PLAY THING NEWS | October 2020

The Canadian Play Thing has been on hiatus from regular readings for a couple of months, but there's been lots going on behind the scenes!
  •  In September Canadian Play Thing Society was officially incorporated in BC as a Not-for-Profit Society.
  •  In a partnership with Intrepid Theatre in Victoria, the Play Thing now has a paid employee through UVIc Co-op and Career: Project Manager Justin Lee. The position is funded through the Magnet Student Work Placement Program. Read all about it here.
  • As you may remember, Justin headed up the virtual writer's room known as The Apartment of Writing over the summer and early fall - where four emerging dramatists collaboratively created a four episode pod-play script, A Way Out. The script is slated for production in November, and will be available for your listening pleasure. Stay tuned!
  • During the hiatus, the Play Thing has loaned its 100-seat webinar-based venue to events such as fundraisers, international anti-racism seminars, and recently a reading of this year's winning play in the Risk Theatre Modern Tragedy Competition (details below). If you need a virtual live venue with off-screen audience for your non-commercial event (and experienced guidance to help you set it up, contact us!

ABOUT THE PLAY:
A trio of petty thieves hide out in a motel room after stealing a piece of art from a museum in a smash-and-grab job. The painting offers a different possibility for each of them, but as its true value and significance become clear, they must confront the reality of their own intrinsic worth in a society driven by money and power. The characters in The Value seize an opportunity that they believe is low risk and high reward until the true stakes of their gamble are revealed … Perhaps the greatest risk was trusting the other …
