting later this year); the Arts Plaza; the new apartments and condos under construction; and the retail Marketplace anchored by the Whole Foods Market (opening in late 2022). The open house event is free and open to all. The team will take questions at the end of the presentation. Check our website for the RSVP link coming soon.

Abrams Hall: Fully Leased & Now with Solar Panels
The 80 affordable senior apartments in Abrams Hall are now fully leased, and the residents are enjoying views of the Great Lawn as the autumn colors change. This property is age-restricted to 62 years of age or older for affordable one-bedroom apartments, and the first residents moved in last December.

In September, more than 405 kilowatts of solar panels were installed on the new roof of Abrams Hall, making it one of the largest installations on a private building in the District.

Farmers Market Food Drop-Off at Abrams Hall
Through a partnership with FRESHFARM and local producers, The Parks is providing free produce bags to 144 residents of Abrams Hall — everyone who was interested — for five weeks this fall. Each week, FRESHFARM coordinates bagging and drop-off of fresh produce, and the property managers distribute the food to residents. Last week’s bags included apples, greens and squash. Shown: Ms. Toni McCray receiving produce from property manager Sheron Phillip.

ULI Washington Tours The Parks
In October, ULI Washington and The Parks at Walter Reed development team presented a panel discussion and real estate-focused virtual tour on the work currently underway to transform this former Army medical campus into the next thriving urban submarket. Missed the presentation? You can watch it on Vimeo here. If you want to see what the campus looks like right now, check out this short video by the ULI Young Leaders.

Barre3 Series Continues THIS Friday
Join Barre3 14th Street for a 30-minute class during your lunch break on Friday — the perfect way to start the weekend right.

Details: Friday, October 23, 2020
Time: 12 noon - 12:30 pm
Where: Instagram Live

Alicia Sokol, owner of the studio, will lead a cardio-based class designed to get your muscles warm and your heart thumping hard. You’ll work through a collection of dynamic, large-range movements to challenge the heart and lungs, get sweaty, and release tension. Most importantly, Alicia wants you to find joy in moving your body as it is right now. All moves are low-impact and adaptable to account for tender knees, hips, and tight low backs.

Visit the website and follow us @TheParksDC for 5-minute meditation sessions that will be released soon.

Down in the Reeds Presents
This November, join the team behind the Down in the Reeds music festival for two unique experiences with local artists that underscore the ability of music to heal, especially during these stressful times.

1. Songs for the Times: On November 7 on Instagram Live, join B.E. Farrow & Friends to reimagine three classic songs that reflect this tumultuous era, including tunes by Bob Dylan and Bill Withers.
2. Eclectic Sound Bath: On November 15, several artists will create a soothing sound bath performance using bowls, strings, and percussion.

Videos will be posted on our YouTube channel and highlighted on Instagram Live and Facebook

Hard Hat Tours Underway at The Brooks
Hard hat tours are happening now at The Brooks! Prospective buyers now have the chance to get up close and imagine life in their new home. This allows prospects to see the views, get a feel for the space, and ultimately choose which residence works best for them. Tours are limited, so reach out to the sales team and schedule your private appointment. Also, stay tuned for news on our new models coming soon. More at thebrooks@urbanpace.com

Playground & Dog Park Construction
A new playground and dog park are coming soon. Construction will start later this year on a dog park and a large playground near the Main Drive entrance, nestled between historic trees immediately to the north of the Main Drive/Georgia Avenue gate. Both should be open in spring 2020.

Makeover at the Gate
Main Drive, the meandering thoroughfare that runs from Georgia Avenue to 16th Street NW, is still under construction immediately inside the Georgia Avenue gate. The guard house and old bus stop have been demolished. The construction will create a more beautiful and accessible entrance for pedestrians and vehicles, with on-street parking, widened sidewalks, lighting, and a multi-use path.

The Hartley + Whole Foods
Site preparation continues at The Hartley, the 323-apartment residential building anchored by the Whole Foods Market grocery store. The building will also include an additional 60,000 SF of retail. A tower crane will be installed in the next month as renovation of the existing garage continues. This building is on track to be finished in 2022.

Arts Park Update
The development team is restoring the areas surrounding the Arts Park buildings and plaza, including the auto shop and the firehouse. Exterior improvements and landscaping will be completed early next year.

Thank You for Supporting Housing Up
Living in the City 2020 celebrated Housing Up's thirty years of work helping to end family homelessness in DC. This year’s virtual benefit on October 5 raised more than $90,000 to help more than 700 families navigate COVID-19 and maintain their safe and affordable housing! Watch videos from the event and learn how you can get involved.

S.O.M.E. Reclaims Equipment
So Others Might Eat (SOME) is developing Karin House in Building 17, a new facility on the campus of The Parks at Walter Reed. This fall, SOME reclaimed some useful snow removal equipment, tools, and materials that had been left by the Army in unused buildings on campus.
